8 8 Helpful Tips fr CAL Mentrs & CAL Mentees As a L.E.A.D. Prgram Mentr yu serve as a guide, friend, and resurce wh shares yur experiences, knwledge, and expertise t help pave the way fr students t succeed at UVU and beynd. The Center fr the Advancement f Leadership uses the fllwing as guidelines t define a gd mentring relatinship: 1) Reciprcity The equal engagement f the mentr and mentee. Mentr and mentee each have a rle t play and a respnsibility t the relatinship. Each ne has much t gain frm the relatinship (Fischler, Lry A., and Lis J. Zachary. Shifting Gears: The Mentee in the Driver s Seat Adult Learning , 2009.) 2) Learning Learning is the purpse, the prcess, and the prduct f a mentring relatinship (Zachary, 2005). Even if the relatinship itself is gd, withut the presence f learning, there is n mentring. By learning we mean mre than simply acquiring knwledge The learning that ges n in a mentring relatinship is active learning (Dalz, 1986). The mentee gains expanded perspectives; knwledge abut the ins and uts f the rganizatin, field, r prfessin; an understanding f what wrks and what desn t wrk; and, mst imprtantly, a deepened self-knwledge and understanding. (Fischler, Lry A., and Lis J. Zachary. Shifting Gears: The Mentee in the Driver s Seat Adult Learning , 2009.) 3) Relatinship Wrking n and in a relatinship is critical t effective mentring. (Fischler, Lry A., and Lis J. Zachary. Shifting Gears: The Mentee in the Driver s Seat Adult Learning , 2009.) 4) Partnership The mentee plays a much mre active rles in the learning than in the traditinal mentr-driven paradigm The mentr s rle has changed frm the sage n the stage t the guide n the side (Zachary, 2000) the mentr is less f an authrity figure and mre fully engaged in the learning relatinship. 8
9 5) Cllabratin Mentr and mentee engage in sharing knwledge, learning, and building cnsensus and, in the prcess, mutually determine the nature and terms f the cllabratin This give and take cntributes t creating shared meaning and smething greater merges because f it. (Fischler, Lry A., and Lis J. Zachary. Shifting Gears: The Mentee in the Driver s Seat Adult Learning , 2009.) 6) Mutually Defined Gals Clarifying, articulating, and mnitring learning gals are critical t achieving a satisfactry mentring utcme. It is hard t achieve a gal when it has nt been clearly defined. Mentring partners must cntinuusly revisit their learning gals thrughut the mentring relatinship t keep in n track. Withut well-defined gals, the relatinship runs the risk f lsing its fcus. (Fischler, Lry A., and Lis J. Zachary. Shifting Gears: The Mentee in the Driver s Seat Adult Learning , 2009.) 7) Develpment A mentring relatinship is future-directed, mving frm where the mentee is t where the mentee wants t be by develping the skills, knwledge, abilities, and thinking t get there. (Fischler, Lry A., and Lis J. Zachary. Shifting Gears: The Mentee in the Driver s Seat Adult Learning , 2009.) 8) Mentr Sessins Fcus n Persnal Develpment Tpics When a mentr fcuses n a student s persnal develpment, mentr sessins becme mre effective and the student is mre likely t be pen t new experiences, t appreciate diversity, t be a rle mdel, r t live up t their ptential (Campbell, Dugan, Kmives, & Smith, 2012,p.619). 9
10 Benefits f Mentring Mentee Benefits Openness t new experiences Gained appreciatin fr diversity Cnnectin between cursewrk and applicatin Mre likely t live up t their ptential Expanded netwrks Mentr Benefits Meaningful cnnectins Share yur expertise Influence, mtivatin, encuragement Refine caching and mentring skills Expand yur prfessinal netwrks 10
