1 MBA 6001, Organizational Research and Theory Course Syllabus Course Description An examination of organizational theory and managerial concepts of human behavior in organizations. Topics include theoretical and practical application of motivation, leadership, power, and reward systems. Provides a balanced view of the structural and human sides of organization design. Course Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students should be able to: 1. Analyze the effects and applications of various organizational structures and levels of authority on employee motivation, morale, and culture. 2. Compare and contrast the impact of models of leadership and their impact on decision making and change within the organizational structure. 3. Identify sources and effects of power on the organizational structure and within the realm of conflict management. 4. Examine the relationship between reward systems and organizational goals and productivity. 5. Apply the practices of research and theory to models for organizational change. 6. Distinguish among organizational design models and organizational structures. 7. Evaluate organizational design and strategy within the global operations environment. Credits Upon completion of this course, the students will earn three (3) hours of college credit. Course Structure 1. Unit Learning Outcomes: Each unit contains Learning Outcomes that specify the measurable skills and knowledge students should gain upon completion of the unit. 2. Unit Lesson: Each unit contains a Unit Lesson, which discusses unit material. 3. Reading Assignments: Each unit contains Reading Assignments from one or more chapters from the textbook. 4. Unit Assignments: Students are required to submit for grading Unit Assignments in each unit. Specific information and instructions regarding these assignments are provided below. Grading rubrics are included with each Unit Assignment. Specific information about accessing these rubrics is provided below. 5. Ask the Professor: This communication forum provides you with an opportunity to ask your professor general or course content related questions. 6. Unit Assignments Unit I Case Study Trader Joe s Read and reflect on the case study about Trader Joe s on page 26 of the textbook. Consider Joe Coulombe s approach to organizational design, and analyze the effects and applications of the various organizational structures and levels of authority. Given the benefits and motivations mentioned in the case study, share an analysis of Trader Joe s impact on employee motivation, morale, and organizational culture. Your paper should be at least two pages in length, not including the title page or reference page. You are required to use at least your textbook as source material for your response. All sources used, including the textbook, must be referenced; paraphrased and quoted material must have accompanying citations. Unit II Essay Identify the major stakeholders in your organization (or one with which you are familiar). Analyze the top-management structure (as explained in Chapter 2), investigate and enumerate the code of ethics (written or not written), and explain the ethical stance of all stakeholders involved in the organization. Identify the relationship among any reward systems and organizational goals and what positive or negative effect there is on employee productivity. Cite concepts and ideas from Chapter 2 to compliment your work. Your paper should be at least two pages in length, not including the title page or reference page. You are required to use at least Chapter 2 of your textbook as source material for your response. Unit III Case Study Sony Read and reflect on the case study about Sony on page 119 of the course textbook. Consider the CEO s reorganization. What environmental constructs were involved? Why did the CEO have to adapt, control, and reduce uncertainty? Identify the mechanistic versus organic structures and how contingency theory was or was not applied in this case study. Your paper should be at least two pages in length, not including the title page or reference page. You are required to use at least your textbook as source material for your response. 3 Unit IV Case Study Xerox Read and reflect on the case study involving the CEO of Xerox on page 145 of your textbook. In a two-to-three- page, APA formatted paper, describe the principles of the bureaucratic structure. Explain why flattening hierarchies and empowering teams is a strategy. Analyze what divisional structures are presented (product, geographic, and market). Conclude with your thoughts on how organizational design models and structures impact organizational development. Your paper should be at least two pages in length, not including the title page or reference page. You are required to use at least your textbook as source material for your response. All sources used, including the textbook, must be referenced; paraphrased and quoted material must have accompanying citations. Unit V Essay Organizational Technology Essay Read and reflect on Chapter 9 in the course textbook, and compose a persuasive word essay linking organizational technology, value, and strategy. You may use a real-life organization you have researched (or worked for) in order to illustrate your argument. Cite the textbook and at least one article using the CSU Online Library database to support your paper s main ideas. Use section headers to share your findings, and persuade readers on the following topics: Identify three kinds of technology in an organization. Explain how different types of technology create different competencies. Describe how technology impacts organizational culture. Explain how technology can help organizational effectiveness. Relate how technology can propel an organization s global expansion strategies. You can find an article for this assignment by going to the CSU Online Library, which is found in the left-hand side menu in the Student Portal. Choose a database to search for your article, and then type key words in the database search box to find an article related to your topic. Unit VI Case Study Nike Read the case study, Nike, on pages in your textbook, and compose a persuasive word essay that includes the following: Describe ways that Nike could use at least two change techniques described in Chapter 10 to improve effectiveness. Based on the case study information, explain which stage in the organizational life cycle Nike is experiencing (and NOT experiencing), citing ideas from Chapter 11. Your paper should be words in length, not including the title page or reference page. You are required to cite Chapters 10 and 11 of your textbook and at least one article from the CSU Online Library. 4 Unit VII Case Study How Mattel s Barbie Lost the War against the Bratz Doll Read the case study, How Mattel s Barbie Lost the War against the Bratz Doll, on pages in the course textbook, and compose a persuasive word essay that includes the following: Explain why Mattel s managers were able to slowly change decision making over time and what kinds of cognitive errors contributed. Explain and comment on any factors related to organizational culture and innovation within Mattel s setting that might have influenced the company in a more positive direction. Your paper should be words in length, not including the title page or reference page. You are required to cite Chapters 12 and 13 of your textbook and at least one article from the CSU Online Library. All sources used, including the textbook, must be referenced; paraphrased and quoted material must have accompanying in-text citations in the proper APA format. Unit VIII Case Study Politics at Walt Disney Read the case study, Politics at Walt Disney, on page 414 of the course textbook, and write a word essay with two high-level section headers: 1. Conflict, Politics, and Conflict Resolution (In this section, answer the questions on page 414.) 2. Effects of Power on Organizational Structure (In this section, include discussion that: a. identifies sources and effects of power on organizational structure, and b. recommends how to evaluate organizational design/strategy in a global operations environment.) Your paper should be words in length, not including the title page or reference page. You are required to cite Chapter 14 and various other chapters in your textbook and at least one article from the CSU Online Library. All sources used, including the textbook, must be referenced; paraphrased and quoted material must have accompanying in-text citations in the proper APA format. APA Guidelines CSU requires that students use APA style for papers and projects. Therefore, the APA rules for formatting, quoting, paraphrasing, citing, and listing of sources are to be followed. Students can find CSU s Citation Guide in the mycsu Student Portal by clicking on the Citation Resources link in the Learning Resources area of the mycsu Student Portal. This document includes examples and sample papers and provides information on how to contact the CSU Success Center. Grading Rubrics This course utilizes analytic grading rubrics as tools for your professor in assigning grades for all learning activities. Each rubric serves as a guide that communicates the expectations of the learning activity and describes the criteria for each level of achievement. In addition, a rubric is a reference tool that lists evaluation criteria and can help you organize your efforts to meet the requirements of that learning activity. It is imperative for you to familiarize yourself with these rubrics because these are the primary tools your professor uses for assessing learning activities. Rubric categories include: (1) Assessment (Written Response) and (2) Assignment. However, it is possible that not all of the listed rubric types will be used in a single course (e.g., some courses may not have Assessments). MBA 6001, Organizational Research and Theory 4

5 The Assessment (Written Response) rubric can be found embedded in a link within the directions for each Unit Assessment. However, these rubrics will only be used when written-response questions appear within the Assessment. Each Assignment type (e.g., article critique, case study, research paper) will have its own rubric. The Assignment rubrics are built into Blackboard, allowing students to review them prior to beginning the Assignment and again once the Assignment has been scored. This rubric can be accessed via the Assignment link located within the unit where it is to be submitted. Students may also access the rubric through the course menu by selecting Tools and then My Grades. Again, it is vitally important for you to become familiar with these rubrics because their application to your Assessments and Assignments is the method by which your instructor assigns all grades. Communication Forums These are non-graded discussion forums that allow you to communicate with your professor and other students. Participation in these discussion forums is encouraged, but not required. You can access these forums with the buttons in the Course Menu. Instructions for subscribing/unsubscribing to these forums are provided below. Once you have completed Unit VIII, you MUST unsubscribe from the forum; otherwise, you will continue to receive updates from the forum. You will not be able to unsubscribe after your course end date.
