1 Essential Question Lesson Plan (based on the Template) Title Causes of World War II (World History) Grade: Grade 10 Overview Describe the project students will complete. How will technology be used? This mini unit is very important for both the teacher and the students because it aims to integrate technology as much as possible. Guided by the essential question and subsidiary questions, the teacher will facilitate the students to come up with meaningful productions, a combination of words and notions, use of technology and collaboration. The class will conduct a project on the causes of World War II with the help of technology. This project is interesting for student s teachers and parents. World War II was the war that killed millions of people and destroyed innumerable amount of properties. It had such an effect in the world that the world was changed. In the beginning the teacher will be giving out handouts on important causes of World War II. This hand out is just for a little warm up that will initiate them to find more information in the internet and others sources including the primary sources. Apart from completing a work sheet at the end of this multiple day lesson, students will do a project on the causes of World War II. Students will be guided and encouraged to go beyond the causes of war collecting data and primary sources like maps, pictures and documents. The main assignment will be a research based descriptive essay supported by a scrap book with pictures and artifacts. They will be given a choice of making a poster or prepare a power point presentation for full credit credit. The teacher will give basic step by step instructions on technology use. The teacher will give lessons on use of WORD, INTERNET and POWER POINT PREENTATION. The teacher will model the power point presentation on The Causes of World War II Essential Question Why was World war II inevitable? ( This essential question will arouse curiosity and direct towards the causes of WW II)
2 Subsidiary Questions 1.Why did Germany and Italy need colonies? 2 How did Hitler rise to power? 3. Why was Japan not happy with outcome of World War I? 4. What was the Nazi-Soviet Pact and why was it important? 5. Why did United States join the war later? 6. What was the Munich Conference and why is it seen today in such a negative light? 7. What kind of Government did Germany, Italy, Japan, and Soviet union have? How were they similar? CA Content Standard for Grade 10 CA Content Standard: World History, Culture, and Geography Students analyze the causes and consequences of World War II Performance Standard: Identify and locate the Allied and Axis powers on a map and discuss the major turning points of the war, the principal theaters of conflict, key strategic decisions, and the resulting war conferences and political resolutions, with emphasis on the importance of geographic factors.
3 Technology Standard Specific ISTE Tech Standards for Teachers: Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments Model Digital-Age Work and Learning b) collaborate with students, peers, parents, and community members using digital tools and resources to support student success and innovation Specific ISTE Tech Standards for Students: Creativity and Innovation Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and processes using technology. Students: a. apply existing knowledge to generate new ideas, products, or processes. b. create original works as a means of personal or group expression. c. create original works as a means of personal or group expression. d. use models and simulations to explore complex systems and issues. Communication and Collaboration Students use digital media and environments to communicate and work collaboratively, including at a distance, to support individual learning and contribute to the learning of others. Students: a. interact, collaborate, and publish with peers, experts, or others employing a variety of digital environments and media. b. communicate information and ideas effectively to multiple audiences using a variety of media and formats. The above content standards and technology standards will be taken into consideration during the lessons.
4 Assessment The above subsidiary questions will be expected to be answered during the teaching learning process. 1. They will have to complete a descriptive essay at the end of the mini unit. 2. The students will have to complete a project on the causes of World War II by creating a poster or power point presentation. Project-Based Activities/Tasks Procedures (The project will include a research essay on the Causes of World War II, A scrapbook of maps, primary sources, and pictures of important personalities during the War. The scrap book may be about the WW II in general or specific with maps, events or personalities.) What will students and teacher do? Be specific and provide a step-by-step process for student tasks and activities. A) Day 1: The teacher starts the class by asking question, Has any one seen a movie on World War II? What was one thing you liked about the movie, what was one thing you did not like? The teacher writes down the points on a T chart. After most of them have participated, the teacher shows a video clip on World War II. The students are given a Video facts work sheets to write down 5 or more facts on the video clip. At the end of this lesson, all students write pros and cons of World War II. B) Day 2: The class will be divided in 4 groups. Each group will be given the same project with a compulsory essay on the causes of World War II. The teacher models the APA format for the essay. The teacher will also explain that this is a multiple day assignment accompanied by a poster or a Power Point Presentation. The teacher gives instruction on the use of internet. The following step by step instruction will be helpful for the students. Internet uses 1. Click the internet provider icon e.g. Mozilla Firefox, internet explorer etc 2. You will see your home page or any default page 3. If you already have particular address, you may type it in the web browser space on the top of the page. 4. You may go back or forward by clicking the back or forward buttons symbolized by arrows to showing left or right direction. 5. You will see various tabs in the home page of any web sites. You may click the tabs you are interested at e.g. If you want to contact the
5 company, click contact us tab. 6. To conduct internet research, the best is to go to 7. You will see a search engine in the home page. Just type the words or phrases you are interested at. At this instance, you are looking for information and images or videos about World War II. Narrow your search by typing the right words, for example, you are looking for the causes of this war, so type causes of World War II 8. You will get many websites listed. Just skim through quickly and choose the one that has the materials you want. 9. You may write notes on your journals, type it or cut and paste it in the word documents and high light the main points. 10. You are not allowed to use the materials prepared by others. It is against the law. You may use the information available in your own words and cite the websites you have used. If you want to use some images or videos, be aware about the copyright law. If you are allowed to use those materials, you must give credit to the providers. Homework Assignment: Try to search the following web sites and draw at least 10 interesting facts from your research world_war_ii_1941_1942_demo.php Day 3 :The teacher explains the following procedures procdures for the project 1. Data collection on main essay using internets and other printed materials 2. Primary and secondary sources collection of artifacts like pictures, maps, documents etc 3. Students will organize data and write the main essay collectively 4. Students will organize the artifacts and display in large Poster boards. They are encouraged to use colors and patterns.
6 5. Presentation of the project. Each student should say something about their group project. 6. All the products will be displayed in the classroom for at least a couple of weeks. 7. Please refer to the rubrics for what is expected from the students The students share facts in their groups for 15 minutes. All the students include the new facts in their list of facts. The teacher then Gives the following lesson on the use of WORD. Step by Step Guide to Open File and Work 1. Turn on the computer 2. Wait till the computer opens fully 3. When you see the curser still you can start working 4. Click once to the start button located at left hand bottom (window icon) 5. You will see various programs appear, choose Microsoft Office Word You will see a blank page 7. Click the office button located at top left hand side 8. Click save as 9. Type the desired name for your documents 10. You can now start working Step by Step Guide to edit your Work 1. While typing use shift key and type the desired letter to capitalize. 2. Continue saving by clicking control C or clicking save button on the left hand top 3. If you want to capitalize a whole lot, click cap lock and all will be capitalized. Click cap lock again when you want to go back to normal 4. Click the tab button in the key board if you want to indent at the beginning of your new paragraphs.
7 5. Press enter to create space vertically and press space bar to create space horizontally. If you want to back space use back space bar in the key board. 6. To delete the unwanted letters or sentences, highlight the targeted items and press delete button. 7. If you deleted some items by mistake click undo typing located just beside save button. Click redo typing button if you want to recover the deleted items. 8. Continue to save the docs otherwise all your effort will go in vain. To make it more attractive and add formatting 1. To highlight the items with various colors, highlight it and text highlight color menu and click the chosen color. 2. To make the text different colors, highlight the desired texts and click and choose the Font colors located next to text highlight color menu. 3. To have different Fonts, go to font scroll bar and click the desired font. 4. To make change in the font size scroll the font size bar and choose the desired font size usually 8-72 font sizes are already in the menu. You can make smaller or bigger by typing desired number and press enter in the font size bar. 5. To lay out the paper differently click page layout, where you will have choices of margins, orientation, page breaks, line number water mark, page color or page border. You need to play around till you get the desired form. 6. To insert special items, click on to insert tab and make choices of tables, pictures, clip arts, shapes, smart arts charts etc. 7. To insert picture, click insert-click pictures-select the desired picture and insert. You can resize by pulling the right hand corner when two sided arrow appears. If you pull from the others sides, the picture will be deformed. Do not do it unless you want. 8. If you need to use APA format, you need to double space your work. To double space your work click the small triangle in the paragraph
8 tab just below the align tabs. Go to line spacing and click double and click ok. Your work will be double spaced. Day 4 The teacher encourages students to include Power Point presentations in their project. The teachers gives the following step by step lesson on preparation of Power point presentations. Power Point 1. Start PowerPoint 2. You can choose the wizard tool, a template, or a blank presentation. Choose Design Template and click OK. 3. The New Slide layout screen appears. You can select from a variety pre-designed layouts. Choose Title Slide Click OK. 4. Click in the Title Box. 5. You can choose different fonts by selecting Font from the Format menu or by pulling down on fonts in the Formatting Bar. You can also select the size and style. 6. Choose a font, size, color and style. Type your title. For this workshop, type Template Ready. You can also add a subtitle. PowerPoint Presentation. Inserting a picture 1. Click on New Slide in the Common Tasks window or New Slide from the Insert menu. The short cut is Ctrl+M. 2. Choose the Clip Art and Text slide. 3. Insert clip art on your slide by double clicking on the icon or selecting picture from clip art in the Insert menu. 4. The clip art is automatically inserted in the box. Click the title to change the text, font, color and size. Inserting a sound file 1. Click on New Slide in the Common Tasks window or New Slide from the Insert menu. The short cut is Ctrl+M. 2. Select the Two Column Text Slide. 3. Add a sound by selecting Movies and Sounds then Sound from
9 Gallery in the Insert menu. 4. Click on Music. 5. Right click on upbeat and select insert. Close the window. Transitions etc 1. Go to your first slide, and then select Slide Transition from the Slide Show menu. 2. Choose the effect and speed you want for the transition. Choose whether or not you want to advance each slide with the mouse or automatically. You can also have a sound effect between slides. Then, click Apply for the current slide or Apply to All for every slide. 3. Save your file often. Select Save As from the File menu. Pull down on the arrow and choose Presentation as the file type (ppt). Name the file and click on Save. 4. To save it as a slide show, select Save As from the File menu. Pull down on the arrow and choose PowerPoint Show as the file type (pps). Name the file and click on Save. 5. Select the view Show from the Slide Show Menu. Day 5 and 6: Power Point Presentation The teacher makes it clear that there are two main purposes of this power point presentation, first two give comprehensive information and second to model the power point presentation to the students. This power point presentation will be highly interactive. It is expected that the students will react at different slides seeing various facts and images and share it with their classmates. The presentation will continue for at least two days. Day 7: The students work in groups and gather data and share resources for their essay for the first half of the lesson and work individually in the second half. The teacher circulates and facilitates this activity. The students finish their essay for their homework assignment. Day 8: The students start working in groups for their group projects. They
10 all share data and images and start organizing. Day 9: Students complete their group project and practice presentation. Each student is required to be the part of the presentation. Day 10: Student presentations with posters or power points. Each group is allotted 10 minutes. The students will complete this mini unit by writing reflection especially focusing on areas 1) what went well 2) what could have been better 3) what was learned 4) Over all evaluation of the self, group, teacher and self. What technology integration strategies are used? The students will be given accesses to the computers with internet facilities. A list of probable websites will be given. After collection of data and other artifacts, students will be given a model of essay and also be given the rubric attached herewith. Please refer to the technology use instructions planned for different days of this mini unit, i.e. day 2, 3 and 4. The students will type and edit in the computer. They will be encouraged and guided to use interesting fonts, appropriate sizes and styles. They can print the pictures and maps from the internet. They will also be encouraged to prepare a power point presentation for extra credit. Samples of Student Work What student work will be generated, particularly in terms of portfolio artifacts for assessment? Please refer to the attachments Teacher Commentary Reflection What problems do you anticipate with this lesson? How will this lesson fit into your overall curriculum planning? The most likely problem in this lesson could be the overwhelming amount of information on the topic. The essential questions and the supporting questions should be repeatedly reminded so that the students will focus on those while gathering data and organizing those in their final product.
