1 Fuel for learning KS3 and KS4 learning programme A visit to the National Coal Mining Museum for England will give your pupils a powerful learning experience they will never forget. The unique combination of historic buildings, interactive galleries and natural landscape provides an immersive learning environment, where pupils can explore their local heritage, investigate Britain s industrial past, see science in action and develop their creativity. 2 The Underground Experience Fuel for learning GROUP SIZE/ SUPERVISION: Free 1 hour 20 minutes 2 adults: 17 students This is the exciting highlight of any school visit and is a truly unforgettable experience. With an ex-coal miner as their personal guide, pupils ride the cage 140 metres underground to discover first-hand what life was like as a miner. Choose from: Meet a Miner Tour Pupils go on a chronological journey through mining history from the 1840s, when whole families, including young children, worked together underground, right through mechanisation and up to the present day. A great tour to show how mining has changed over time. Hands on Tour This underground tour can be tailored to suit your group and includes the following interactive areas: > Underground stables - muck out, harness and feed a model horse > 19th century mining - get your hands dirty and work as a family to dig the coal > Lighting area - find out about lighting through the ages and play some lighting games > Geology - see a real coal face and handle rocks and fossils. All the learners enjoyed their visit; the guide captured their interest and the tour has left a mark on them. 3 Fuel for learning Workshops and Talks History Sally Sam Fletcher It s a Hard Life KS3 Travel back to the 19th century when women and children were working in mines. What were working conditions like? What jobs did people do? What significant events happened to change the lives of these people? Meet Sam or Sally Fletcher and take part in role-play activities to find out. Dig Deeper with one of our miners and work together to take apart an interactive model of Caphouse Colliery. Pupils will handle objects and ask questions to find out how mining has changed over the last 100 years. 4 Science Guided Tour of the Minewater Treatment Plant and Reed Beds A member of the Education Team will guide you around the Museum s innovative minewater treatment plant and explain how the iron-rich minewater is cleaned before being discharged into a local stream. KS3, KS4 Science and Environmental Studies on request 25 per tour (one class) 1 hour Art Sketching and Drawing around Site and Underground We are an Arts Award Supporter and the varied Museum site can be used as a starting point for lots of creative projects. The original colliery buildings and Museum collections provide fantastic inspiration for sketching and drawing activities. You can also request to lead your own drawing exercises underground. Drawing boards are available to borrow and the education room can be booked as a base if required. The Museum s loans boxes also provide great opportunities for observational drawing. What s in Our Water Pupils will see real science in action as they work with a science specialist from the University of Huddersfield to investigate the chemical, biological and physical processes of cleaning polluted minewater. Pupils will take a guided tour of the minewater treatment plant, conduct field experiments on water samples and then carry out further chemical analysis in the classroom. The session can be adapted for KS3, KS4 GCSE Science, Applied Science, Environmental Studies, OCR Nationals and BTEC courses NC FOCUS: Chemistry (Chemical reactions) 50 May and June Check our website for more details. Full day including underground tour Free Artist led Sessions Drawing Underground Using our unique and inspiring spaces underground, pupils will work with an artist to experiment with light and develop drawing techniques. DATES 50 20, 22, 23 October and 3, 5, 6 November 2015 Full Day Leisure and Tourism Talks Find out about how the Museum operates as a successful tourist attraction and markets itself to a wide audience. 5 Fuel for learning Explore the Museum Teacher led visits and gallery activities The Museum Site The Museum is set on a large site across two former coal mines, Caphouse Colliery and Hope Pit. Most of the galleries are based at Caphouse. There are so many things to see and do, which will excite your pupils curiosity and fuel learning across the curriculum. Authentic pit buildings: Our historic Caphouse site dates back to the 1790s and many of the original pit buildings are open for you to explore. Steam winding engine house: The steam engine was installed in 1876 by Emma Lister Kaye. Look out for her initials engraved on the building Pithead baths: An evocative historic building where a miner s shift started and finished. Built in 1938, it dramatically changed the lives of miners, and their wives and mothers. Stable Yard and Horsekeeper Talks: Visit the stable yard and listen to one of our horsekeepers telling you about the working lives of the ponies. We welcome teacher-led visits, but they do need to be booked in advance. Pupils activity trails and teachers resources, which you can use to support a whole day s visit or to complement a workshop, are available on our website Look out for the Art Cart too, which is stocked with drawing materials. 6 Galleries and Exhibitions Mining Lives Gallery: Explore interactive displays to find out about home and community, sports and leisure, disaster, trade unions and strikes Parkinson s Yard: explore a reconstructed back yard complete with tin bath and coal shed. Coal Interface Gallery: Get up close to the Museum s technology collection and find out how inventions through time have made miners working lives safer and more efficient. The Whitehaven corfe: Look out for this woven basket used for transporting coal underground. It is one of the Museum s rarest objects Gallery: Explore the working conditions and lives of the women and children who worked underground in the early 19th century, before the 1842 Coal Mines Act changed their lives. Listen out for the testimonies of women and children taken from the Royal Commission. Hope Pit How did miners get down the mine? How did they breathe underground? How did they power their machines? Find the answers to these science questions and more with a visit to Hope Pit, a smaller colliery dating back to the 1830s. Hope Pit is approximately 5-10 minutes walk from Reception. Electric winding house: explore this building to learn about the important job of a banksman. Nature Trail and reed beds Follow the half-mile Nature Trail and see how an old colliery spoil tip now creates a lush habitat for wildlife, plants and trees. Amaze your pupils with a trip to the reed beds to see how the Museum cleans the bright orange iron-rich minewater pumped from underground. 7 Loans Boxes and Classroom Resources The Museum in your classroom Loans Boxes Loans boxes contain original objects, photographs, background information and activities, which stimulate curiosity and hands-on learning. Boxes are free to borrow for up to a month. Outreach If you are unable to visit the Museum, or would like a session in school to help you prepare for your visit, then let us come to you! Sally Fletcher and the 1842 Royal Commission Meet Sally Fletcher, a Victorian miner. Through role-play and an historical investigation pupils will find out how Sally s life changed when the 1842 Mines Act was passed, prohibiting women and children from working underground. Speak to a member of the Education Team if you need help choosing an activity or planning your day on or education@ncm.org.uk > Once your booking is confirmed, you will be notified in writing. > We advise all teachers to make a preliminary visit. Supervision requirements Around the Museum site 1 adult: 10 pupils Underground tour 2 adults: 17 pupils Please see our Practical Information document for further health and safety information. SEN groups We welcome visits from special schools and will always try to meet your specific requirements. Most of the Museum site is accessible by wheelchair and there are accessible toilets in the main visitor centre. Lunch Facilities A picnic area is available for packed lunches, weather permitting. There is also a shared indoor space where pupils can eat their lunch, which will be allocated to you when you book. We ask you to leave these areas clean and tidy after use. Getting to the Museum The Museum is on the A642, halfway between Wakefield and Huddersfield, easily accessible from the M1 and M62. There is free coach parking available. For local schools (5 miles radius) we can support you with a parent drop-off or a minibus run. Please let our Bookings Officer know if you wish to do this. Toilets Coat and Bag Storage Lockable cupboards are available for coats and bags in the shared lunch area. However, space is limited, so if possible please leave belongings on the coach. The Museum cannot take any responsibility for items left in the cupboards. Toilets are located near the shared lunch space. Booking a Room You can book the Education Activities Room in the Learning Curve for the day if you need a base during your visit. The charge for this is 40. Museum Shop The Museum shop stocks resources for teachers and items suitable for children. Goody bags are available on request. Supervised groups of up to ten pupils can visit the shop at any one time. Cancellation of Bookings Fuel for learning Please let us know as soon as possible if you wish to cancel a visit. If a workshop is cancelled with less than five working days notice, the full amount will be payable.
