2 State of Connecticut Technology Competency Expectations (2001) STANDARD 1: BASIC OPERATIONS AND CONCEPTS Students demonstrate a sound understanding of the nature and operation of technology systems. Students are proficient in the use of technology. o Use input devices (e.g., mouse, keyboard, remote control) and output devices (e.g., monitor, printer) to successfully operate computers, VCRs, audio tapes, and other technologies o Use a variety of media and technology resources for directed and independent learning activities o Communicate about technology using developmentally appropriate and accurate terminology o Use developmentally appropriate multimedia resources (e.g., interactive books, educational software, elementary multimedia encyclopedias) to support learning o Discuss common uses of technology in daily life and the advantages and disadvantages those uses provide STANDARD 2: SOCIAL, ETHICAL AND HUMAN ISSUES Students understand the ethical, cultural and societal issues related to technology. Students practice responsible use of technology systems, information and software. Students develop positive attitudes toward technology uses that support lifelong learning, collaboration, personal pursuits and productivity o Practice responsible use of technology systems and software o Work cooperatively and collaboratively with peers, family members, and others when using technology in the classroom o Demonstrate positive social and ethical behaviors when using technology o Demonstrate an understanding of the appropriate and inappropriate use of technology 2

3 STANDARD 3: TECHNOLOGY PRODUCTIVITY TOOLS Students use technology tools to enhance learning, increase productivity and promote creativity Students use productivity tools to collaborate in constructing technology-enhanced models, preparing publications and producing other creative works o Use a variety of media and technology resources for directed and independent learning activities o Create developmentally appropriate multimedia products with support from teachers, family members, or student partners o Use technology resources (e.g., puzzles, logical thinking programs, writing tools, digital cameras, drawing tools) for problem solving, communication, and illustration of thoughts, ideas, and stories o Use appropriate software (writing tools, hypermedia, drawing tools, etc.) to organize and present ideas COMPETENCY STANDARD 4: TECHNOLOGY COMMUNICATIONS TOOLS Students use telecommunications to collaborate, publish and interact with peers, experts and other audiences. Students use a variety of media and formats to communicate information and ideas effectively to multiple audiences. o Use technology resources (e.g., puzzles, logical thinking programs, writing tools, digital cameras, drawing tools) for problem solving, communication, and illustration of thoughts, ideas and stories o Gather information and communicate with others using telecommunications, with support from teachers, family members or student partners 3

4 CONTENT STANDARD 5: TECHNOLOGY RESEARCH TOOLS Students use technology to locate, evaluate and collect information from a variety of sources. Students use technology tools to process data and report results. Students evaluate and select new information resources and technological innovations based on the appropriateness to specific tasks o Use Internet resources and other electronic information resources with assistance o Describe ways technology can be used to organize and reorganize information o Perform simple key word searches o Use simple menus to locate information from electronic media o Select and use appropriate tools and technology resources, with assistance, to accomplish a variety of tasks and solve problems COMPETENCY STANDARD 6: TECHNOLOGY PROBLEM-SOLVING AND DECISION-MAKING TOOLS Students use technology resources for solving problems and making informed decisions. Students employ technology in the development of strategies for solving problems in the real world. o Select appropriate resources from a variety of media formats, understanding that information is stored and accessed in different ways 4

5 Targeted Technology-Related Common Core State Standards (CCSS) Writing Standard 6 Grades K-2. With guidance and support from adults, use a variety of digital tools to produce and publish writing, including in collaboration with peers. Grade 3. With guidance and support from adults, use technology to produce and publish writing (using keyboarding skills) as well as to interact and collaborate with others. Grade 4. With some guidance and support from adults, use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing as well as to interact and collaborate with others; demonstrate sufficient command of keyboarding skills to type a minimum of one page in a single sitting. Grade 5. With some guidance and support from adults, use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing as well as to interact and collaborate with others; demonstrate sufficient command of keyboarding skills to type a minimum of two pages in a single sitting. Writing Standard 7 Grades K-2. Participate in shared research and writing projects. Grade 3. Conduct short research projects that build knowledge about a topic. Grade 4. Conduct short research projects that build knowledge through investigation of different aspects of a topic. Grade 5. Conduct short research projects that use several sources to build knowledge through investigation of different aspects of a topic. Writing Standard 8 Grades K-1. With guidance and support from adults, recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question. Grade 2. Recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question. Grade 3. Recall information from experiences or gather information from print and digital sources; take brief notes on sources and sort evidence into provided categories. 5

6 Grade 4. Recall relevant information from experiences or gather relevant information from print and digital sources; take notes and categorize information, and provide a list of sources. Grade 5. Recall relevant information from experiences or gather relevant information from print and digital sources; summarize or paraphrase information in notes and finished work, and provide a list of sources. Speaking and Listening Standard 5 Grade 2. Create audio recordings of stories or poems; add drawings or other visual displays to stories or recounts of experiences when appropriate to clarify ideas, thoughts, and feelings. Grade 3. Create engaging audio recordings of stories or poems that demonstrate fluid reading at an understandable pace; add visual displays when appropriate to emphasize or enhance certain facts or details. Grade 4 Add audio recordings and visual displays to presentations when appropriate to enhance the development of main ideas or themes. Grade 5. Include multimedia components (e.g., graphics, sound) and visual displays in presentations when appropriate to enhance the development of main ideas or themes. In order to achieve these expectations outlined in the CCSS, the Plymouth Public Schools have outlined the following computer and keyboarding skills to be mastered at each grade level: 6

7 Plymouth Public Schools Grade Level Expectations for Technology In order to achieve the expectations outlined in the Connecticut Computer Technology Competency Standards and in the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in Literacy, the Plymouth Public Schools have outlined the following technology skills to be mastered at each grade level: Basic Computer Function Expectations Grades K and 1 1. Turn on the computer 2. Understand computer parts terminology including mouse, keyboard and monitor 3. Understand how to take care of a computer (no food or drink) 4. Use a mouse and track pad 5. Double click on an icon to launch a program Grade 2 Students will be able to (do all of the above plus): Open a file and save a file Use next and back buttons Plug in microphone and headphones Maximize and minimize windows Grade 3 Students will be able to (do all of the above plus): Understand how to read a split screen and use two scroll bars (i.e. CBAS) Grade 4 Students will be able to (do all of the above plus): Create a folder and organize files Grade 5 All of the above 7

8 Internet and Internet Research Expectations Grades K- 2 Discuss appropriate use of technology Click on icon to open internet Type in a teacher-selected website ( etc.) Answer questions and recall information from shared discussions using internet-sites Use the internet to problem-solve (see for some sites) Grades 3 Students will be able to (do all of the above plus): Discuss advantages and disadvantages of using technology Work collaboratively with peers when using technology Type in a search engine address (i.e. Start to use a search engine for research with teacher selected key words and teacher support Grades 4 and 5 Students will be able to (do all of the above plus): Understand that different websites have differing credibility Understand internet safety and ethics and review internet safety packet Come up with key words and do basic searches for a teacher suggested/approved topic Find appropriate information relevant to topic Take notes using digital sources Use information from internet for short research projects Provide a list of sources 8

9 Keyboarding//Media Expectations Kindergarten Begin to locate keys on the keyboard using a typing program (e.g. Type to Learn) Multi-Media Use digital programs to illustrate ideas (e.g. Disney digital painter to illustrate a story) Grade 1 Use a typing program (e.g. Type to Learn) to develop keyboarding skills plus: Apply the following skills to classroom projects/writing using technology (at least 1 per year): o Type lowercase o Use upper case to begin a sentence o Spacing between words (1 space) and after sentences (2 spaces). o Use end mark - period o Backspace o Use enter to get to next line o Commas (in a series) Multi-Media Use digital programs to illustrate ideas (e.g. Disney Digital Painter to illustrate a story) Grade 2 Use a typing program (e.g. Type to Learn) to develop keyboarding skills plus: Apply the following skills to classroom projects/writing using technology (at least 2 per year): o All of the skills from grade 1 o Begin to use home row to type. o Know differences between caps lock and shift. 9

10 o Delete and backspace. o Use row keys to go up and down rows o Use Apostrophe Creating Media Presentations Create an audio recording of a poem or story (CCSS.SL.5) Grade 3 Use a typing program (e.g. Type to Learn) to develop keyboarding skills plus: Apply the following skills to classroom projects/writing using technology (at least 2 per year): o All of the skills from grades 1 and 2 o Use quotation marks for dialogue and short titles o Scroll up and down to go to bottom of page o Use tab key to indent paragraph o Use spell check Creating Multimedia Presentations o Create an engaging audio recording of a poem or story demonstrating fluency Grade 4 Use a typing program (e.g. Type to Learn) to develop keyboarding skills plus: Apply the following skills to classroom projects/writing using technology (at least 2 per year): o All of the skills from grades 1-3 o Use home tab: Highlight, underline, bold, italics Use copy and paste Change fonts, color, size of text o Understand that different programs may have functions in different places (i.e. Google docs vs. Microsoft Word) o Single and double space o Use Thesaurus tool 10

11 Creating Multimedia Presentations Students will create at least one multi-media presentation (using Power Point or a similar program) related to classroom curriculum. As part of this presentation, students will be able to: o Create a slide o Change the layout of slides o Insert clip art (using Insert button) o Use Design tab to choose a template design o Use spell check and other word processing supports o Add audio recordings Grade 5 Use a typing program (e.g. Type to Learn) to develop keyboarding skills plus: Apply the following skills to classroom projects/writing using technology (at least 2 per year): o All of the skills from grades 1-4 o Use shortcuts keys (control + c = copy, control + v=paste, etc.) o Left justify, right justify, and center text o Use numbering and bulleting Grade 5 Creating Multimedia Presentations Students will create at least one multi-media presentation (using Power Point or a similar program) related to classroom curriculum. As part of this presentation, students will be able to: o Grade 4 presentation skills (see above) o Copy and paste pictures from the internet and evaluate appropriateness of pictures for purpose of presentation o Insert SmartArt o Use Animations and Transitions tabs o Use spell check and other word processing supports 11
