1 NTR 315: Nutrition Through the Life Cycle Spring 2012, Unique # 53950, MWF Instructor: Lydia Steinman, MA, RD, LD Office: GEA 30C Phone: steinman@mail.utexas.edu Office hours: Mondays and Wednesdays 2-3:30 pm, or by appointment Teaching Assistant: Jeremy Schraw schrawj@utexas.edu Office: Painter Hall 6.04 Office Hours: 11:30 1:30 Tuesdays Course Objective Upon completion of this course the student will be able to apply basic nutrition knowledge to evaluate the rationale for nutritional needs throughout the life cycle. Textbook: Brown, J, Nutrition Through the Life Cycle, Wadsworth, 4th Ed. There are a couple of copies of the text on 2-hour reserve in the Life Science Library in the Main Building. Blackboard: Syllabus, lecture slides (pdf format), study objectives, announcements, course documents are available on Blackboard.. Grades (exams, assignment, extra credit) are posted under My Grades. Grades: Final grades are based on 620 total points. 600 points Exams 20 points Class assignment Grade Scale Based on 620 total points A = pts. A- = pts. B+ = pts. B = pts. B- = pts. C+ = pts. C = pts. C- = pts. D+ = pts. D = pts. D- = pts. F = pts.

2 Your final grade is determined solely by the total points earned in the course. Points may be earned as described in this syllabus. There are no gift points. if your point total is close to the next higher grade. The best way to avoid any disappointment due to barely missing a higher grade is to make sure that you complete all assignments on time and prepare well for exams. Exams There will be 3 midterm exams (50 multiple-choice questions) and one final exam (100 multiple-choice questions), each worth 200 points. Your 3 best exam scores will be used to calculate a total exam grade. The Final Exam is optional if you have taken all three midterm exams and are satisfied with your grades. The final exam will be comprehensive. No make-up exams will be given, unless you have a valid written excuse from a physician or a legitimate family emergency. Prior arrangements can be made with the Teaching Assistant to take the exam early. - In the event that you miss a midterm exam and do not have a valid excuse, you will be required to take the comprehensive final exam. - If you miss more than 1 exam, you will receive zero points for the 2 nd missed exam. Exam policies: Student IDs will be checked at each exam. You will be asked to show your ID when handing in your exam. While exams are in progress, all books, notebooks, papers, jackets, cell phones and personal effects must be placed as designated by the instructor. Nonprogrammable calculators may be used for examinations. Students may not share calculators. No cell phones are allowed. The instructor will provide Scantrons for all exams. Only examination papers, Scantron, calculator (no cell phones), and pencils may be on a student's desk while the examination is in progress. Exam questions (hard copy of the exam) must be turned in with your Scantron when you finish the exam. Exam questions will not be returned to students, but will be available for review during the instructor s and teaching assistants office hours. To maintain test security, students may not make any notes while reviewing the exams. Class Assignment Students are required to complete the following class assignment for a total of 20 points: - Food Safety during Pregnancy (video + question set) This assignment is due on the date specified by the instructor (refer to course schedule). Late policy for assignment: minus 30% per day late. No exceptions.

3 No make-ups for this assignment will be allowed unless you have a written excuse from a physician, a legitimate family emergency, or you have made prior arrangements with the instructor or teaching assistant. Extra Credit: Extra Credit Activities - Students will be able to earn up to 18 extra credit points during the semester. These points will added to your total points (620 pts.) for the semester. Diet planning during Pregnancy case study with worksheet (3 points) Overweight Child Case Study with worksheet (3 points) Article on infants / toddlers nutrition - For this activity you will write an article on infant or toddler nutrition / feeding. One well-written article from the class will be chosen for featuring on the NurturMe blog. ( (6 points) Marketing to children - For this activity you will watch 2 hours of TV programming that is of interest to children. (Examples are Saturday morning cartoons or Nickelodeon, Hannah Montana, American Idol). You will complete a worksheet describing the kinds of advertisements that you watch. (3 points) Osteoporosis Risk Reduction Case Study with worksheet (3 points) Late submittals for extra credit activities will not be accepted (Refer to class schedule for due dates). Extra credit activities will be graded for accuracy and completeness. Instructions for the extra credit activities are posted on Blackboard / Course Documents /Extra Credit folder. Communicating with instructor: If you have a question about the exam or want advice with study preparation, the instructor will be happy to answer your questions during office hours, at a scheduled appointment, or immediately before and after class, but will not answer exam content questions by . Questions and s about grading should be directed to your teaching assistant. Academic and Professional Honesty Absolute honesty must be practiced in all assignments and activities. Cheating in its various forms such as copying or sharing information on individually assigned projects or examinations, plagiarism or falsification of information or data will not be tolerated and may be grounds for dismissal from the class. Students are encouraged to become familiar with the University policy on academic honesty. Suspected violations of the policy will be reported to the Dean of Students. Academic dishonesty may result in a failing grade in the course and further disciplinary action by The University.

For more information, contact the Office of the Dean of Students at Accommodations for Religious Holidays If you miss a class, an examination, a work assignment, or a project in order to observe a religious holy day, you will be given an opportunity to complete the missed work within a reasonable time after the absence. University policy requires that you provide 14 days advanced notice of your absence. Drop / Add Deadlines: February 1 st Twelfth class day; this is the date the official enrollment count is taken. Last day an undergraduate student may add a class except for rare and extenuating circumstances. Last day to drop with possible refund April 2 nd Last day an undergraduate student may, with the dean s approval, withdraw from the University or drop a class except for urgent and substantiated, nonacademic reasons. Last day a student may change registration in a class to or from the pass/fail or credit / no credit basis.
