1 Legacy High School A Global Studies School Course Expectations Algebra II Instructor: Mr. Harold Casaclang LHS Room: 817 Phone: (702) Voice Mail: hccasaclang@interact.ccsd.net Website Address: Course Scope: This one-year course provides students with a rigorous study of functions and statistics, including advanced topics. It incorporates problem solving, reasoning, modeling, and effective communication skills through the study of polynomial, rational, radical, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions; the design of statistical studies; and statistical inference. Instructional practices incorporate integration of diversity awareness including appreciation of all cultures and their important contributions to society. The use of mathematical tools and technology, including calculators and computer software, is an integral part of this course. This course will fulfill one of the mathematics credits required for high school graduation. Course Goals: 1. To develop the Standards for Mathematical Practice. [CCSS] 2. To perform arithmetic operations with complex numbers and use complex numbers in polynomial identities and equations. [CCSS: N.CN] 3. To interpret the structure of expressions and write expressions in equivalent forms to solve problems. [CCSS: A.SSE] 4. To perform arithmetic operations on polynomials; understand the relationship between zeros and factors of polynomials; use polynomial identities to solve problems; and rewrite rational expressions. 2 6. To understand solving equations as a process of reasoning and explain the reasoning; and represent and solve equations and inequalities graphically. [CCSS: A.REI] 7. To interpret functions that arise in applications in terms of the context and analyze functions using different representations. [CCSS: F.IF] 8. To build a function that models a relationship between two quantities and build new functions from existing functions. [CCSS: F.BF] 9. To construct and compare linear, quadratic, and exponential models and solve problems. [CCSS: F.LE] 10. To extend the domain of trigonometric functions using the unit circle; model periodic phenomena with trigonometric functions; and prove and apply trigonometric identities. [CCSS: F.TF] 11. To summarize, represent, and interpret data on a single count or measurement variable. [CCSS: S.ID] 12. To understand and evaluate random processes underlying statistical experiments; and make inferences and justify conclusions from sample surveys, experiments and observational studies. [CCSS: S.IC] 13. To use probability to evaluate outcomes of decisions. [CCSS: S.MD] Textbooks The following text(s) will be utilized in this course: Title: Algebra 2 Authors: Larson, Boswell, Kanold, Stiff Publisher: McDougal Littell Edition: 2004 Student Supplies Tardy Policy Students are expected to have and maintain the following supplies all year: Notebook Pencils and pencil eraser Pens black or blue Loose Leaves Tardiness to class is not acceptable. Students arriving to a class after the tardy bell has rung will receive consequences aligned with the Legacy High School Tardy Policy. A student who is more than 30 minutes late to class will be counted absent from that class. Classrooms will be locked when the tardy bell rings. Teachers will Legacy High School Page: 2

3 issue a tardy if a student is late to class. They will mark tardy in Infinite Campus. 1 st tardy = Verbal Warning, student initials on tardy slip. 2 nd tardy = Verbal Warning, student initials on tardy slip. 3 rd tardy = Call parent, student initials on tardy slip. 4 th tardy = Detention, student initials on tardy slip. 5 th and additional tardies = Referral to the deans office with documentation of progression *Random tardy lock-out sweeps will be conducted. Students out of class without a pass will be issued an RPC. Grading Policy Grading Scale: Grades will be rounded to nearest whole number. (79.6%=80%) o 90% - 100% A o 80% - 89% B o 70% - 79% C o 60% - 69% D o Below 60% F Semester Grading Scale: o 45% Quarter 1/3 Grade o 45% Quarter 2/4 Grade o 10% Semester Examination Quarterly Grading Scale: o 50% Tests ( Chapter tests, quizzes) o 30% Homework o 20% Seatwork/Classwork o The total number of points YOU earn per quarter determines YOUR grade. Notebooks: o Notebooks must be organized. Using Cornell Notes is recommended. o All notes should be dated. o There will be notebook check at the end of each unit. o You are responsible for including notes and assignments for the days that you are absent. 4 Make-up Work, Late Work, and Attendance Make-up Work: o Must be obtained within three days of an absence. o If you miss a chapter test, quiz or notebook check, you must arrange a time outside of class to make it up. You have until the next chapter test is given. This is in accordance to the Clark County School District Policy. Late Work: o Will only be accepted for 3 days after the absence Absence: o Students are responsible for getting make-up work. You need to check the make-up area for your class. o Students are responsible for getting notes for absent days. o Students are responsible for scheduling after school to make-up tests and quizzes. You have until the next chapter test is given. Hours of Availability: o I am available for extra help before or after school. o Please give an advanced notice if you would like to meet with me for special assistance. o If my presence is required by administration or parent conference, then I will post a notice on my door. I will try to return to my classroom in a timely manner. Attendance After the seventh unexcused absence, students will be denied credit and will receive an F for the course. For assistance in improving student math ability, check out the following website: Classroom Behavior Expectations CLASSROOM RULES: Mutual Courtesy/Mutual Respect I have the right to teach, and students have the right to learn; therefore anything done to interfere with this process will be considered a discipline problem. Classroom Rules: o Come to class on time. Be in your assigned seat and be prepared to work when the bell rings. o Begin the warm up activity within one minute after the bell rings. o Attend to personal needs before coming to class. o Remain in your assigned seat unless you have permission to get up. o Absolutely no food (this includes gum chewing and sunflower seeds), drink, headgear, personal grooming, cell phone, and electronic devices in the classroom. o Water in a spill proof container is the only food or drink allowed in class. (If any other food or drink is brought into the classroom, you will be Legacy High School Page: 4

5 instructed to dispose of it in the trash bins.) o Bring required materials every day unless you are otherwise directed. o No arguing in class. Concerns or appeals must be discussed with the teacher privately before or after the class. o Raise your hand and wait to be recognized before speaking. o Heads must remain off the desks at all times. o When the teacher is talking, you should be quiet and attentive. o Be an active listener. Try to take notes on model problems as we go over them and on everything else that may be of use later. Ask pertinent questions right away. o If you become ill and must leave the room quickly, please try to alert me or a friend to let me know what is happening. o At the end of the period, remain in your seat until you are dismissed. The bell does not dismiss the class. You do not dismiss the class. I dismiss the class. o Treat each other the same way you would treat a family member that is with respect, kindness, courtesy, and consideration. Implementation of the Legacy Progressive Discipline Plan Citizenship: Grading scale: Outstanding Satisfactory Needs Improvement Unsatisfactory O S N U Scholastic Dishonesty If there is evidence of any dishonesty (i.e., copying from other students papers during any assignment and/or exam, use of textbook during an exam, talking during an exam, or using unauthorized materials during an exam), the student will not receive credit for the assignment and will receive a dean s referral.
