LEE COUNTY EMS TRAINING Memo To: EMS ALL From: Scott M. Tuttle, Deputy Chief Training Manager Date: 2/8/2007 Re: HealthStream We have moved to a new online CEU provider. The new company is HealthStream. Each employee at Lee County EMS has a subscription that allows unlimited use of all the classes offered through HeathStream s EMS module. The link to log on to HealthStream is A direct link is also provided on the employee intranet. 1

Your user ID and password is your address up to sign. Example, joemedic@leegov.com would be joemedic for the user ID and joemedic for the password. After you log on, you will be asked a one time question if you are an MD/DO or other licensed healthcare provider, select I am a non-physician, licensed healthcare professional (Nurse, Pharmacist, Physical Therapist, etc.) and choose save. Page 2

You will then be prompted to enter additional information about your state EMT or Paramedic certificate. It is VERY IMPORTANT to do this accurately and correctly. HealthStream automatically reports the CEUs you earn to the state offices. Should you be audited for CEUs by the state of Florida, they will first check your HealthStream records. Many audits go no further after compliance is confirmed with the HealthStream training records. This is the last time you will see this screen. Each subsequent log on will take you to the following screen. Page 3

This section shows any courses that may have been assigned by the Training Department at LCEMS or any classes you have started but not completed. To find a new class to take, select the find tab. See screen shot below. Page 4

Now click on the Emergency Medical Services link for more choices. This is where you will find all the different categories a class may be listed. In the two screen shots below, the Emergency Medical Services link has been selected and from that link Airway Management and Ventilation has been selected to show the choices of classes within the Airway Management and Ventilation category. Page 5

Page 6

Feel free to start using HealthStream as soon as possible. As in the past, DO NOT rely on in-services to provide the necessary CEUs for you to recertify you EMT or Paramedic Certificate. On the employee intranet is complete users manual. If the manual does not answer your questions, please contact Deputy Chief Scott Tuttle. Page 7

HealthStream Learning Center (HLC) Overview of the HealthStream Learning Center The HealthStream Learning Center (also called the HLC) is an electronic learning system designed to streamline your education experience. You ll be able to complete your assignments and electives when it fits your schedule. And since the HLC is securely delivered via the Internet, it offers flexibility in where you participate in your e-learning exercises and access your transcript. After you log into the Healthcare Learning Center as a student you will be able to: Complete online courses and tests Enroll in classroom-based courses View your transcripts (document of your completed courses) Print a certificate for your completed online courses Review assigned classroom course details Browse and enroll in elective courses Maintain your licensure information (if applicable) Learn about selected medical devices (if available through your facility) Student (Employee) Responsibilities As an HLC student, you will be responsible for logging into the system on a regular basis (i.e., once a month) and taking courses in compliance with your facility s education requirements. This Student Guide will help you understand how to use the HLC and its student features. You can read through this guide online, or print off a hardcopy for your reference. Note: HealthStream updates this document periodically. Be sure you are referencing the most recent version (especially if using hardcopy) by checking the date on your copy against the date at the bottom left-hand corner of the online version. If you learn better by watching and listening, click the Show Me How icon after you log into the HLC (see Figure 1). The Show Me How online student tutorial will cover all the key topics of the HLC, complete with animated graphics and spoken instructions. This tutorial is available from any screen inside the HLC, and is broken into several modules so that you can review the specific functions for which you have questions at any time. The entire Show Me How tutorial (all modules) runs approximately 12 minutes. You can stop, move forward, reverse or restart as you choose. Figure 1 January

Getting Started The HLC works like just like a secure website. You ll begin by starting the Internet Explorer web browser, which has the big blue icon on your PC. Note: the HLC presently does not support Mac or Linux computers or other web browsers such as Firefox, Safari, or the AOL browser. 1. Open the Internet Explorer and type the web address (also called a URL) provided by your System Administrator (for example: Note: You can connect to the web using AOL and then use Internet Explorer, but you cannot use the web browser built into AOL. Or, 2. You may have an HLC icon on your PC desktop. If so, double-click on the HLC icon. The Student login page appears as shown in Figure 2. Figure 2 Your login page may look slightly different depending on the instructions your System Administrator has chosen to provide here. 3. Type in your User ID and Password (provided by your System Administrator). If you have forgotten your password, enter your User ID and click Password Reminder. If you have forgotten your User ID, contact your facility s HealthStream System Administrator. January

Figure 21 Note: The Customer Care link directs you to your System Administrator. Click that link if you are having problems or need additional assistance. Checking Your System Configuration If you are having trouble using the HLC, you can check your system configuration and inform your Help Desk or IT support staff of any problems that are identified. To check your system configuration, click the Run Test Now link. Taking an Online Course To take an online course: 1. Go to My Account/My Courses. 2. Click the name link of the course you wish to take. HealthStream regulatory courses are delivered as either PA (pre-assessment) or non-pa (no preassessment) versions. Your System Administrator will determine which version you are to take of each assigned regulatory course. For example you may be assigned the Fire Safety course, or the Fire Safety PA. See further information below - Pre and Post-Assessment Exams. PA courses include a pre-assessment exam. If you pass the pre-assessment exam by meeting or exceeding the minimum passing score, you will not be January

required to complete the course content. By clicking the name link of a PA course, the Course Activity window appears as shown in Figure 22. Note: The only live link is the link that launches the PA exam. Click the Pre- Assessment link to launch the PA exam. Figure 22 Non-PA courses do not include a pre-assessment exam. They require that you complete the course content and then pass a post-assessment exam to receive credit. When you click the name link of a non-pa course, the only available link is the link into the course content. Note: The link to the postassessment exam will not be live until you have gone through all lesson screens in the course content. An HLC course will open a background screen and then a pop-up window in which the lesson appears. Both windows must remain open for you to view the course. Lessons begin with audio voiceover. You may click the Mute button to turn sound off, as the voiceover is the same as the text you can read on the screen. Some courses may include Annotations, which are electronic messages your System Administrator has added to the course. A sample annotation is shown in Figure 23. Read the information in the annotation, and then click return to lesson. For additional assistance in learning how to navigate through an online course, go to the Main Menu of the course and click on the Getting Started button. This will open another window in which a demonstration will play (including audio voiceover) that shows you how to complete an online course. January

Figure Continue through each screen of the course. You can choose the order you wish to view the lessons, but you must view each screen of each lesson, including the Introduction lesson. 4. If you wish to exit a course prior to completing the content, DO NOT click the X in the upper right-hand corner of your screen. Instead, click Exit at the bottom right of the course navigation window. See Figure 24. This bookmarks your place in the course. Figure When you return to the course at a later time (by clicking the course name link on your My Courses page), you will have the option of going directly to the last visited page, as shown on Figure 25. January

Figure After completing all course lessons, the Exam link becomes available. Click that link to take the post-assessment exam. See Figure 26. Figure 26 Pre- and Post-Assessment Exams Some online courses include pre- and/or post-assessment exams, as described above. You will have only one opportunity to pass a pre-assessment exam. If you do not meet the minimum passing score on the first try, you will be required to go through the course content and take the post-assessment exam. You can take a post-assessment exam as many times as necessary to successfully pass the exam. Note: You must complete exams in one sitting. If you leave your computer, the system will time out, and unanswered questions will be scored as incorrect. To take a pre- or post-assessment exam: 1. Click the Exam link. The examination page will launch as shown in Figure 27. January

Figure Click the radio button next to your selected answer. 3. Click Next to continue through the exam. 4. After you have answered all the questions, click Click Here to Score Your Exam. The exam will be scored by the system and you will receive immediate feedback as shown in Figure 28. January

Figure If you passed the exam, you will see the You Must Click Here to Receive Credit link. You MUST click this link to receive credit for passing the exam and completing the course. You will also see a listing of the exam questions, along with your selected answer, the correct answer and rationale for the correct response. 6. If you fail the exam, you will see the Click Here to View Lessons link to view/review the course content. Again, you will see a listing of exam questions, your selected answer, the correct answer and rationale for the correct response. 7. If you pass a pre-assessment or post-assessment exam and click the link to receive credit, course completion will be noted on the My Transcript page. Logging Out Always click on the Logout button when exiting the system to be sure all work is correctly updated in your HLC account. DO NOT exit using the X in the upper righthand corner of your screen. See Figure 29. Figure 29 January
