1 Sacred Heart School Spring Session 2017 After School Classes You will be registered for the class and will hear back from the financial aid committee by April 5, Sacred Heart is open after school for all sorts of fun, academic and personal enrichment. This spring we will spend our 12th year offering a special after school program called "Sports, Sports, Sports devoted only to sports and dance. Enrollment & Registration Registration runs March 13 April 3. To register for class, click here. First time users will need to setup an account. Payment must be made at the time of registration in order to reserve space in the class. (The one exception would be anyone requesting financial aid. see note below) Classes will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. You will receive an automated confirmation of your registered Classes. If you do not receive a confirmation that you are registered, you should return to your login page and check your registration information. Remember, you are registered only if you receive confirmation (via ) of your class schedule. We will contact you only if a class is cancelled due to low enrollment. NOTE: If you received financial aid toward tuition for the school year, you are eligible to apply for financial aid for one (1) specialized after school class. The deadline to apply for this financial aid is April 3, To apply for financial aid; you must register for the class first. During the online registration process, choose the desired class and check the box indicated to apply for Specialized After School Program Financial Aid. The box must be checked in order to apply. On the check out page please select Pay the Minimum Amount Due. All After School classes must be paid for by April 24, The amount of financial aid awarded for one (1) specialized after school class will be based on the percentage of aid a student receives for tuition, available aid, and the demand for classes. Payment Policies Payment by credit card will be accepted. Upon receipt of payment, a confirmation of your registration will be ed to you. Scheduling Classes run April 24 - May 19 Please check individual class descriptions for the schedule of start and end dates for each class. Cancellations & Refunds Classes may be cancelled if they do not meet minimum enrollment. If a class is cancelled by the After School Office, you will be notified by and issued a refund. You will not receive a refund if your child is absent or stops attending a class. Core After School Program Stay until 6:00 p.m. After School Classes are offered in addition to the Core After school Program. Your child/children is/are welcome to stay at school after their class in the Core After School Program. Pickup must take place by 6:00 p.m. through the Portry. If your child s class does not start until after 4:00 they will stay in the Core Program until their class meets. 2 Snacks A healthy snack will be provided to every child participating in an After School Class. The cost of the snack is included in the class fee. Dismissal/Pick Up Children enrolled in After School Classes will report to the Core After School Program at dismissal. Their After School Class teacher will pick them up when it is time for class. Children will be dismissed by After School staff at the Rosemont door at the class-end time indicated on the schedule. Students whose parents do not pick them up within 10 minutes of cla2ss end-time will join the Core Program and must then be picked up through the Portry. Behavior Policy Sacred Heart Schools recognize the development of character as a fundamental goal in education. Discipline at the Schools is rooted in the values inherent in the Goals and Criteria. All students who attend After School are required to abide by all the rules, policies and procedures that are outlined in the current Parent-Student Handbook. The discipline policy of the Schools will be reinforced and deemed appropriate, including, when necessary, suspension and expulsion from the After School program. Note: All Classes are Co-Ed unless stated otherwise MONDAY CLASSES Intro to Tennis Teacher: Frank Sacks, Owner, Midwest Tennis Program Age: 1 st, 2 nd & 3 rd Grades Dates: Mondays, April 24 - May 15 (4 weeks) Time: 3:45 5 p.m. + $23 materials fee = $131 Minimum Enrollment: 4; Maximum Enrollment: 20 The founder of the Midwest Programs (MWTP) has conducted tennis programs in the Chicago area for over 33 years. This program is designed to help develop proper tennis skills, while increasing self confidence. With the countless number of starts, stops, changes of direction and hitting on the run, you will gain a dynamic balance of speed and agility. The materials fee covers the cost of the tennis racquet that students will use during the class and take home at the end of the session. Intro to Basketball Teachers: Sacred Heart Basketball Coaches Age: 1 st, 2 nd & 3 rd Grades Dates: Mondays, April 24 - May 15 (4 weeks) In this class you will be introduced to the fundamentals of basketball by developing skills and focusing on dribbling & passing. Each class will include a variety of individual and team drills. You will also be introduced to games that will help to develop hand-eye coordination, dexterity, fitness, balance, and strategy skills for budding athletes of all skill levels. Page 2

3 TUESDAY CLASSES Ninja Warriors Teacher: Alexa Feiereisel, Kindergarten Teaching Assistant Age: K, 1 st & 2 nd Grades Dates: Tuesdays, April 25 - May 16 (4 weeks) Time: 3:30 4:15 p.m. Minimum Enrollment: 5; Maximum Enrollment: 20 In this class we will work on improving strength and agility that will allow the children to complete obstacle courses, balancing activities, and mazes! Grab a friend and join the fun! Volleyball Skills and Drills Teachers: Sacred Heart Volleyball Coaches Age: 3 rd, 4 th, & 5 th Grades Dates: Tuesdays, April 25 May 16 (4 weeks) Bump, Set and Spike your way to fun! Learn the great game of volleyball! You will learn correct passing and serving techniques, game rotations and scoring rules. Athletes need to bring knee pads to every class. WEDNESDAY CLASSES Scooter Mania Teacher: Paula Fusco, Enrichment Coordinator Age: Kindergarten, 1 st, 2 nd & 3 rd Grades Dates: Tuesdays, April 25 May 16 (4 weeks) Time: 345-4:45 p.m. Minimum Enrollment: 4; Maximum Enrollment: 20 Come join Ms. Fusco for an hour of scooter fun! Have a blast playing action packed games such as Scooter Scoopball, Scooter Pick Up, and Scooter Scramble with your friends! Yoga Teacher: Katherine Gates, Teaching Assistant and Certified Yoga Instructor Age: K - 3rd Grades Dates: Wednesdays, April 26 - May 17 (4 weeks) + $5 = $113 Minimum Enrollment: 5; Maximum Enrollment: 15 Yoga not only improves physical fitness balance, flexibility and strength but also, yoga teaches children mindfulness skills to manage emotions, solve problems, take care of their own bodies, and work with others. Each class we will move our bodies in a Vinyasa Yoga flow then enjoy a snack while reading a Yoga-themed book. All materials are provided, including a healthy snack! 4 Olympic Games Teacher: Stephanie Combs, Teaching Assistant Age: K - 4 th Grades Dates: Wednesdays, April 26 - May 17 (4 weeks) The flames are lit and the games are about to begin! Test your strength and endurance in this season s Olympic Games! A variety of relay races, obstacle courses, and physical skill-based games will challenge you to go for the gold! Wrestling Teacher: Bart Huff, SHS Parent Age: 1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd, & 4 th Grades Boys Only Dates: Wednesdays, April 26 May 17 (4 weeks) Minimum Enrollment: 4; Maximum Enrollment: 10 Students will begin by warming up and participating in group drills learning basic techniques, including take-downs, escapes and pinning combinations. The students will then split into age/weight appropriate groups for sparring matches. ** Interested middle school boys are encouraged to register** Floor Hockey Teacher: Holly DePalma, Kindergarten Teacher Age: 2 nd, 3 rd, 4 th & 5 th Grades Dates: Wednesdays, April 26 May 17 (4 weeks) + $10 = $118 Participants will play a game every week! They will have a blast learning the fundamentals, building teamwork, developing sportsmanship, and competing. Are you ready to have some fun? Participants should bring their gym shoes and shin guards to every class. THURSDAY CLASSES Note: Piano Lessons End May 11 Miniature Golf Teacher: Diana Cortez, Primary School Art Teacher Age: K, 1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd & 4 th Grades Dates: Thursdays, April 27 May 18 (4 weeks) Times: 3:45 5:00 p.m. + $15 material fee = $123 Join Mrs. Cortez and friends for fun afternoons of playing miniature golf. Learn to be part of a team and learn the basics of golf. Students will be using indoor green areas, balls, a club, obstacles and putters! Page 4

5 Dancing through Life! Teacher: Marie Regala, Teaching Assistant Age: 1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd, 4 th, & 5 th Grades Dates: Thursdays, April 27 May 18 (4 weeks) Times: 3:45 4:30 p.m. Who doesn t love to get their groove on? Throughout the four weeks, participants will learn different dance combinations to songs of their choosing. The dance combinations could vary from musical theatre to hip-hop, but no matter what the end goal is to dance, dance, dance. This class is great for those who have a dance background and want to practice learning combinations in a short time period, but it s also for anyone who wants to have fun moving and grooving! All you have to be is ready to DANCE THROUGH LIFE Basketball Fundamentals Teachers: Sacred Heart Basketball Coaches Age: 5 th & 6 th Grades Dates: Thursdays, April 27 May 18 (4 weeks) Love basketball and interested in sharpening your skills? Join SHS Basketball Coaches for an hour of fundamental skill development focusing specifically on form shooting and ball handling. Each class will include a variety of individual and team drills as well as scrimmages. Intro to LaCrosse Teacher: Hollis Babbles, MS Humanities Teacher Age: 3 rd, 4 th, & 5 th Grades Dates: Thursdays, April 27 May 18 (4 weeks) + $10 materials fee - $118 Introduction to lacrosse is for the beginner player. The focus of this course is to have fun in a non-completive atmosphere. Players will work on the fundamentals of the game of lacrosse. Emphasis will be placed on the basic skills: Learning to pass, catch, scoop, cradling, and shooting. Gym shoes and comfortable clothing is preferred. Piano Lessons Teacher: Camille Witos Age: K - 6 th Grades Dates: Thursdays, April 27 May 11 (3 weeks) Time: (30 / 45 minute lessons ) Lessons are offered from 3:30-6:00pm Fee: 30 minutes - $152 / 45 minutes - $213 Important: Please arrange time with teacher before registering for class by contacting: cwitos@msn.com A Chicago native, Camille Witos is an active chamber musician and teacher. Ms. Witos has taught for many years in Chicago and on the North Shore. She is on the faculty of the Music Institute of Chicago, has been a faculty member at the DePaul University Community Music School, and has taught in London, England. She has written articles for Keyboard Companion magazine and frequently serves as an adjudicator for contests in the Chicago area.the Suzuki method is by far the most effective approach for nurturing and developing the musical ability of a child from a very young age. Based on Suzuki's "mother language" philosophy, very young children learn to play the piano through their senses after listening to recordings and observing how other children learn. A cooperative relationship between teacher, parent and student is essential for a successful learning process. A parent is expected to be present at the child's lesson and receive training as a practice partner to the child Page 5

6 FRIDAY CLASSES Note: Piano Lessons End May 12 Mission Teamwork Teacher: Jonathan Stopyra, SHS Substitute Teacher Age: K 2 nd Grades Dates: Fridays, April 28 - May 19 (4 weeks) Time: 2:45 3:45 p.m. + $8 materials fee = $116 In this high-energy class, students will be given missions that they finish together through a series of games and physical challenges. The focus will be on teamwork and friendship, as opposed to being competitive. Each week will feature a different mission, with different games and fun activities needed to finish it successfully. By engaging in high-energy play and imagination, students will work together to complete their missions and practice important social-emotional skills such as teamwork, problem solving and determination. Intro to Taekwondo Teacher: Blair Sarkiss, 4th Degree Black Belt, Owner and Lead Instructor, HMD Academy COED Age: K - 6 th Grades (Ages 7 and up) Dates: Fridays, April 28 - May 19 (4 weeks) Time: 2:45 3:45p.m. + $35 uniform fee = $143 Minimum Enrollment: 7; Maximum Enrollment: 20 This four week session is open to new and returning students. The curriculum focuses on personal achievement without competition, and importance is placed on students effort not their ability. In addition to learning the physical skills of Tae Kwon Do, students will learn martial arts etiquette, rules, and regulations (discipline), Korean terminology, and visualization. Classroom achievements, both physically and mentally, help students form a positive self-image (self-esteem) while training in a structured and positive atmosphere, devoid of the fear of losing allows the development of assertiveness, not aggression. Students will develop their soccer skills with training and activities. We will warm up to improve our abilities and play a soccer game each time we meet. Page 6
