1 My Name: Ben Smith (fictitious) My Photo: Languages I My Age: 5 (64 months) speak: English, German Things I am interested in: Individual needs: None I really enjoy being outside and finding out about the world. I love exploring and making dens. I am always full of energy and don t often sit still! I am really interested in Star Wars and often bring in my Star Wars figures from home to play with. I also draw lots of pictures of Star Wars characters with my friends. I like making music and am learning to play the piano at home. I was brave in the school talent show when I played Twinkle Twinkle Little Star for everybody! My views: My best thing at school is using the planks to make a den outside. I like it when my friend Sam plays dens with me! I am getting good at reading books by myself now and like to look at books about creepy crawlies. He has been particularly interested in mini-beasts this summer and has spent time carefully finding them in the digging area and then identifying them in a book. Ben has a very positive approach to learning and responds well when set a challenge. He can tend to dominate his peers and tends to think his way is always the right way! However, he is able to negotiate when supported by an adult. Ben shows great pride in his achievements and often asks to use the camera to record the outcome of his work. Ben tends to take the lead when set a challenge and is able to draw on previous teaching to aid his thinking e.g. when challenged to build a lighthouse, Ben made flaps at the base of his tube in the same way we had previously practised when making telescopes. With support, Ben can reflect on his activity and say what he would improve next time. Choosing ways to do things Comments: Ben is a confident and capable learner. He is resilient and demonstrates a real can do attitude to learning. He is curious and interested and loves to be challenged.

He is sociable and plays well cooperatively. Ben is very aware of the needs and feelings of others. He often volunteers to help if someone is hurt. Ben has made great progress this year in negotiating with others when playing. Ben has great self-confidence and a wonderful attitude to learning. He is keen to share his ideas in whole class situations and is independent when suggesting and selecting resources. He is a good leader and often guides others in play. Ben is always well-behaved and has an excellent understanding of the rules and routines at school. He is always keen to help and is able to resolve problems in play without adult support. Communication and Language Listening and attention Understanding Speaking Ben has a good attention span and often responds on the carpet with relevant answers or comments. He listens and responds well when playing with his peers. Ben follows instructions quickly and without fuss e.g. taking a message to another class. He understands familiar story patterns and can predict how a story might end. Ben is a confident and articulate speaker. He readily turns to language in his play and is often in character. He has a good awareness of space, even when moving at speed. He is able to use his body in a range of ways e.g. jumping, climbing, sliding, kicking etc. He also has good fine motor skills and can use tools efficiently e.g. he can hammer a nail into a piece of wood. Ben is righthanded and uses a pencil to form neat, regular letters. Ben is independent in managing his self-care, including getting dressed and using the toilet. He knows ways to keep himself healthy including drinking plenty of water, washing his hands and eating 5 a day. He has developed a good understanding of how to keep safe e.g. when moving the PE equipment around. Literacy Specific Areas Mathematics

4 ABC School Reading Writing Numbers Shape, space and measures Emerging Expected Exceeding Ben has made brilliant progress with his reading this year! He now reads confidently and independently, applying his phonic knowledge accurately to read new words. He loves talking about a wide range of books and can use non-fiction books to search for information. Ben is also applying his phonic knowledge to his written work. He is able to structure his ideas into a sentence and write it unaided e.g. I went to the sercus with my arntee. Ben has developed a good understanding of numbers to 20 and can count forwards and backwards to 20 and beyond. He can use numbers to solve simple problems e.g. finding double the spots on a ladybird, sharing out the segments of an orange with his friends. Ben is confident to compare items e.g. by length, weight or capacity. He is developing his understanding of coins and their value through role play. He can talk about significant times of the day e.g. he can use the clock to say that 3 o clock is home time! Understanding the World People and communities The world Technology Ben is confident to talk about his family and will often share news about his grandparents in Germany. He enjoyed telling the class about German Christmas traditions in December. Ben loves finding out about the world and often talks about the creatures he finds in the class garden. He has a good understanding of different environments and talked at length about the differences between England and the Antarctic. Ben uses a range of technology successfully at school and at home. He can use the camera competently and knows how to save his photos into his class file. He can programme the Beebot to travel through a route and loves using the microscope to look more closely at the insects he finds. Expressive arts and design Exploring and using media and materials Being imaginative Emerging Expected Exceeding Emerging Expected Exceeding Ben enjoys making music and will join in with singing songs at school. He enjoys experimenting with the junk modelling materials and will spend long periods of time embellishing a model with paint or collage. He can use a range of tools independently when being creative. Ben has a great imagination which he applies to the models he makes and the roles he takes on. His particular favourite is playing Star Wars!

5 Additional notes: Ben has attended ABC Out-of-School Club on a Monday and Wednesday afternoon during the summer term. His key worker (Fran) tells us that Ben demonstrates a can do attitude at out-of-school club too. His favourite activities are building with the junk resources and playing football with the bigger boys. He often shares his Star Wars figures with the other children too and proudly talks about what he knows. Ben s mum and dad: Ben loves coming to school and tells us lots about the things he gets up to with his best friend Sam! He likes making dens at home using some old sheets and poles in the garden. His dad loves Star Wars too and they often make lego models at home together. Final comment from Ben s teacher: Ben has had a great year in Red Class and is definitely ready for the challenges of Year 1! He has created an excellent foundation for future learning well done Ben! Next steps to support learning and development: Targets for Year 1: To become more confident at reviewing his own work to say what went well and what to improve. To learn to write sentences with a connective in. To learn to use a number line for adding and subtracting bigger numbers.
