1 CALIFORNIA INSTITUE OF INTEGRAL STUDIES Cross-Cultural Counseling and the Family (2 Units) MCP Tuesdays 12:45 to 2:45 COURSE CONTENT Instructor: Antonio Ramirez Hernandez, Psy.D. Telephones: Cell: This course looks at different levels of diversity and culture and their influence on psychotherapy. Therapists need to develop awareness of cultural variations and acquire therapeutic tools to address those differences. The expectation of the use of prevalent western European view of therapy as the only option for therapeutic process will be challenged and alternatives will be discussed. A review of some of the major cultural differences like race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, class, gender, religious, and language will be reviewed. Students in this course will have an opportunity to take a critical view of their own sociocultural position and issues related to their multicultural context and dynamics. Experiential exercises will be used to understand individuals worldviews and biases. LEARNING OBJECTIVES After completing this course, students will: 1. Know the basic concepts of cultural variations and diversity. 2. Challenging the personal position in the social hierarchy. 3. Students will gain knowledge of cross-cultural factors for therapy. LEARNING ACTIVITIES 1. Didactic: Lecture, discussion (50%) 2. Papers and experiential participation (50%) CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION 1) Didactic: Attendance. (30%) a) It is necessary to attend all classes. If you have to miss a class, let the instructor know and keep up with readings and didactic materials. If we watched a video you must arrange to watch it on your own.

2 2) Quality of participation and openness to feedback will be taken into account. Please be prepared to participate discussing the readings. (30%) 3) Assignments & papers. (30%) a) Assignments need to be turned in on the scheduled dates. b) Follow closely the directions for turning papers in. Papers requirements: Write the title of the paper, your name and date on the upper right corner of your papers. One line for title, one for your name, and one for the date.
