1 Los Angeles Mission Community College Fall 2016 History and Appreciation of Dance Dance 805, Section Welcome to Dance 805 Dance 805 History and Appreciation of Dance Instructor: Hiroko Hojo Phone: Direct: Required Text: Learning About Dance, by Nora Amborsio 6th Edition (2008) Office Hour: By appointment Course Description This course is designed to educate students in the art of dance by exploring its history as an art form and means of social expression through a survey of styles and artists within a cultural/historical context. Through lectures, written analysis, video viewings, and movement exercises, students will be introduced to various dance genres. Attendance of selected dance events at El Camino College sponsored by the ECC Center for the Arts will be required. Course Objectives 1. Describe and analyze the functions of ritual/religion, social expression/recreation, and art/theatre in dance. 2. Identify and define elements of dance such as space, time, and energy. 3. Analyze and assess dance with regard to aesthetic and artistic values, gestural, kinetic, and sculptural energy, and literal versus abstract representation. 4. Compare and contrast the aesthetic values among Eurocentric, Afrocentric, and Pacific Rim cultures. 5. Analyze the influences of moral, religious and ethical values on audience perception and performance interpretation. 6. Differentiate styles and genres of dance with respect to cultural backgrounds and time periods. 7. Analyze and assess the influences, contributions, and careers or twentieth century artists

2 such as Pavlova, Nijinsky, Graham, Ailey, Bojangles, Astaire, Hines, Fosse, and the Nicholas Brothers. 8. Summarize the innovations and influences of contemporary dance forms, athletic dance performances, and competitive dance forms in American musical theatre. 9. Identify dance terminology specific to various styles and genres. 10. Analyze and critique dance styles, music, and artists within a cultural, relevant and historical context. Student Learning Objectives Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to: (SLO 1) - Critique dance styles through a variety of means including live dance concert attendance and video analysis. (SLO 2) - Compare and differentiate between theatrical, social and world styles of dance. (SLO 3) - Identify the elements used in the choreographic process and distinguish between narrative, thematic, and abstract choreographic works. Special Resource Center: (818) English as Second Language Students All assignments, critiques, exams, extra credit, etc. must be completed in English. No exceptions will be made. However, if you need help, contact the International Student Service at (818) Course Communication Policy Under normal circumstances and for class-related issues, students will communicate with the instructor via and the forum on Etudes. All communication should be answered within 24 hours, Monday through Friday (You may get a response to your communication during the weekend but it is not guaranteed. Please expect some communication delay during the weekend. If you submit a communication after 12:00 noon on Friday, your answer may not get to you until Monday). Also, if you don t hear from me within 24 hours, you must re-submit your communication. Do not wait beyond 24 hours (Chances are that the instructor didn t get your ).

3 Drop Policy You are required to complete all your assignments in timely manner. All due dates and times will be posted in your course map. You will be dropped from the class if you; * Fail to submit the first assignment by the due date. * Fail to submit three or more of the assignments. * Fail to take two or more of the quizzes (No make up for a quiz or Final Exam) Any extreme circumstance such as a death in family, unexpected work-related trip, serious illness etc. will be taken into consideration. You will need to provide documented proof of the special circumstance in order to get an extension for the assignment. However, you will get only one due date extension for the duration of the course. Late Work Policy If you missed the due date and time for your homework and assignments, you can still submit them with reduced points. Reduced points and final exam policy are as follows: * Any late assignment submitted within 24 hours after the due date and time will be reduced to 50% of the possible points (if your due date is Friday midnight, you will lose 50% points even if you submit your assignment on Saturday 12:01am). * Any assignment submitted late beyond 24 hours, but within 7 days, will be reduced to 25% of the possible points. * Any submission delayed beyond 7 days will cause you to get no points. * No exam or quiz may be submitted late under any circumstance. You have one week to complete each of the exams and quizzes. * All extra credit assignments must be submitted by the due date. No late submission is allowed for any extra credit assignments. Academic Honesty Any illegal behavior such as cheating or plagiarism will not be tolerated. Disciplinary action will be taken against the offender and reported to the Dean. This will include, but may not be limited to, being suspended from the class and receiving an F" grade. DON'T DO IT!!!!

4 Preparation before Class Once class has started, make sure to assess your computer readiness. Should you have a problem, you will find information in the Distant Education assistant site that may provide a solution. Contact information regarding online issues is listed on the website. Please make sure to use the Chrome or Firefox for your browser for the smooth operation of the Moodle. The Internet Explore is not suitable for the Etudes and you may get troubles to get the access on study. Course Requirements Guidelines * All assignments must be typewritten in size 12 Ariel font, double-spaced (If your documents are not double-spaced, your maximum grade will be 3 points), and meet all the minimum qualifications. * All the assignments should be submitted in the essay form unless indicated, which consists of; introduction, contents and conclusion. No short answer format and do not repeat the questions in the contents. * If your assignments don t meet the minimum requirements, such as length, format, or submit in a wrong portal, you will get no point. *When you take a test: Do not submit any attachments with your tests. Do not cut and paste your work using Microsoft editor or any other program. Tests should only be submitted by typing in the box provided in the site. Failure to follow this directive will result in a failing grade! Requirements 1) Dance Concert Critique (Two 30 point critiques=total 60 points) Watch the designated full length dance concert videos and write a minimum 800-word paper for each. (The content must be 800-words minimum without the title and other information such as name and class number). Please see the guideline for concert analysis and dance performance notes from lecture. 2) Video Critique and Essay (7x20=total140 points) A critique based on material from the text, attached guideline and the actual video. 3) Creative Presentation (40 points) Present a topic or individual in dance through video, PowerPoint and/or movements demonstration in video format to the class. You must submit a minimum 400-word reflection and state your intended point of view for 5 points. You will get a maximum of 20 points from your presentation. You will receive 15 points by responding to three other classmates presentations. You may not create a joint presentation with classmates. Please see the sample presentation posted in the

5 assignment instruction. 4) Quizzes and test (10 points each/total 70 points) Seven quizzes will be given throughout the course of the semester. Each will be based on the material from the modules, video and text. *Students are not allowed to make-up any missed quiz. Take in the assignments, Tests and surveys site. 5) Final Examination (50 points) Final exam will be based on all the materials from the class. Take in the assignments, Tests and surveys site. Time limit apply. 6) Round Table Discussion (7X20 points =total 140points) Post your thoughts and reply to three other classmates posts. You are not allowed to participate in the discussion after the due date. 7) Extra Credit (Maximum 50 points) For 5 points extra credit- Submit a minimum 400-word critique on the designated TV dance events. You must submit the critique by 11:55 PM the Sunday following the broadcast of the program (you are not allowed to submit the previous weeks programs). Also, you may submit a 400-word critique on the designated dance videos. For 10 points extra credit- Submit a minimum 800-word critique on the designated live dance concerts. You must submit the critique within a week of the concert. Grade Grading Scale: * = A * = B * = C * = D *299 or less = F Instructor's Right The instructor reserves the right to change any contents of the syllabus if the need for change has occurred during the semester. The change will be announced to the participants of the course prior to the date of revision.
