1 Technology Enhanced Learning Blackboard Guides Setting up a Turnitin assignment Why use Turnitin? Turnitin can be used to carry out originality checking of students work to mark and provide feedback on students work One Turnitin assignment point can be used to perform either or both of those tasks. Turnitin can be used as a tool to meet the University s expectations for online submission, marking and feedback of coursework. Using Turnitin is an efficient and convenient way to handle the submission and marking of formative and summative coursework by individual students. At the University of Reading Turnitin is fully integrated into Blackboard. This means that staff and students will access Turnitin features only via Blackboard, without having to log in separately to the Turnitin website. How to do it? Before setting up Turnitin on your Blackboard course, please ensure you are familiar with the University s recommendations for dealing with draft / developmental submissions late submissions extenuating circumstances It is recommended that you allow students the opportunity to submit drafts in advance of the due date either by setting up your assignment to allow resubmissions, or by setting up a separate Turnitin assignment for draft submissions. This approach can help to educate students about what constitutes plagiarism. It is not simply a getout mechanism for cheats students have to carry out a substantial rewrite of their text in order to see any significant reduction in their score. Allowing resubmissions also means students can submit an updated version of their work, even if originality reporting is not enabled, without having to contact their lecturer to request this. Step 1 Turnitin assignments can be set up in any content area on a Blackboard course. We recommend that staff use a consistent approach and place all assignment submission points in a menu area labelled e.g. Assessments or Assignment Submission. Go into the appropriate content area. 3 Step 3 Provide a title for the assignment, and assign a point value (if you are planning to assign marks through Turnitin and/or the Blackboard Grade Centre). The Assignment title should be clear and unambiguous (for the benefit of both students and those involved in assessing the work). For instance, use the title to identify separate Turnitin inboxes for draft and summative submissions, extensions and resits. The point value will normally be 100 (i.e. you will assign a percentage score) If you want originality checking carried out on all work submitted, select Allow only file types that Turnitin can check for originality. Only choose Allow any file type if students will be submitting files where originality checking cannot be carried out (e.g. MS Project, zip files, media files). You can use the calendar to insert dates, and select times from the drop-down lists. Start date the date from which students can submit work normally just leave this as today s date Due date the date and time by which students must submit work Post date when marks and/or feedback will become visible to students but please see the note below NOTE: For assignments with Anonymous Marking enabled, the post date determines when marks are posted to the Blackboard Grade Centre and when the author names are made available. Otherwise, in Blackboard, the post date relates to the availability of GradeMark papers only and has no bearing on when marks are posted to the Blackboard Grade Centre. 4 You will also need to select the option Reveal Grades only on Post Date under Optional Settings to control the release of marks to students see below. Step 4 Scroll down and click on + Optional Settings IMPORTANT: although marked optional it is vital that you check these settings whenever you set up a new assignment. Enter special instructions It is good practice to enter specific instructions for the assignment, so that students are absolutely clear what is required of them e.g. can they submit and resubmit drafts of their work? is there a standard setting for naming their files? Allow submissions after the due date? yes or no If you select Yes, then students can submit their work after the due date, and their work will be shown as Late. However practice in your area may be not to allow late submissions, but to set up a separate box for late submissions and extensions. Generate Originality Reports for submissions? Select Yes - anyone using Turnitin is almost certain to want to generate Originality Reports. Generate Originality Reports for student submissions You will be presented with the following options from the drop down menu : 1. immediately (first report is final) as soon as a paper is submitted the work will be checked for possible plagiarism; no resubmission possible. 2. immediately (can overwrite reports until due date) students can resubmit as often as they like up until the due date this is the option you will want to choose if you wish students to be able to redraft their work in response to the content of Originality Reports. 3. on due date reports are generated on the assignment's due date i.e. students can submit drafts of their paper up until the due date, but it is only the final paper which will be checked for plagiarism. 5 It is recommended that you allow students the opportunity to submit drafts in advance of the due date either by selecting option 2 above, or by setting up a separate Turnitin assignment for draft submissions. Allowing resubmissions also means students can submit an updated version of their work, even if originality reporting is not enabled, without having to contact their lecturer to request this. This approach can help to educate students about what constitutes plagiarism. Exclude Quotations / Bibliography / Small Matches Choose to exclude quotations, bibliography or small matches by selecting either Yes or No. The default selection of No means that all text in submitted papers will be subject to originality checking. You can safely leave these options set to No, but may wish to change them on certain modules e.g. on a Dissertation module you will almost certainly want to exclude bibliographic materials, and possibly quotations. You should aim for consistent practice across modules, and ensure that students are aware of any variations in practice. Allow students to see Originality Reports? It is recommended that you select Yes. Reveal marks to students only on post date? You should always select Yes. University of Reading December 2015 Page 5
6 This is an important setting, as it ensures that students cannot see their marks and feedback via the Blackboard My Grades tool before the post date (when such marks may well still be provisional and subject to change). Enable anonymous marking? Normally Yes - the University assessment regulations state that work should be marked anonymously wherever practical. Submit papers to Allows you to choose if students work is stored in the Turnitin paper database. The default setting of standard paper repository should be used in most cases, but for draft or developmental assignments you can choose no repository ( This means submitted papers to this assignment point will not be included in the Turnitin paper database Search options Accept the defaults to search all available sources for originality matching. Rubrics Please see the separate guidance for using Turnitin Rubrics and Grading Forms. You can use this section to apply a rubric or grading form to the assignment if you have created one. Tick the box beside Would you like to save these options as your defaults for future assignments? if you want to want to save the selections you ve made in option settings to use for other assignments you create. When finished, press the Submit button. University of Reading December 2015 Page 6
7 Ignore the warning message which appears if the post date is set 2 weeks after the due date and press OK. Blackboard will then acknowledge that the assignment has been created successfully. Students will see the Turnitin assignment as shown below. Making changes to a Turnitin assignment You can edit a Turnitin assignment in much the same way as other Blackboard content items. Click on the editing arrow next to the assignment name, then choose Edit. This opens Turnitin and allows you e.g. to change the due date, or to correct any errors in the original settings. N.B. some settings in particular turning Anonymous marking on or off cannot be changed once students have submitted work to the assignment. University of Reading December 2015 Page 7
