Office Hours: 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. MW or by appointment Catalog Description: Basic skills and techniques required to produce construction documents conforming to current building codes and standards, including working drawing, specifications, bid documents, addenda and change orders. Course Corequisite: CMT 210L & BLAW 280 Outcomes The outcomes of this course are: utilizing modern instruments, methods and techniques to implement construction contracts, documents, and codes; evaluating materials and methods for construction projects; employing productivity software to solve technical problems; producing and utilizing design, construction, and operational documents; applying principles of construction law and ethics; performing standard analysis and design in at least one recognized technical specialty within construction engineering technology that is appropriate to the goals of the program. Text Hinze, J. (2001). Construction Contracts. 2nd edition, McGraw-Hill Science/ Engineering/ Math. References AIA (2001). The Architect s Handbook of Professional Practice. John Wiley & Sons Lab Lab will be mainly online instruction for Construction Safety from Turner University. The course will cover 30-HR OSHA training (24 online and 6 class hours). Students will take OSHA test. Students will receive OSHA certificate after passing the test.

2 Grade Distribution Quizzes = 20% Assignments = 20% Exams (2@20%) = 40% Final Exam = 20 % Grading Scale A 90% - 100% B 80% - 89% C 70% - 79% D 60% - 69% F Below 60% +/- grades will be considered General Policies - Attendance at all classes is expected. For known absences, students should make prior arrangements with the instructor to make up quizzes or tests. Exam Policies: Anticipated exam time frame is specified below. If any of these dates represent a conflict, please notify the instructor for possible changes of exam dates. Quizzes are usually unannounced. Make-up tests and quizzes will be allowed for only exceptional circumstances and proven medical emergencies. Intermediate exams are not comprehensive. However, the final exam is comprehensive with emphasis on the latest material covered. Assignment Policies: Consultation with other students for solving assignments is acceptable. But each student must report his/her work independently. All identical assignments may receive a score of zero on that assignment. Assignments are due by class time. one week from the date they are assigned Late assignments will receive point deduction at the rate of 10% per day. No assignment will be accepted after graded assignments are returned except for proven medical emergencies. Most exam problems will be similar to assignment problems. Therefore, solving assignments is a key in being successful in exams. 4 Course Objectives: 1. Provide students with fundamental knowledge on construction contracts and the roles and responsibilities of parties. 2. A review of the regulatory environment, licensing and permitting requirements 3. An overview of lien law and contractor rights 4. Administrative procedures to avoid disputes and dispute resolution options 5. Ethical practices in contracts and contracting Grading: The grades will be based on Exams: 3 equally weighted exams 80% Papers: 2 equally weighted papers 10% Unannounced quizzes: 10% Grading: 90% = A; 80%=B; 70%=C; 60%=D; Less than 60%=F Classroom Policies a. Attendance: You are expected to attend class sessions and participate in class discussions. If missing class is unavoidable, you are responsible for learning the material covered, obtaining copies of any handouts, and all assignments given. Any assignments, due the day of the absence, shall be turned in prior to your absence. b. Homework: Papers turned in late will receive a maximum of 50%. Papers will not be accepted more than 5 calendar days after the due date. c. Make up quizzes: No makeup quizzes will be given. The lowest of either one paper or one quiz will not be counted. d. Make up exams: Make up exams will be allowed only in exceptional cases or emergencies with prior approval.
