1 This Navigation Guide provides information to assist you in supporting students submitting their General Education Signature Assignments. You are requested to: 1. Provide the Signature Assignment Student Navigation Guide to your students. 2. Provide students with two electronic versions of your assignment question/prompt, one for each Learning Goal covered by your Signature Assignment(s). Students will enter their responses immediately after/below the question/prompt inside the file you provide them. (There is no submission form other than the file containing the assignment/prompt that you provide students.) 3. Inform students that their signature assignments must be submitted to Tk20 by a due date you determine and no later than the last day of finals week. You may assign a deadline any time prior to 11:55pm on the last day of finals week. 4. Require your students to submit their signature assignments exclusively via Tk20 to help ensure that all students upload their files to Tk20. Assignments should be uploaded without any identifying information such as student name, professor name, or course name. When you log into Tk20 as an instructor, you will be able to see who submitted each assignment and retrieve the assignments for grading purposes; however, the assessment team will not have access to any identifying information. 5. Monitor compliance and follow up with students to ensure all students submit their assignments. 6. If you wish, download your students assignments for grading purposes (and save them with filenames that include student names). Getting Started Prepare the Blank Signature Assignment File(s) 1. There is no Submission Form. For each of the two University-wide student learning goals covered in your course, provide students with a Word file that includes the assignment question/prompt. 2. Instruct students to use this file when they prepare their responses. They should insert their responses after/under the question/prompt. Students will need to submit their assignment once for each learning goal covered in your course; or, if your course has two signature assignments, one for each learning goal, then they will need to submit the correct assignment for each learning goal. (This is explained in the Student Navigation Guide.) Monitoring Signature Assignment Submissions Navigate to Tk20 Log into GothicNet and navigate to the TK-20 folder in your Main Menu:

2 Open the folder and select the TK-20 Higher Ed link Once you are automatically logged in to Tk20, click on your name at the top-right corner of the screen and select the Faculty role to access your courses and student assignment submissions. Select the Courses link on the menu to the left of the screen. Your Course Dashboard will be displayed. Under the Current Courses tab, find the relevant General Education course in the list of My Courses and click on the link. (After finals week, you will need to click on Previous Courses.) The Course information screen is displayed. Select the Activities tab. The names of the assignments will be displayed. Click on one of the Assignment links. Your Class Roster will appear with an icon indicating the status of each student s submissions. Assessments that you have already completed will appear with green icons; pending assessments (for you to complete) will appear with yellow icons; and assessments that have not yet been submitted by students will appear with gray icons. Please monitor the submission status for your students and follow up to ensure that students submit assignments by your due date and no later than 11:55 PM on the last day of finals week. Using Tk20 to Download Signature Assignments for Grading Accessing an Assignment Getting Started 1. Click on Courses in the main navigation menu.

3 2. Click on the course that has assignments you wish to download. Basic Information about the course will be displayed. 3. Select the Activities tab. The two signature assignment learning goals for the course will be displayed. Assignments with red flag indicators next to them (like Written Communication Signature Assignment Demo below) have submissions that are ready to be viewed and downloaded.

4 4. Select the Assignment you wish to view or download. In the above example, selecting Written Communication Signature Assignment Demo led to the following screen.

5 5. Click on a student s name to open that student s assignment for viewing or downloading. In the above example, the last submission in the list appears with a yellow icon indicating that an assessment is pending. When you click on the last student s name (Demo, Demo) next to the yellow icon, the following split screen is displayed.

6 6. After you click on the student s name to open the assignment, you will be presented with a split screen view. The left side of the split screen will show the student s assignment, and the right side of the split screen will show the assessment tool. The assessment tool may be used to record whether or not a student submitted the required assignment, but this is optional. You may view or download the assignment from this screen. You can click the arrow buttons or use the slider bars to navigate around each window and expand or contract either side while you work; you can also drag the center dividing line left or right to expand either side of the screen, and you can press CTRL+plus or CTRL-minus to expand or enlarge the entire screen for a better view.

7 7. On the left side of the screen, click on View and Annotate to view the assignment. Click Download to download the student submission to your hard drive. Downloading may be convenient for printing and grading; it may also enable a better viewing experience. 8. If you download the file to your hard drive for grading purposes, remember to save it with the student s name in the filename to keep track of whose assignment it is. 9. Press Submit or Close to return to the student list and open another assignment for viewing or downloading. Please gened@njcu.edu with any questions.
