1 FISH MANAGEMENT AND AQUACULTURE MAJOR Of the Recreation and Wildlife Technology Plan for Assessment of Student Academic Achievement From the Mission of Hocking College Hocking College is an innovative, experience-based technical college that nurtures learning and learner success. Mission of Academic Affairs Unit Nurtures learning and learner success. Mission of School of Natural Resources and Ecological Sciences To prepare individuals for careers as technicians in the natural resources profession. Emphasis is placed on basic theory, developing a sustained positive work ethic, and the practical application of the development of the competencies and outcomes required for entry-level positions in the natural resources industry. Mission of Fish Management and Aquaculture Major To prepare individuals for careers with land, water and resource management agencies, both public and private, in such positions as fish and wildlife conservation aides, fish hatchery technicians, soil conservation service technicians, and private fish culture owner/operator and to provide a background sufficient for growth and advancement in the fish and aquaculture profession. Program Outcomes The following outcomes express additional, particular skills, behaviors, and attitudes cultivated in students seeking the Associate Degree in Fish Management and Aquaculture. 1. Demonstrates fish management skills. 2. Collects, analyzes and interprets data. 3. Uses scientific method and ecological concepts to manage and/or propagate aquatic ecosystems and organisms. 4. Demonstrates proficiency with written and verbal skills. 5. Demonstrates computer and technological skills. 6. Operates equipment safely. 7. Uses trade skills to maintain facilities and equipment. 8. Demonstrates aquaculture techniques. 9. Develops skills to obtain certifications appropriate to the profession. 10. Demonstrates basic management and leadership skills. 11. Exhibits professional and ethical behavior. The Success Skills and Program Outcomes combine to form a single set of skills, behaviors, and attitudes determined desirable for entry-level practitioners in Fish Management and Aquaculture, for graduates transferring to four-year institutions, and for educated citizens. 13 11. One hundred percent of students who earn the associate degree in the Fish Management and Aquaculture major will pass a fish identification test with a score of 92 percent or above. Number of students tested: 46 Number of students who passed exam with 92% or higher: 43 Note: The exam required identification of fish to the species level of classification. It consisted of 25 of the most common game fish from Ohio and the central U.S. For the 2009/10reporting period, 43 students passed the fish identification test with a score of 92% or better. This 93.4% success rate fell below the goal of 100%. For the 2008/09 reporting period, 31 students passed the fish identification test with a score of 92% or better.
