1 Valencia ARA1 Syllabus Summer 2016 Course Number: ARA-1120 Course Title: Elementary Arabic 1 Credit: 4 Credit Course Semester: Classes start on the 9 of May, 2016 and ends August 2, Place: Online Course. Instructor: Doctor Latifa Alioui lalioui@valenciacollege.edu Language of Instruction: English and Arabic Course Overview What is an on-line class? 1. This course is comprised of online assignments. It includes the following components: 2. A. Reading from your text: Alif Baa with Multimedia 3. B. Online work from the AL-KITAAB Companion Web Site. 4. All work is completed online. We'll use the textbook Alif Baa with Multimedia which includes access to the AL-KITAAB Companion Web Site, where you ll complete your assignments. It is important to keep in mind that this is NOT a self-paced course. You will need to meet certain deadlines throughout the semester. You may work ahead, however. In order to be successful in this course you should be self-motivated and have a good degree of self-discipline

2 TIME COMMITMENT: Successful performance in this course will require a regular, daily practice, and completing assignments. It is important that you study every day and review the material you have learned several times, including videos and Alif Baa Companion Web Site activities. All drills, assignments or quizzes for specific unit are due every Sunday at 12am. COURSE OBJECTIVES: To pronounce the Arabic vowels, consonants correctly. To pronounce Arabic words correctly, paying special attention to short and long vowels To begin to develop your ability to speak Arabic. To begin to develop your ability to understand spoken Arabic. To begin to develop your ability to read and write Arabic. To begin acquiring a working knowledge of Arabic grammatical structures and to apply these structures in speech and writing. To begin to develop your functional Arabic vocabulary. To begin to develop an awareness of various aspects of Arabic culture through reading and discussion. COURSE CONTENT: COURSE CONTENT: The Arabic alphabet (writing and sounds), Sun and Moon letters, short vowels and diacritics, feminine markers, greetings and introductions, basic vocabulary, masculine and feminine nouns and adjectives, the definite article, nationalities and affiliations, asking questions, personal pronouns, plural of nouns, nominal sentence: subject and predicate, genitive construction, possessive pronouns, the present tense, verbal sentence and various cultural aspects will be covered in this class. Each lesson contains: 1. Cultural Notes - are presented in the beginning of each unit to introduce students to geographic ethnic and socio-cultural aspects of selected areas of the Arab world. 2. Dialogues/monologues - are instrumental in promoting communicative competence. a. The Alif Baa dialogues/monologues introduce the vocabulary and the grammatical structures that will be practiced throughout the remainder of the lesson in the context of everyday situations. b. A video, which provides oral presentations of the dialogues/monologues in each unit in Alif Baa, will be used to support the lessons. 3. Vocabulary - list in each lesson is organized by grammatical functions to assist students in associating the various items with their role in communication.

3 4. Pronunciation narrations are used throughout the course in the Alif Baa dialogues and monologues, to assist students in associating various items with their role in communication. 5. Alif Baa DVDs - integrate Arab culture, Arabic language and alphabet in each lesson in various formats. COMPUTER REQUIREMENTS: Welcome to Arabic. This course relies heavily on technology since we will never "meet" in person but we will chat in real and deferred time using both text and sound (see Communication Tools below). In order to make all of the software work properly, please read carefully the following technical requirements. After doing this and downloading the necessary plug-ins (most of the plug-ins you already will have installed on your computer), you will receive instructions on how to logon to book site, which will serve as the course management system to the Arabic 1 course. System Requirements: microphone (either internal or external) earphones (these reduce feedback loops; ipod-style earphones will do just fine) Windows 2000, XP, Vista Mac (only, OS 10.3 or less cannot handle Arabic) Required plug-ins or add-ons: movie player that can play QuickTime: download QuickTime here Java: download here Flash 10 plugin to view multimedia files (earlier versions cannot handle Arabic): download here Suggested Browsers: For PC: IE 7 or FireFox 3.0 For MAC: Safari (latest version) or FireFox 3.0 HOW TO TYPE IN ARABIC: In order to type in Arabic and then toggle back and forth between English and Arabic, you need to add Arabic as an input method: For PC: Go to Start > Control Panel > Regional and Language Options > then add Arabic (Egypt) and/or Arabic QWERTY to the list in the pull-down menu. Now the letters

4 should be visible on the menu bar. Click there to find and choose it to type in Arabic. Click in the same place to restore the keyboard. For MAC: Go to System Preferences (under the apple icon) > International > input menu > then add Arabic or Arabic QWERTY. Now the "flag" icon will appear at the upper right. Choose Arabic or Arabic QWERTY to type. HOW TO RECORD YOUR VOICE: In this course you will be required to record your voice for many assignments, click on this links to record. REQUIRED MATERIALS: (1). Alif Baa with Multimedia Introduction to Arabic Letters and Sounds, Third Edition ISBN-10: ISBN-13: Publication Date: July 1, 2010 Book (Paperback) (2). All students are required to purchase an online access code, to access the text, exercises, videos and home works using the Text Book web site is mandatory; students are responsible to purchase the access rights to this web site. 6 vst=0 MAKE-UP POLICY: Typically, there will not be make up opportunities on most assignments, but I am willing to make exceptions under various circumstances. It is your responsibility to complete the assignment by the set deadlines. Every assignment will have a posted rubric, so you will know what my expectations are as well as the point distribution for every assignment. That being said, I understand that some of the writing assignments may seem daunting, and students who are willing to improve their work on assignments specified by the instructor, through seeking the feedback offered by their instructor and the writing center will be allotted the opportunity to submit for a re-grade. Make-up opportunities will not be available for students who miss the initial deadline, with the exception of extreme circumstances. LATE WORK: So here s the deal on late work: Unless there is a substantial, extenuating circumstance, it is impossible to get a perfect grade on work submitted late. For every day that progresses past the deadline, you will lose 10% of the points possible of your total grade on the assignment. For example, if you miss the deadline by one day on an assignment worth fifty points, the most you could earn (if you submitted a perfect paper) would be 45 points (you d lose 5 possible points, because 5 is 10% of 50). If you wait 3 days to turn in an assignment, you d lose 15 possible points out of 50, (which would mean the highest percentage you could get would be a 70%). I won t accept late work longer than a week past its original due date, and you wouldn t really make a lot of points off of that anyway. Look ahead and manage your time wisely. STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT: Valencia College is dedicated not only to the advancement of knowledge and learning but it is concerned with the development of responsible personal and social conduct. By enrolling at Valencia College, a student assumes the responsibility for becoming familiar with and abiding by the general rules of conduct. Disciplinary action could include being withdrawn from class, disciplinary warning, probation, suspension, expulsion, or other appropriate and authorized actions. You will find the Student Code of Conduct in the current Valencia Student Handbook. WITHDRAWAL POLICY: If you decide that you do not wish to proceed in this course, you may receive a refund if you drop the class before the drop/refund deadline, which is May 16, 2016 by 11:59pm. If you are unable to complete this course after that date, it is your responsibility to withdraw formally. You will not receive a tuition refund by this point. The withdrawal request must be received in the Registrar s Office by July 8, Failure to do so will result in your receiving a

7 performance grade, usually an F. If you drop a class or withdraw from the college before the official drop/withdrawal deadline, you will receive a W (Withdrawal) in each class dropped. To drop or withdraw from a course, sign into Atlas, select the Courses tab, select Register for Classes, and select the current term. From the Registration area, select Step 3: Register for Classes/Withdraw from Classes. Select the term again. Agree to the terms of the Enrollment Agreement. Enter the CRN for the course from which you plan to withdraw in the CRN field. Submit changes. 8 CREATING AN AL-KITAAB COMPANION SITE ACCOUNT: If you do not have an account, you need to create one. To do so, follow these steps: (1). Go to and click Create an account. (2). Select a username and password and enter your information, then click Submit. Note: Remember to write down your username and password and be sure to select the correct time zone. Also, please enter a valid address so we can send you your password if you forget it. ENTERING THE BOOK KEY AND COURSE CODE: Enter the book key and course code to complete the enrollment process. You may already have a book key, or you may need to purchase a book key. Note: Book keys can only be used once. Your book key will become invalid after you use it. I ALREADY HAVE A BOOK KEY: (1). Go to and log in. (2). at the top of the page, enter your book key and click Go. (3). Click Confirm to confirm your registration information. Your book will appear under the books heading. (4). besides the book listing, enter the course code in the Enter course code field and click Go. (5). If necessary, select a class or section and click Submit. I NEED TO PURCHASE A BOOK KEY: (1). Go to and log in. (2). At the top of the page, enter the course code and click Go. (3). If necessary, select a class or section and click Submit. The course and books will appear under the My Classes heading. (4). Locate the book and click buy. (5). Proceed through the purchase process. USING AL-KITAAB COMPANION SITE: To access your Student Workstation in the future, go to And log in. Here, you can open your book, submit activities, view your results, and view your instructor's feedback. If you have any questions, contact Al-Kitaab Companion Site Support at

9 CONTACT: I check my every day during the week, (Monday Friday). If you me and you do not hear from me within one business day (24 hours), please follow up with me; it is entirely possible that I didn t see it. If you contact me over the weekend, I will respond to you Monday. The Atlas help desk phone # is (407) A SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT COMPUTERS: Even though computers and word-processing software are marvelous time and energy-saving devices, they can (and do) cause problems with the production of your documents. Please be aware that a broken or ill-functioning computer, or the inability to retrieve, produce or submit your assignments from a computer will not be accepted as a valid excuse for a document that is submitted late. I advise you to save all your documents to a CD, cloud storage area, or a flash drive in addition to your hard drive.
