1 Australian Higher Education Sector Women s Leadership Journey Supporting and empowering women across the Australian Higher Education Sector Commencing February 2016 For over ten years, Women & Leadership Australia (WLA) has been guiding Australian women across all industries towards greater career success and life satisfaction. The Women s Leadership Journey has been developed in partnership with Australia s National Excellence in Educational Leadership Initiative (NEELI) to meet specific development needs of women working across all areas of the higher education sector. The program has been shaped by input from a wide range of stakeholders including countless hours of interaction with female leaders across the higher education sector. This collective expertise imbues The Women s Leadership Journey with a potent mix of understanding, advice and strategy for addressing the unique challenges and complexities that women face in navigating their path through Australia s higher education sector. The Women s Leadership Journey provides a powerful forum for female leaders to connect with peers and to think deeply about what it means to be a female leader in an educational setting Janet Horton Women & Leadership Australia

2 The Leadership Women s Leadership Journey Journey The Women s Leadership Journey The Women s Leadership Journey is built around four distinct but complimentary modules which together form the foundations of how we interact as individuals and teams. The structure of the program optimises the learning outcomes of each module, as well as contributing to the overall flow, ensuring a logical progression from one module to the next. Through mastery of each of the elements discussed, participants can take an important step towards a deeper understanding of how they react in a wide variety of situations. During the 14 week course, participants explore their roles and responsibilities through he filter of four modules: Module 1 Communication Mastering flexible communication Interpreting different communication styles effectively is fundamental to building lasting interpersonal relationships. In the workplace effective communication is the vehicle that achieves results, so getting it wrong is not an option. We all have a basic understanding of how people communicate but this module focuses on the key concepts of personal communication style, how to identify and master your dominant style, how to correctly interpret the style of others and most importantly how to be flexible enough to communicate optimally with differing styles. Mastering these techniques will rapidly enhance your ability to communicate purposefully in any situation. Communication Team Dynamics Change and Innovation Resilience The program is underpinned by a state of the art integrated online learning approach ensuring participants have the opportunity to connect powerfully with both their peers and the course facilitator. Module 2 Team Dynamics Understanding team dynamics Leading a team or working as part of one is a daily requirement for most of us. During this module participants explore the practical implications of both participating in and managing diverse groups. Participants examine the qualities shared by highperforming teams and identify effective personal and group strategies to foster an environment that supports optimal teamwork. Who is the program for? Aspiring leaders The Women s Leadership Journey represents an exceptional platform for aspiring female leaders to gain valuable exposure to issues they may encounter on their leadership journey. The program allows aspiring leaders time to reflect on their career aspirations and identify the key steps necessary for stepping into a leadership position. New leaders The Women s Leadership Journey meets key leadership development priorities for new leaders. Current leaders benefit enormously from connecting with their peers and discussing their leadership challenges in a supportive and engaging environment. Professionals not in formal leadership The Women s Leadership Journey is a highly effective interpersonal skills development platform and equally relevant for indivduals who are not in a formal leadership position. During the program, participants focus on their unique experiences as female educators, and consider the broader implications of gender equality throughout the Australian education system. Module 3 Change and Innovation Embracing change and driving innovation Change on some scale is a constant in most workplaces and how we deal with change has a major impact on our day to day experience. This module focuses on the skills involved in embracing and driving innovation and change. Participants critically discuss the application of relevant theory and explore the way in which innovation and change are inextricably intertwined. Participants then examine challenges during times of change, gaining an understanding of the way in which we can be more agile and resilient through the change process. Module 4 Resilience Building resilience and overcoming challenges The final module explores the concept of resilience particularly during challenging times or in highly pressurised environments. Personal resilience is not only about strength through adversity but the ability to grow and adapt as a result of disruption, to move forward stronger than before. Participants are asked to consider resilience at both a personal and organisational level. Participants go on to learn about ways to build resilience in their teams, and manage challenging situations more effectively.

3 The Leadership Women s Leadership Journey Journey A tremendous opportunity for women in higher education How is the program delivered? 01 Webinar session 1: Communication Part 1 The Women s Leadership Journey is delivered through NEELI s acclaimed Online Learning Portal and combines live webinar discussion with self paced online learning. The program is delivered from NEELI s state-of-the-art elearning campus in Melbourne. A team of experts are always on hand to assist participants and answer all of your technology questions. The program alternates between delivery modes to create a rich and engaging learning environment. 14 weeks Webinar session 2: Communication Part 2 Webinar session 3: Team Dynamics Part 1 Webinar session 4: Team Dynamics Part 1 Webinar session 5: Change and Innovation Part 1 Webinar session 6: Change and Innovation Part 2 Webinar sessions Throughout the program participants engage in eight live webinar sessions, focused on rich discussion and debate, relevant to each topic area Webinar session 7: Resilience Part 1 Webinar session 8: Resilience Part 2 Self-directed learning Throughout the program, content and media for each module is accessible 24/7 via a state-of-the-art online learning management system that allows participants to engage with it any time from any device. Interactive online community During the program, participants have 24/7 access to the interactive online portal which connects them with other female leaders from across the country. 4 Women s Leadership Journey Supporting and empowering todays female leaders Registration details Interested parties are required to complete a program registration Form. Admission into the program is at the discretion of NEELI. A registration form may be obtained by contacting the NEELI office on What does the program cost? Standard enrolment fee: $2,695 Subsidised enrolment fee for women in higer education: $1,695 (additional discount applies for early bird registrations) Why is the program subsidised for women in the higher education sector? Through NEELI s corporate partnerships arrangement funding is presently available to women in the higher education sector to offset $1,000 of program fees. Through the funding mechanism, NEELI aims to increase the accessibility of the program to a greater percentage of women across the higher education sector. Funding applicants are required to acknowledge their intention to seek funding via the formal registration form. Funding is awarded at the discretion of the NEELI Scholarship Committee and is subject to state based quotas. 5 Women s Leadership Journey About NESLI and NEELI The National Excellence in School Leadership Initiative (NESLI) is a collaborative arrangement bringing together an unprecedented array of stakeholders with a common commitment around developing exceptional schools through exceptional school leaders. With seventy percent of Australia s 10,000 school principals reaching retirement age over the next five years, Australia is on the cusp of an unprecedented generational shift in school leadership. NESLI represents a unique, cross-sectoral response to the challenges and opportunities presented by this radical change. The National Excellence in Educational Leadership Initiative (NEELI) has evolved from the National Excellence in School Leadership Initiative (NESLI) as a vehicle to bring high quality leadership education to a broader mix of leaders in the education sector. Similar to NESLI, NEELI is a collaborative arrangement bringing together an impressive group of stakeholders with a common commitment around developing exceptional learning organisations through exceptional leadership. the immediate need to equip Australian educators across all divides with the skills, knowledge and confidence to overcome the complex leadership challenges in today s learning environments. In conjunction with many of Australia s most respected educational institutions, NESLI and NEELI are creating a new national standard in educational leadership. Over the coming years, this alliance will enable educational leaders across the country to benefit from world standard leadership development and gain access to a national network of like-minded educational leaders. Whilst workplace training is essential to developing skills, the immense power of women and leadership forums resides in bringing women together to explore their potential as well as their challenges in a supportive and empathetic environment. Women & Leadership Australia (WLA) is a national initiative committed to supporting the increased representation of women in business and community leadership roles. WLA is based on the belief that women represent an enormously under-utilised national resource. Through supporting a greater percentage of talented women to progress into leadership positions, tremendous cultural and economic benefits will follow. The initiative comprises a range of professional development programs, advisory services, and research endeavours. Since its inaugural forum in 2003, over 50,000 women have participated, making WLA Australia s peak leadership initiative for women. Each year thousands of women continue to benefit from the program, ensuring the initiative is widely accepted by business leaders as critical to the ongoing development of Australian leadership. WLA was first developed - and continues to operate - under the auspices of the Australian School of Applied Management. The scope and quality of WLA s services are the result of the dedicated work of ASAM in conjunction with a broad group of stakeholders spanning government, private industry and academia.
