1 Lesson Plan 8: Developing a Scholarship Portfolio Core Area: Financial Planning Total Time: 50 minutes. Target Grades: Appropriate for Grades 9-12 Recommended for grade 11 or 12 Suggested Timeline: Grade 11: Spring Semester or Grade 12 Fall Semester ASCA Correlation (Which of the ASCA Standards does this lesson address?) By the end of the lesson, students will understand what items should be included in a Scholarship Portfolio and will have begun building their own Scholarship Portfolio. Materials Needed (What materials are needed to deliver this lesson?) Reserve computer lab or computer cart Building Your Scholarship Portfolio worksheet By session 2, students will need work samples and other artifacts for their scholarship portfolio Advance Preparation (What does the instructor need to do in advance in order to be prepared to deliver this lesson? How much time is required for advance prep?) Print the Building Your Portfolio Worksheet - 10 min Ask students to bring Scholarship Portfolio artifacts to class for the second session Activator (Typically 5-10 minutes) (How will you tap into the learners background knowledge and help them view the lesson as relevant?) Demonstrate the importance of building your scholarship portfolio by discussing the following points: Scholarships are available for many things: ethnicity, special talents, special hobbies, volunteer work, creative skills, specific professional areas, and a variety of other items By developing an understanding of your own special interests and skills, you will be more likely to find, apply for, and be awarded scholarships Preparing a Scholarship Portfolio will prepare and organize you for the application process will: Allow students to organize and store all of the materials that they would like to use as part of their Scholarship Portfolio Save student work 1

Distributes the Building Your Scholarship Portfolio Worksheet 1: Brainstorming 2. Asks students to partner up with one other student or with a small group. 3. Asks teams to brainstorm documents or artifacts that could be included in the scholarship portfolio. 2 Students Brainstorm artifacts that could be included in the Scholarship Portfolio with their team and writes them on the worksheet 3 School Counselor Asks each team to share their ideas Writes ideas on the board Homewor k 4 Student Generates a list of documents or artifacts that they would like to include in their own Scholarship Portfolio 5 Student Gathers documents and artifacts that they would like to include in their Scholarship Portfolio 2 6 School Counselor If possible, students create electronic copies of all items by scanning or taking digital pictures. They should these items to themselves or save them to a flash drive Assists students in making electronic copies of their documents and artifacts (if they did not do so at home) 7 Students Attach Documents to the appropriate area of their portfolio Writes descriptions of activities in appropriate area of their portfolio. 8 Students Completes reflection question, What will you do in the future to become an even more impressive candidate for scholarships volunteer? Join clubs or organizations? Design, develop or create something? Describe the next step that you would like to take to prepare for the scholarship application process. (This question is also located on the student worksheet) 2
3 Session # Step # Responsibility Action Steps 9 Student Saves the worksheet in a paper portfolio or attaches an electronic copy to their Portfolio (chart from RI School Counselor Association s Toolkits, found at Summarizer/Informal Assessment (Typically 5-10 minutes) (How will you engage learners in processing and summarizing what they learned? How will you know that the objective has been achieved?) Complete reflection in Portfolio of Ask students to share some of the items or artifacts that they have included in their portfolio Follow-Up (What additional learning could occur during the year? When?) Students can create a PowerPoint or slideshow highlighting some of their best accomplishments. Students should continue to update their portfolio on a regular basis 3
4 What Belongs in Your Scholarship Portfolio? A Scholarship Portfolio is an area where you store everything about you that you re proud of. Have you written an excellent paper? Won a talent show? Volunteered at your local food bank? Has someone written you a wonderful letter of recommendation? If you have documents or artifacts (an artifact is a picture, certificate, program, award, etc.) from any of those activities, you should be storing them in your Scholarship Portfolio. You can create a Scholarship Portfolio within your Portfolio by attaching documents to the portfolio and filling out some of the personal information within the portfolio. Then all of your best work will be neatly stored and organized in one place. Brainstorm ideas about documents and artifacts that someone might want to include in their portfolio with your partner or team and write them down here. What documents or artifacts would you like to store in your own portfolio? Be creative! 4
5 Building Your Scholarship Portfolio Part I: Gathering Your Documents and Artifacts 1. Gather all of the documents and artifacts from your list of items that you would like to include in your personal portfolio. 2. Create electronic copies of all items by taking digital pictures or scanning 3. Sort your documents and artifacts in the following categories: a. Career Planning: Personal Assessment Results, Aptitude Test Results, items related to work experiences or job shadowing, etc. b. College Planning: Items related to internships or mentorships, copies of standardized test scores, etc. c. Your Profile: Items related to your personal experiences, extra-curricular activities, physical health activities, awards, distinctions, honors, leadership experiences, letters of recommendation, projects that you ve completed, photos of artwork, woodwork, design, or home repair, volunteering experiences, recordings of your musical talent, papers or school projects that you did well on anything that you re proud of or would like to share that doesn t fit in the Career or College Planning Categories goes here. Part II: Connecting Your Documents and Artifacts to your Portfolio 1. Sign in to 2. Click on the Your Portfolio Tab 3. Click on the section called Career Planning b. Attach all of the items and artifacts that you sorted into the Career Planning Category 4. Now click on the section called College Planning b. Attach all of the items and artifacts that you sorted into the College Planning Category 5. Now click on the section called Your Profile b. Attach all of the items and artifacts that you sorted into the Your Profile Category All of the items that you attached make up your Scholarship Portfolio! You can this page to other people if you would like them to review your documents. That can be particularly helpful if you re asking someone to write you a letter or recommendation. Be sure to update your portfolio regularly Part III: Adding detail to your Portfolio 1. You can add further information about your unique experiences and skills in the Your Profile Section of the portfolio. 2. Click on Your Profile then on Experiences and Activities 3. Fill out each section of this page with your experiences, activities, etc. 4. Be sure to keep this updated throughout the school year! 5
