3 Dear Colleague, I am delighted to provide an application pack for the role of Course Leader for Health and Social Care at Joseph Chamberlain Sixth Form College. I hope you will find this information interesting and that it will help you in taking your application forward. As the only Sixth Form College to have been awarded the Queen's Anniversary Prize for Further/Higher Education, we are a popular and oversubscribed college with a national reputation for excellence. Our 40 million pound state-of-the-art building and garden opened its doors in September 2008 and we are delighted that our new campus was awarded the Prime Minister's Prize for the best public building in the UK. In our sixth academic year in the new building it still looks immaculate and staff and students are proud of our environment. We are persistent in our desire to deliver excellence for all of our students and this means that offering them outstanding learning experiences is the focus of everything we do. We want our students to be happy and successful in later life, achieving excellent examination results and enjoying a wide range of exciting opportunities that broaden their experience along the way. To this end, we place a strong emphasis on the quality of our teaching and learning. We aim to deliver inspiring lessons to our students and our teachers work collaboratively to ensure that learning is both rigorous and innovative. 5 Background Directorate for Vocational Studies The Directorate Leadership team consists of the Director of Studies 16-19, Curriculum Leader for Business and ICT, Curriculum Leader for Arts, and Curriculum Leader for Health, Foundation and Sport and Course Leaders for each subject area. Each Course Leader has line management responsibility for teachers within their subject area Learning Leaders support and lead the development of learning and across College. The Directorate offers a broad range of courses in Art and Design, Performing Arts, Business studies, IT and Computing, Media and Film, Health and Social Care, Childcare, Sport and Foundation Learning. Courses offered range from Level 1 Foundation courses and other areas offering Level 2 and 3. A large part of the provision is BTEC Qualifications though we offer a broad range of GCSE AS/ A2 Level options in most areas. Learners are offered the best facilities with well-equipped classrooms and specialist studios in a number of areas. All students are encouraged to engage in independent study and excellent resources are provided to support their learning. Central to the building is an extensive library that is open every day and for two evenings every week and computer facilities are available in an Open Learning Centre. A study centre is also available and staffed by Assistant Teachers who are there to help learners who need general study support. Each subject area provides academic enrichment, work experience additional opportunities for wider learning. Extension lessons are provided to support learners and ensure potential achievement is maximised. In Health, Foundation and Sport, a Curriculum Leader is responsible for all areas but leads on course leadership of Health and Social Care and Childcare programmes. All of this provision is Edexcel BTEC including Level 2 Diploma, Level 3 Subsidiary Certificate/ Diploma and Level 3 Extended Diplomas in Health and Social Care or Children s Play, Learning and Development. The department is equipped with excellent classrooms and that all have Smartboard facilities, and extensive resources. Moodle is used well as a virtual learning environment to support lessons and promote independent learning.
6 Terms and Conditions Contract Type Permanent Salary Salary will be on the pay structure for Sixth Form College Teachers, Management Range A, currently 36,896-39,487 per annum (including Professional Standards Payments if appropriate). Starting salary without Professional Standards Payment (PSP) will be 34,382 per annum. Hours of Work The contact hours of work are 20 hours a week but all staff are expected to work the hours necessary to complete all duties and responsibilities to a high standard. The post will involve occasional weekend and evening work. Contact hours for full time teaching staff are up to 23 per week and may include some tutorial and/or workshop time. Other time for meetings, open days, parents' evenings, staff training, etc, is as directed by the Principal. Superannuation The successful candidate will be eligible to join the Teachers' Pension Scheme and you will automatically become a member unless you opt not to join. Accountability The post is accountable to the Curriculum Leader for Health, Foundation and Sports.

After an appointment has been made, all the papers of unsuccessful candidates are kept for a period of nine months and are then destroyed.
8 Candidates with a Disability The College is a Disability Symbol User. If candidates with a disability need any special arrangements for interview, they should enclose a letter giving details of these, marked for the attention of the Personnel Manager. Police checks and Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 The successful candidate will be required to apply for a Disclosure from the Criminal Records Bureau. The College follows the Code of Practice laid down by the CRB, and this is available from the Personnel Office upon request. In accordance with the above Act employees with access to children and young people under the age of 18 are not allowed to withhold information regarding criminal convictions no matter when they occurred. Selection Process Short-listing of candidates for interview will be undertaken by the line manager and a member of the senior management team. All candidates invited to interview will be asked, on the day, to complete a practical task relevant to the nature of the post before proceeding to formal interview. Shortlisted candidates will be given the opportunity to tour the College and meet other staff.
9 Job Description Course Leader for Health Social Care To take full responsibility for the leadership of staff and courses across the area of curriculum. To have responsibility for examination liaison and administration in your area of curriculum, line management of staff and contribution to timetabling and self-assessments. To work with other leaders in the Directorate to raise student achievement and improve the learning experience for students. To motivate staff to maintain an effective workforce capable of meeting the Directorate s objectives. To work with the Director of Study to ensure high levels of quality, standards and success. To carry out lesson observations in your area of curriculum. To work with the Curriculum Leader to promote and develop high standards of learning and teaching. To work with the Curriculum Leader to ensure high standards of learner wellbeing and progress. To maintain high morale amongst staff in the area and set an example of professional standards and leadership. To chair meetings where appropriate, ensuring effective consultation, delegation of responsibility and successful implementation of outcomes. To carry out line management responsibilities as directed by the Principal and/or Deputy Principal. To actively take part in the College s Performance Management system, including appraisal of relevant staff and Staff Development and Training Programme and Safeguarding. To undertake any other duties that can be accommodated within the grading of the post.
