1 The KING S Medium Term Plan Geography Year 9 Senior Programme Learning Cycle One Module The living world (ecosystems, tropical rainforests and hot deserts) Building on Prior Learning Students are beginning to cover content outlined in the new AQA A GCSE Geography specification. Throughout LC1-5 students are introduced to key themes across a range of physical and human topics. The aim of this year is to allow students to gain an overview of each topic at foundation stage, and focus on students improving their Geographical skills, and where appropriate, tackling contemporary and complex Geographical concepts by forming opinions based on evidence. Each topic will be taught in more detail in year 10&11 where exam technique will be introduced and focussed on. Overarching Subject Challenging question Why are ecosystems so important and what are the consequences of the threats facing them?
2 Lines of Enquiry Week 1: What types of ecosystems are there and what physical/human factors affect where we find them? Week 2: What are the key characteristics of tropical rainforests and how do plants and animals adapt to survive there? Week 3: What are the benefits and problems caused by extracting resources from a tropical rainforest? Is this sustainable? Week 4: What are the key characteristics of hot deserts? Week 5: What are the opportunities and challenges which face hot deserts and how can they be resolved? Week 6: Revision and Assessment Week Week 7: Gap Teaching
3 Exam Board Links: Topic Progress Statements Seven Key Ideas for this module have been created to guide students through the learning process. The specific specification content is listed in italics beneath the key ideas. 1. Ecosystems exist at a range of scales and involve the interaction between biotic and abiotic components Describe the distribution of ecosystems across the world and describe briefly the characteristics of each ecosystem type. Describing the roles of consumers, decomposers, food chains and nutrient cycling. 2. Tropical rainforests ecosystems have a range of distinctive characteristics Understand the physical characteristics of tropical rainforests. Explain how plants and animals adapt to the conditions of tropical rainforests. 3. Deforestation has economic and environmental impacts Use a case study of a tropical rainforest to illustrate the causes and impacts of deforestation 4. Tropical rainforests need to be managed to be sustainable Explain the importance of tropical rainforests to people and the environment. Explain a range of strategies used to manage a tropical rainforest sustainably. 5. Hot desert ecosystems have a range of distinctive characteristics Understand the physical characteristics of a hot desert. To understand how plants and animals adapt to the conditions of hot deserts. 6. Development of hot desert environments creates opportunities and challenges Use a case study of hot deserts to illustrate the opportunities and challenges of developing hot desert environments 7. Areas on the fringe of hot deserts are at risk of desertification Understand the causes of desertification and the strategies used to reduce the risk of desertification
4 Assessment in week 6 will be against the above objectives. GAP teaching will be informed by analysis of assessments in week 7.

Stage 1: What are ecosystems and how can they be impacted? Hypothesis: Humans are the key reason for changes to natural ecosystems LO: By the end of the lesson students will be able to explain what an ecosystem is and explain how local and global factors impact them BRONZE: Describe what an ecosystem is and how it works SILVER: Explain the role of different organisms in the development of an ecosystem GOLD: To discuss the causes of change to an ecosystem and the impacts that they have Stage 2: What are the characteristics of global ecosystems and where are they found? Hypothesis: A continent can be made up of more than one type of ecosystem LO: By the end of the lesson students will be able to describe the characteristics of a variety of global ecosystems and explain why they are found in different areas of the world BRONZE: Describe the characteristics of a range of global ecosystems SILVER: Describe the characteristics of a range of global ecosystems and describe their distribution across the globe GOLD: Explain why different global ecosystems are found in different parts of the world
6 Week 2 3 1hr lessons plus 1hr homework LOE: How does vegetation change within a tropical rainforest and how does this affect animal habitats? Stage 1 and 2: The characteristics of tropical rainforests Hypothesis: Tropical rainforests experience more rain than the UK LO: By the end of the lesson students will be able to describe and explain the key features of climate and soils found in tropical rainforests as well as explaining how plants and animals are adapted to survive in these conditions BRONZE: To describe the climate of a tropical rainforest SILVER: To explain why plants and animals have to adapt to survive in tropical rainforests and explain the adaptations of at least one plant and one animal GOLD: Explain why tropical rainforests are found in equatorial areas and suggest how this influences the plants and animals that live there
7 Stage 3: Causes of deforestation in Malaysia Hypothesis: We can live without using the rainforest LO: By the end of the lesson students will be able to give examples of resources that we use from the rainforest, and question how important it is for our everyday lives BRONZE: Explain why tropical rainforests are being cut down SILVER: Explain the importance of tropical rainforests to the survival of humans and suggest the advantages and disadvantages of using tropical rainforests in this way GOLD: Explain the impact that deforestation in having in Malaysia and draw conclusions on whether the advantages outweigh the disadvantages
8 Week 3 LOE: What are the benefits and problems caused by extracting resources from a tropical rainforest? Is this sustainable? 2 1hr lessons plus 1hr homework Stage 1: Consequences of deforestation in Malaysia Hypothesis The consequences of deforestation outweigh the benefits that we receive from using it LO: By the end of the lesson students will be able to discuss the impacts of deforestation and decide whether the benefits of deforestation outweigh the consequences BRONZE: Describe some of the negative impacts of deforestation SILVER: Explain some of the social, economic and environmental impacts of deforestation GOLD: Analyse the impacts that deforestation in Malaysia has had and suggest how this could impact the future of the country Stage 2: Managing tropical rainforests Hypothesis: Humans will struggle to survive in the future if tropical rainforests are not protected LO: By the end of the lesson students will be able to explain the importance of protecting the world s tropical rainforests BRONZE: Identify some key reasons why tropical rainforests need to be protected SILVER: Explain the importance of tropical rainforests to both humans and the environment
9 GOLD: Using evidence, suggest how current deforestation rates could impact humans and the environment in the future
10 Week 4 2 1hr lessons plus 1hr homework LOE: How can rainforests be managed sustainably? Stage 1: Sustainable management of tropical rainforests Hypothesis It is difficult to manage tropical rainforests in a sustainable way LO: By the end of the lesson students will be able to discuss the different strategies used to manage tropical rainforests BRONZE: Identify a number of different strategies that can be used to sustainably manage tropical rainforests SILVER: Explain how a number of different strategies help to manage the tropical rainforests sustainably GOLD: Analyse the success of different strategies used to sustainably manage tropical rainforests, with reference to the impact this has on people and the environment. Stage 2: Environmental characteristics of hot deserts Hypothesis: Only certain plants and animals can adapt to survive in hot deserts LO: By the end of the lesson students will be able to explain the location of the worlds hot deserts and the environmental conditions found there BRONZE: Explain the climate of hot deserts and describe where some the world s major hot deserts are found SILVER: Explain why plants and animals have to adapt to survive in hot deserts GOLD: Explain how at least one plant and one animal have adapted in order to survive in hot deserts
11 Week 5 3 1hr lessons plus 1hr homework LOE: What opportunities and challenges do hot deserts provide for development? Stage 1: Opportunities and challenges for development in hot deserts Hypothesis: There are more challenges for development in hot deserts than there are opportunities LO: By the end of the lesson students will be able to describe a number of opportunities and challenges for development in hot deserts BRONZE: Identify a number of opportunities and challenges faced by hot deserts in relation to development SILVER: Explain how the Thar Desert has both opportunities and challenges for development GOLD: Analyse the potential opportunities and challenges for development in the Thar Desert and draw conclusions on whether the potential outweighs the risk
12 Stage 2: Causes of desertification Hypothesis: Human actions are the primary reason for desertification LO: By the end of the lesson students will be able to explain what desertification is and explain why it is happening BRONZE: Identify the meaning of the key term desertification and describe where in the world it is happening SILVER: Explain the human and physical causes of desertification GOLD: Evaluate the impact that desertification has on areas such as Badia, Jordan Stage 3: Reducing desertification in hot deserts Hypothesis: It is impossible to completely stop desertification from happening LO: By the end of the lesson students will be able to describe the different management strategies that can reduce desertification in hot deserts BRONZE: Identify two ways in which desertification can be prevented SILVER: Explain how water and soil management and appropriate technology help prevent desertification GOLD: Use case studies to illustrate how desertification in deserts can be reduced
13 Week 6 2 1hr lessons plus 1hr homework Revision and Assessment Week During this week, students will be given the opportunity to revise for their end of learning cycle assessment. Pupils will be given key revision materials to aid their learning and will be given opportunities for both collaborative, teacher led and independent revision. Following their revision time, students will complete an end of learning cycle assessment. This assessment will contain a range of short and long answer GCSE style questions in order to prepare students for their GCSE examinations. Gap Analysis Reinforcement Week 7 Gap Reinforcement Gap teaching is an integral part of each learning cycle. Week 7 will be spent revisiting the topics which pupils have struggled with over the course of the learning cycle. Pupils will be able to review their learning cycle assessment to identify the gaps in their knowledge and complete a range of teacher led and independent tasks to ensure these gaps are filled before moving on to the next unit of work. Extended Learning Alongside lessons and homework time, pupils are expected to complete some additional reading in order to help them achieve the best possible grades in their GCSE examinations. Below are some websites to help guide them:
14 (This is not part of the timed schedule but is seen as additional support) Extended learning is expected in a variety of forms. During home learning, pupils may be asked to use the following sites to complete quick quizzes, research and analysis tasks, GCSE style questions and more open ended tasks. It is expected that students will develop an up-to-date awareness of current geographical issues, and if opportunities arise, on-going events or topics may be substituted in lessons or home learning tasks to ensure content is of the most relevant nature for students.
