Getting Started Registering for Your OWLv2 Course When you are required to register for a new course, there are two codes you use to access your online materials. The first code you need is the Course Key, which is provided by your instructor, either as part of a registration URL or as a alphanumeric code. The Course Key is a 12 or 15 digit string of numbers and letters that identifies your course. The second code you need is an Access Code. This code is proof of purchase for your course materials. Your least expensive option for purchasing an Access Code is through the CengageBrain website, however, it can also come bundled with your textbook or it can be purchased at your bookstore. When submitted, this code provides you with continuous access to your online course materials. Note: Most courses offer the option of a free trial that allows you to try before you buy. The duration of the trial is 1 day per week of your course, with a maximum of 14 days beginning on the course start date. To be assured of uninterrupted access to your course, you need to submit an Access Code. If the trial deadline passes before you have a chance to make your purchase, your work is saved. However, you can no longer access your course until an Access Code is submitted. When first getting started with an OWLv2 course your instructor supplies you with a Course Key URL. The URL takes you to a CengageBrain site that is unique to your course and automatically provides the system with your Course Key. However, your instructor may provide you with the key code, in that case you need to enter it at the CengageBrain site yourself. When accessing the CengageBrain page you can either log in as a returning user or create a new account. Once your account is created, you can use your CengageBrain My Home page to purchase course materials, register for a new course, or open a registered course. December 15,2016 pg.2

Viewing Your Syllabus VIEWING YOUR SYLLABUS Your instructor may provide a syllabus page or document to relate important information about your class such as the start and end dates, your instructor's office hours, or contact information. A syllabus may also include a short description of the class, its objectives, and any prerequisites. If there is a syllabus linked to your course, a Syllabus button appears in the Go To column. To view the syllabus for a course, you can click either the button or the course name, which opens the syllabus in a new browser window. WORKING WITH ASSIGNMENTS Your instructor creates and assigns activities in OWLv2, which you access from your Assignments page. These activities include several assignment types, from graded tests to tracked reading assignments, and from interactive multi question groups to External assignments. OWLv2 is able to grade most of your assignments electronically; it tracks your progress, and then reports your scores to your instructor. Assignment content can range from simple lists of multiple choice questions, to complex equations with specialized editors, to reading an ebook chapter or external Web page, all depending on the course, subject, and textbook content. Some assignments offer feedback, resources, or interactive simulations to help your understanding of concepts and guide you in developing your answers. Other assignments may include personalized learning plans with study content that is determined by the results of a diagnostic pre test. Note: Your instructor can record any external, off line assignment and include those points in your OWLv2 course score. These assignments are then labeled as External to this website, and you can see basic information on both your Grades and Assignments pages. December 15,2016 pg.16

OWLv2 Assignments Overview Page Your school may provide Quick Prep or Adaptive Study Plan content, which are diagnostic assignments designed to help you get up to speed with skills you need for your chemistry course. You should complete your work in introductory Quick Prep assignments within the first week or two of your course's start date, so that you are prepared for concepts and topics you need to know. Check with your instructor to see if introductory assignments are being offered and if the work you do in these assignments counts toward your grade. Your instructor may make it mandatory for you to complete these assignments before starting the other assignments in your course. December 15,2016 pg.17

Guidelines for Taking Assignments These instructions detail how you can achieve the best results when taking an assignment. You can make sure you get full credit for your work by considering the following guidelines. Do not use your browser's forward, back, close, refresh, or history options. Doing so may cause you to lose your most recent changes. Wait for each page to completely load before proceeding. If you must leave your computer, do not leave the assignment open and inactive for more than 2 hours. If the browser crashes or becomes unresponsive and you must force quit, you can resume your take if you sign back into OWLv2 within a few minutes. In assignments that provide it, use the pop out Contact Technical Support button in the upper right corner to open the Cengage Learning support site in a new browser window. Use the available resources to search the knowledgebase or open a case if you are having problems using OWLv2. In questions with multiple steps, be sure you submit a response in all sections. Depending on how your instructor set the assignment options, you may not be able to go back to edit your answers in previous steps. Note: If you have answers that are unsubmitted at the item level, OWLv2 retains and records these responses when you submit the entire assignment for a grade. When using a constant required for a homework question, check that the constant on your calculator matches the value found on the Tables page in your assignment. December 15,2016 pg.18

Note: You can access the Tables page by expanding the References menu in your assignment and clicking the Tables link. Links for a periodic table and scientific notation are also located in References. Complete and submit your assignments before the Due Date and Time Allowed (not all assignments are timed or have due dates). There may be times when you can take an assignment past its Due Date (generally with a penalty), if your assignment has an Unavailable Date and you have not yet scored 100%. However, instructors generally penalize for each day that passes after the Due Date has passed. When available, use the Instructor button to send an message with a view of your response, your question, and the specific assignment content on which you are working. Assignments that permit you to save your progress and finish at a later time have a Save and Exit button. Otherwise, you are required to complete your assignment in one sitting. When available, clicking the Submit Answer button saves and scores your response. This action may also open additional content in your question. OWLv2 may provide an warning of any errors, however, you cannot change your final answer. Click the Finish Assignment button in Test, Mastery, and Non Mastery assignments when you are completely finished answering all questions. This action submits the assignment for a grade. Be aware that some assignments allow only one take. (This button can also be labeled Finish or Submit Assignment for Grading, depending on the assignment type.) December 15,2016 pg.19

Getting Started with the ChemDoodle Sketcher Some assignments may include the ChemDoodle Sketcher that is an editor you can use to produce models of molecules as your response. 43 Taking a Personalized Study Assignment Personalized Study assignments are learning tools that evaluate your knowledge and help you gauge your unique study needs. The Personalized Study Plan generated from your pre test results focuses your study time on the key concepts and problems you need to learn the most. Your work on a Personalized Study assignment is graded only when you access it from the Assignments page (even if you can also access it from the Study Tools page for self study). Typically, a Personalized Study assignment consists of a Pre Test, a Personalized Study Plan, and a Post Test. You start by taking the Pre Test, which provides you with an interactive, personalized study plan based on your initial test results. These study plans vary from one discipline to another, but typically include tutorials, interactive exercises, videos, animations, figures, and other on line learning materials drawn from your text. After you have worked through the Personalized Study Plan, you can take a Post Test. Taking the Post Test allows OWLv2 to assess your progress, and then provide you with additional, revised study materials to help you focus on areas where you need to improve. When Study Tools are given as a graded assignment, your instructor may choose to score the Pre Test, exclude the Pre Test or Post Test from the assignment entirely, or turn off access from the Study Tools page as your instructor may want to prevent self study on material intended for a grade. Action: To take a graded Study Tools assignment Depending on your book s title, edition, or subject matter, the link and button names you see may vary slightly from what s described here. 79 Accessing Your Study Tools Accessing Your Study Tools The Study Tools page displays the self study products you can access through OWLv2, such as ebooks, Quick Prep, Adaptive Study Plans, Tutorials, and Personalized Study Plans. Your products are available on this page once you have submitted the Course Key provided by your instructor and Content Access Code for your course materials. See Entering a Content Access Code on page 68. Accessing Study Tools for Self Study Note: The appearance and type of content available on your Study Tools page can vary, depending on the textbook you are accessing. December 15,2016 pg.76

Accessing Your Study Tools You do not need to be enrolled in a course to use your Study Tools materials for your own practice or self study. Some tests with Study Tools may not be available to you, if your instructor is using that content as part of a graded course assignment. A Mind Tap ebook Some or all of the ebook reading material is available for as online selfstudy. Depending on the title, some ebooks provide dynamic features such as highlighting text, bookmarks, flashcards, student notes, search capability, and a built in dictionary. In MindTap ebooks, use the Help icons (?) to see details on using these features. December 15,2016 pg.77

Accessing Your Study Tools Action: To access book content for self study in OWLv2 1 Sign in to OWLv2 by logging in to and clicking the Open button for your course. OWLv2 will open to the Assignments overview page in a new browser window. 2 Click the Study Tools link in the header to open the Study Tools page. 3 If necessary, select the appropriate book from the Textbook menu. 4 Make a selection from the drop down menu or click the link for the content you would like to study. Your selected content will then be displayed either on the current screen or in a new browser tab. Note: In Quick Prep and Adaptive Study Plans, content assigned for a grade is unavailable for self study. Clicking an Assignment only link will redirect you to the Assignments page. If the content is available for self study, you can click the Start Assignment button to begin. You may see some of the same questions that appear in your Study Tools in your graded course assignments, however, there are a few key differences: Course assignments taken from the Assignments page are always graded OWLv2 coursework. Work accessed from and completed in the Study Tools area is ungraded practice or self study. On the Grades you can see which material you accessed and how much time you spent on your self study materials. December 15,2016 pg.78

Accessing Your Study Tools A Study Plan Objectives Page Note: Instructors have the option to hide Pre Tests, Post Tests, and Worksheets from your Personalized Study Plans view if that content is being used as part of a graded course assignment. When Adaptive Study Plan and Quick Prep content is assigned for a grade, it is unavailable for self study. Clicking the Assignment only link that appears next to the assigned section will redirect you to the Assignments page December 15,2016 pg.79

Contacting Cengage Technical Support CONTACTING CENGAGE TECHNICAL SUPPORT If you re having trouble using OWLv2 and cannot resolve your issue using the online Help system, you can click the Cengage Technical Support button in the header or the link at the bottom of most pages to open the Cengage Customer Support page. These options both open the same primary support site provided by Cengage Learning. Cengage Customer Support Home Page Note: To see the status of an existing case, click Already have a case? Click Here. You can then sign in to access your case. If you use OWLv2 through Nelson Education, you can use the Nelson Technical Support link located in the footer. December 15, 2016 pg. 80

Contacting Cengage Technical Support Action: To access Cengage Learning Support 1 Click the Cengage Technical Support button in the header or the link in the footer of OWLv2 to open the Cengage Customer Support page in a new browser window. You can also direct your browser to support.cengage.com when you are not logged in to OWLv2. 2 Select I am a Student as your user type to displaythe What can we help you with? topic buttons in the lower section of the page. December 15, 2016 pg. 81

Contacting Cengage Technical Support Action: To access Cengage Learning Support 3 Click the appropriate button for the topic relating to your issue: Access Codes and Registration Account Questions Product & System Support Purchase Questions Refund 4 Select or enter your product on the Product Search page (OWLv2). You can then choose from a list of related FAQs. December 15, 2016 pg. 82
