Swaminathan Introduction Design of experiments is an essential component of research in agriculture and allied sciences. It is through the data collected from designed experiments that valid inferences are drawn. In order to make research globally competitive, it is essential that sound statistical methodologies be adopted for the collection and analysis of data. Without an adequate understanding of statistics, an investigator in any discipline of science may often be like a blind man groping in the dark closet for a black cat that is not there. Efficient design of experiments and appropriate statistical techniques for analyzing the data are very crucial to obtain a meaningful interpretation of the investigation. The subject is now well developed and with the help of computers, it can handle any kind of analysis. However, due to lack of exposure, researchers are not being able to make use of the recent and appropriate design of experiments and statistical analytical techniques. It is very vital for the researchers, particularly agricultural researchers to be acquainted with the efficient design of experiments, modern statistical techniques and use of computers. This course, therefore, aims to update the analytical skills of the agricultural researchers and to provide them with an opportunity to study and learn some of the efficient design of experiments and analytical techniques of experimental data. The course is practical oriented and more emphasis would be given on interpretation of the results. It employs a combination of lectures and exercises using advanced statistical software. Objectives To familiarize the participants with the recent advances in designing of experiments and statistical analysis of experimental data for making valid inferences from agricultural research. To acquaint the participants with the use of statistical software packages for statistical data analysis. To help in upgrading the research, teaching and training capabilities and presentation skills of the participants.
