10 Teaching/Learning and Assessment Strategies (reference should be made to the University s Learning and Teaching Strategy and to programme-specific features) The dual nature of the learning on the programme - i.e. the academic and professional practice dimensions means that assessment strategy must reflect both. There will be equal emphasis on academic and practice-based assessment in this Programme, as required by the GSCC in stipulating that there must be a minimum of 200 academic learning and 200 practice-based learning days on the Programme. E-Learning. The Programme's learning and teaching strategy has an E-learning element using Learnwise which is designed to maximise the student's ability to access and evaluate electronic resources relevant to social work practice, and to utilise electronic information skills at ECDL 1 standard. The range of learning and teaching approaches adopted on this Programme includes: a. Service user involvement to enrich and deepen the student's awareness and appreciation of themes under discussion, which will be included in all the sections below. b. Whole group sessions where key themes and topics will be introduced to the student group as a cohort. c. Small group sessions where students will be encouraged to explore issues at greater depth. d. An Experiential Approach is adopted in some modules, particularly where there is a focus on skills development. e. Peer group working- designed to help students learn to work together and present material collaboratively. f. Guest lecturers to bring specific expertise into student's learning opportunities and develop partnership & participation. g. Workshops to develop and consolidate I.T. skills up to ECDL 1 standard. h. Practice-based learning This involves an initial 5 day shadowing experience at Liverpool PSS as part of their assessed preparation for practice. During this period students will undertake an assessed interview of a service user. Following satisfactory completion of the assessed preparation for practice students undertake a 35 day Practice Learning Opportunity - an 80 day practice-learning opportunity in an appropriate agency at Intermediate and an 85 day practice-learning opportunity in an appropriate agency at Honours Level. i. Theory/Practice Integration sessions (TPI)

11 Students will participate in a series of TPI sessions to help develop their inter-professional skills and awareness including the imperative of integrating theory and practice. This will include problem based learning, for example. j. The development of a Professional Development Portfolio Throughout all three levels of the Programme to help students develop their reflective practice abilities in preparation for their professional career it will be a requirement to complete a Professional Development Portfolio. k. Independent Learning and Guided Study - where students manage their own learning, with guidance from academic tutors. l. Learning contract managed by personal tutor and facilitated by the practice learning assessor. The range of approaches to summative assessment on the Programme is intended to reflect the range of learning outcomes and the professional requirements laid down by the GSCC. It is also designed to ensure that students have a range of appropriate assessment opportunities to demonstrate their academic and practice-based competence. The assessment methods include: a. Practice dissertation at Level Three to demonstrate the student's ability to reflect critically and comprehensively on their practice and how it is informed by underpinning knowledge and relevant research. b. Written assignments where students are expected to demonstrate their ability to critically analyse and discuss key social work concepts and underpinning knowledge. c. Case studies where students apply knowledge and learning to given scenarios to demonstrate their ability to develop informed & reflective judgements d) Presentations where students present their findings to their peers. All candidates must pass checks deemed necessary for registration as a student social worker by the GSCC (including health and criminal convictions checks). These checks including CRB will be handled by the Faculty Office and supervised by the Course Leader to ensure rigorous application of procedures. All suitable candidates will be interviewed to ascertain their suitability and capacity for professional practice. The selection process will consist of a group discussion and individual interview. The group will be asked to discuss a current social work related issue. Applicants will be required to have achieved and be able to evidence an appropriate level of competence in spoken and written English. The University's APL procedures conform to the requirements of the GSCC in that there will be no exemption of the 200 days assessed practice. Owing to the professional accreditation of the programme the normal procedures for APL on to the programme will therefore only be used in exceptional circumstances. Points of reference (e.g. Guidelines for Basis for Registration from the BPS, December 2001) Specification last modified on: Modified by: A number of internal and external reference points have been used to guide the development of this curriculum: Internal: The University s Mission and Strategic Aims. This document has informed the development of the programme, in particular, the ways in which the programme fits in with the Hope ethos. It is anticipated that many of the students graduating from this programme will remain on Merseyside to contribute to the general well being of the community and help ease the chronic shortage of social workers in the region. External: The QAA benchmarking statements for social work and the National Occupational Standards for Social work. The QAA Benchmarking statements are identified against each module as are the National Occupational Standards. However, for ease of interpretation the latter are included at 3.4 below. The full QAA Benchmark statements for social work can be seen at Appendix 3. In addition, comments and support from staff from PSS, SACCS, Sefton Social Services, Merseyside LRN staff and individual service users have all made significant contributions to the development of this programme of study September 2006 John Bates
