Credits 4 Hours Prerequisite: - BUS 101 and MAT 112 COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course provides a survey of the operations function within a variety of enterprises and an understanding of how the design, operation and control of systems can most effectively provide goods and services. Topics include operations strategy, process selection, quality management and control, supply chain management, forecasting, scheduling, inventory planning and control, and lean systems. (Fa, Sp, Su) Prerequisites: BUS 101, MAT 112 and junior standing. 1

For a total of two times, if you inform the instructor, by , prior to the class time, that you will not be present in class and reason why, you will receive 1 point for that class. After two times any miss from class will be considered unexcused and you will not receive the 2 points attendance for that class. If the miss occurs after the two times, you will need to provide written documentation from an appropriate authority concerning your absence to receive 1 point for that class. In Class Activities: - 25 points Throughout the course there will be class activities, (group and individual) that will be completed in class and handed in. Class Activities can not be made up. If you are not in class you can not complete the class activity. Unannounced Quizzes: - 50 points A number of short, unannounced quizzes will be given in class during the semester. They may address material already covered in class, but could also address material that has been covered only in assigned readings. To prepare for the quizzes you should attend all classes and keep up with the readings in the text. The best n-1 of n (e.g. the best 7 of 8) quiz grades will be used to determine the quiz portion of your grade. 3
4 Group Assignments: (done in groups of two to three students) The purpose of these assignments are to develop a better understanding of the practice of OM by attending and writing a report on an industry interaction event and to develop an awareness and appreciation of the impact of operations management (OM) on the daily conduct of business by writing a current events report. Industry Interaction Exercise 30 points There are many professional societies in existence. Three in our areas (and also national) are APICS (Association for Operations Management), ISM (Institute for Supply Management), and ASQ (American Society for Quality). These organizations sponsor professional development meetings (PDMs), seminars and plant tours. For this exercise you must attend one of these events (as a group of two or three students) and write a group 2 page report that summarizes the ideas and activities presented. The written report must be submitted shortly after you attend the event (within a week of the date of the event). There will be a fee to attend these events usually ranging from $10 - $25. The student is responsible to pay the fee. Current Event Exercise 40 points (30 pts paper, 10 pts presentation) Businesses and their operations are very topical subjects in the media. There are articles about OM related topics from all sections of our course material, such as supply change management, lead production, inventory, outsourcing, etc. For this exercise, as a group of two or three students, which will be assigned randomly, you will locate two articles concerning Operations Management concepts from publications such as the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Newsweek, etc. Your group will submit a document, 2 3 pages in length, summarizing the two articles, connecting them to our course material and provide your comments and opinions about the subject and article. A group presentation will be required. Exams- 3 Exams, 70 Points each, Total 210 Points - Please see the course schedule for chapters covered for each exam. The exam can consist of multiple choice, true/false, and short answers. The 3 rd exam will be taken as shown on the Final Exam Schedule for Spring The final exam schedule can be found at You will be allowed 1-8 ½ x 11 ONE SIDE ONLY sheet of notes to use during each exam. GENERAL COMMENTS: NO electronic devices are to be used during class lectures. This includes phones, tablets and laptops. During class activities, you will be using a laptop computer or a tablet. You will be notified in class, when it is appropriate to use your electronic devices. Be prepared: You will get more out of this course when you are prepared. As we go through the course, I may be calling on students for participation randomly. Respect each other and each other s ideas at all times. Don't interrupt someone else; do not talk to your neighbor during class, etc. Please keep it 4

Absences WILL negatively impact your overall grade. I will take attendance at every class. Please refer to the Attendance Course Required earlier in the Syllabus for details. Please note that arriving to class more than 10 minutes late will count as an absence. If I have taken attendance before you enter the class, please notify me that you are present at the end of class. Please communicate with me if there are any attendance situations. Make Up Policy In general there is no make up work for missing any assignments or exams. Late submission: Late submission for work will not be accepted. Please become familiar with the due dates on the syllabus. Please communicate with me if there are problems with meeting these due dates well in advance of the due date.
