3 Introduction The purpose of this resource guide is to help you through the following 5 steps in the Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) process: 1. Awareness Understand PLAR and how it relates to the GenEd Themes. 2. Access Determine eligibility and assessment criteria. 3. Advisory Meet with PLAR Administrator to discuss questions, application and fees. 4. Assessment Submit portfolio for evaluation. 5. Achievement Credit recognition granted if assessment is successful. *Please Note: This Resource Guide is for Theme 3 Social and Cultural Understanding (GED0013) PLAR only. 3
4 What is PLAR? PLAR (Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition) is designed for people who have acquired significant knowledge and skills in different learning settings and experiences outside of traditional accredited post-secondary institutions. If you have acquired such skills and knowledge then you have the opportunity to have your learning related to the Gen Ed theme assessed and possibly recognized in the form of academic credit. Other than in formal classroom situations, learning can be gained through: In-formal learning ü Employment experience ü Military training or service ü Volunteer work or community service ü Life, culture, and heritage experience ü Travel and residency ü Teaching in foreign countries ü Hobbies Non-formal learning ü Seminars ü Corporate Training ü Personal and professional development (which has not led to a credit degree, certificate, or diploma) ü Independent study or non-college courses ü Skills training ü Massive Online Open Courses (MOOC s) ü Workshops Benefits of PLAR Accelerate program of study completion. Save time by taking fewer classes. Gain confidence and self-esteem from having your previous accomplishments recognized. Strengthen the links between your formal studies and your work and life experience. May decrease time to graduation. May reduce the cost of education. Offers a reflective learning experience for future success. Depending on the length of your program, there are one or two general education online electives. General Education courses cover areas of general interest and are divided into five themes: Theme 1 Arts in Society Theme 2 - Civic Life Theme 3 - Social and Cultural Understanding Theme 4 - Personal Understanding Theme 5 - Science and Technology Check your program of study to ensure this theme is eligible for PLAR. 4
5 Is This Theme For You? Theme 3: Social and Cultural Understanding (GED0013) Rationale Knowledge of the patterns and precedents of the past provide the means for a person to gain an awareness of his or her place in contemporary culture and society. In addition to this awareness, students will acquire a sense of the main currents of their culture and that of other cultures over an extended period of time in order to link personal history to the broader study of culture. Content Courses in this area are those that deal broadly with major social and cultural themes. These courses may also stress the nature and validity of historical evidence and the variety of historical interpretation of events. Courses will provide the students with a view and understanding of the impact of cultural, social, ethnic or linguistic characteristics. Theme Objectives Identify patterns and precedents of the past that may provide the means for a person to gain an awareness of his or her place in contemporary culture and society Consider the main currents of one s own culture and that of other cultures over an extended period of time in order to link personal history to the broader study of culture. Deal broadly with major social and cultural themes Analyze the nature and validity of historical evidence and the variety of historical interpretation of events Explore the impact of cultural, social, ethnic or linguistic characteristics. In Step 1, you determined which Theme(s) were eligible for PLAR based on your program of study. Out of those eligible themes, you now need to determine which theme is the best match for your prior learning and experience. Using the following self-evaluation to determine what you have done in the past that might qualify you for a PLAR credit for Social and Cultural Understanding Theme (GED013). 5
6 Self-Evaluation 1. Have you ever a. Been stationed abroad (military service). b. Taught (for instance ESL) in another country? c. Lived (for a number of months) in another part of the world (other than the US, England, Australia, and New Zealand)? d. Worked with indigenous peoples? e. Lived in Northern Canada (for example Iqaluit)? If you answered NO to all of the above, then visit the PLAR website at access/ to find a more appropriate General Education Theme to challenge. If you answered yes to any of the above, take a blank piece of paper write down specific prior learning that relates to any of the questions about. You should think of experiences or learning you have had outside of a formal learning environment specifically, ones that: ü Lasted for more than a few days (ideally you were involved for months or even years). ü Allowed you to consider new ideas about yourself, your community, and the world. ü Exposed you to new concepts, particularly those related to theory, history, and ethics. ü Gave you the opportunity to acquire more than facts and skills. If your brief description looks like the example below, Theme 3 Social and Cultural Understanding is not a good match for you. Example: When I was sixteen, I went on a two week holiday to Paris with my family. If your brief description looks like the example below, Theme 3 Social and Cultural Understanding is possibly a good match for you. Example: When I was eighteen, I participated in a student exchange program. For three months, I lived in Costa Rica with my host family, and then their son came to live with me and my family for three months. 6
7 Meet with the PLAR Administrator If, after you have completed the self-evaluation in step two, your experience and prior learning are similar to example B, then the next step is to go to the PLAR office (Room C-205 Woodroffe Campus) to meet with the PLAR administrator. The PLAR administrator will provide details on completing the application, fees and the assessment process. Portfolio Submission Purpose The purpose of this assignment is to demonstrate that you have a good understanding of the cultural, social, ethnic and linguistic characteristics of a country outside of Canada and that you can compare these characteristics to your experience in Canada. Directions Answer the following questions, using the format of your choice from among these options. An assessor will meet with you to discuss your answers. a) You may answer the questions in writing. You do not need to use a formal essay style. You can simply list your ideas. Your assignment should be at least 5 pages. b) You may decide to use pictures with descriptions of the pictures. c) You may want to prepare a short (10 minute) oral presentation. d) You can use some combination of the above. 1. Name and describe your home country. You may want to include: a little about geography and climate social life, traditions and customs type of government and economic conditions demographics beliefs and values 2. Compare characteristics from your home country to life, as you have experienced it, in Canada. 3. List 3 barriers or difficulties that people coming from your home country to live in Canada might face. What advice would you give to these people to make the transition easier? Once you have completed the above questions, please submit it to the PLAR office for assessment (Room C-205 Woodroffe Campus). An assessor will evaluate your answers to determine if you are eligible to receive credit for this theme. The PLAR administrator will contact you with your results once the assessment is complete. 7
8 Credit Recognition An assessor will review your portfolio. Credit recognition will be granted for the Social and Cultural Understanding Theme (GED 0013) if all assessment criteria in step 4 are met.
