The invitation to participate. The sharing of something about myself, and the vice versa. The exchange of names. This is a skill that I will use for much more than just science outreach.

10 PoP scientists attitudes about professional activities Preparing for these public engagements reenergizes my love for what I'm doing. It has helped me feel part of my community. This, for me, was the biggest impact, and a very important one. As a researcher, I often feel very isolated in the lab, and that my work will only have an impact in the long run. By adding outreach to my work, I can also know I am making an impact in the short term as well.

11 PoP scientists attitudes about professional activities [PoP] led me to apply for a fellowship to work on science policy, focusing on providing an overview of PES in different disciplines. PoP program inspired a [move] away from an isolated applied research setting and toward a broader science communication

12 Final thoughts Training Can promote and sustain public engagement by scientists Can improve scientists pedagogical and communication skills and abilities Can impact other professional practices of scientists Key training components build on proven practices ensure easy audience access provide ongoing support More studies are needed (including impacts on junior vs senior professionals)
