1 Diversity Lesson Plan Purpose: It is important for students to be aware that we are living in a country that make up of different people from all over the world. This means that we are a very diverse country. Diversity the condition of having or being composed of differing elements: variety; especially: the inclusion of different types of people (as people of different races or cultures) in a group or organization (merriam-webster.com). Learning other language is the best way to get to know other culture The student will recognize that Americans are ma people of diverse ethnic origins, customs, and traditions, who are united by the basic principles of a republican form of government and respect for individual rights and freedoms. Objectives: Providing the worksheet, students will be able to fill the blank of their name, Hello in a different language other than English, and the country or a group that associate with that language. Introduction Haw Luh A Ghay class. It means good morning/hello in my language. Boys and girls, Mrs. Primus talked about the word diversity a few weeks ago. We can be diverse in a lot of ways. One of the ways we are diverse is the language we are speaking. Language is a part of one s culture. Most American speaks English but not all. Some American, English is their second language. It is important to be respectful of other language and use it when it is appropriate. Today, our goal is to learn to say hello in different languages. I am going to read a book called Hello World; greeting in 42 languages Around the Globe. Then, I will show a YouTube video of people around the globe say Hello. (Already have link.

2 Development (Game time), Boys and Girls, Each student will get an index card with a world that say Hello and the country of the language beside it. (see material section for example). Since my students desks are in U shape, I will have students to remain in their seat. I will hand a card to a student who sit at the one ends of the desk. I will say the language in the card to that students. Then, that student will pass the card to the next students beside him/her and repeat what I say. For example, I will give a card to Billy and say Hola! It means hello in Spanish. Then, Billy will give the card next to him and repeat what I say. We will do this until the last card are throw and get back to me. Summary Now, raise your hand and tell me what other language you learn today? So, now, you can go to the other countries and able to greet people there. If your neighbor does not speak English, asked them what they speak and ask them how to say hello in their native language. For example, if you have neighbors that from Thailand, you now know how to say hello in Thai. When you speak to someone in their native language, it is very special to that person, it the magic word. It is important and cool that we have people from all over the world in American. We don t have to go another country to speak Thai or French. 3 Evaluation Part A: Students assessments. Students will be provided with a name card. They will be filled out their name card with their name and Hello in a language that is not English and the country or group that associate with the language.

4 Diversity Lesson Reflection It was not bad at all, teaching a lesson to the whole class. Everything went as I plan. I even communicated with my practicum teacher, Mrs.Primus, the day before I actually teach my diversity lesson to make sure she did not have anything going on. After the morning journal, the whole class took a bathroom break. While the whole class went to the bathroom, I stayed behind to set up my teaching moment. I placed everything in order and ready to go. I had my book pages marked the day before and rechecking to see if anything missing. I place my diversity lesson plan where I can see it so that I stay on track. I also opened up everything on the computer screen that I need while keeping the projector cap close. I feel like I was over prepare and a little nervous at the same time. Students came back from the bathroom and they were so curious when they see me one hundred percent ready to go. When all students seated, I said GHaw Lu A Ghay. Everyone was quite for a second. Then, I said, It is hello/ good morning in my native language, do you remember I say it the beginning of the years? After that, I told my students the important to speak in different languages. I gave a scenario of If a new student walked in our classroom right now and does not speak English and only speak Arabic, who knows how to say HELLO in Arabic? Many students shout out I know how to say hello in Spanish, French. Then, I read the book, Hello World!, Greeting in 42 Languages Around the Globe! by Manya Stojic. I only picked out twenty-one language because there were twenty-one students and forty-two languages are too many. Then, I had my students watch a YouTube video where people from around the world say hello in their native language. The YouTube link from the PowerPoint did not work, so I had to find it on YouTube while had the projector cap closed. After that, I handed out a hello card to a student. I asked then to practice their hello card to the

5 person next to then. I have then two minutes and then I had the students switch the card clockwise since the classroom is in U-shape. The switching did not go smooth because some students like the language they have and don t want to switch it. The switching took a long time before it makes a complete U-shape. After a few switches, I handed out the assessment sheet. Students were asked to choose the language that they like and completed the worksheet. The students loved it. Some of the students wanted to fill out two sheets because they know how to say hello in many languages and can t choose one. I collected all students works afterward. Teaching to the whole class is a different experience compare to working in group or one-on-one. It felt similar to being there part of the day compare to being there the whole day. I got the whole pictures of what is like when I spend the whole day at my practicum class. Sitting in the back of the classroom offered only a scope of views to students. When I was in the front of the class, I felt that I connect more with students because their eyes are on me. My practicum teacher, Mrs. Primus, wrote me a very informative feedback on my glows and grows sheet. She noticed all the parts I wished her notice. I had all my materials in place and order. My visual support on the projector screen and engaging with students was all planned. For grows, re-focusing students after activities will improve in time. This was one of my weak points. It s so accurate that I felt that was the week part of my lesson and she noticed it, too. I did facing the challenge of getting the students attentions back to me; maybe students really engaged in it. An overall, my diversity lesson was a success. The students meet the objective because I had analyzed their work. My diversity lesson plan was universal regarding struggler students. All students have joyfully participated in my diversity lesson. Students who had questions, I was right there to assist them. My strength was being prepared and high level of students

6 engagements. If I had to teach my lesson again, I would time myself and organized the time structure smoothly. The experiences I got from this assignment strengthen my confidence as a professional classroom teacher. Students understood me, they liked me and vice versa. When I have a classroom of my own, I know I will be fully ready and above and beyond prepared.
