1 Cherokee Tribe Handbook Knowing exactly what is expected of you will help you be successful in your classes. Conducting yourself in a kind and respectful manner is an expectation that we have for young ladies and gentlemen of your age. Likewise, we will always treat you with respect. Please read the following procedures carefully and sign and return the last page. (Procedures are arranged in alphabetical order.) Absences/Tardiness Agenda Upon returning to school, it is your responsibility to get any papers, ask a friend any questions, and copy any notes. You will have the same amount of time to complete an assignment as the time you missed school. For example, if you are out only 1 day, you will have 1 day to make up missed work. Any work due on the day you were absent is due the day you return to school. If you know that you will be missing school, please let your teachers know in advance. You will be given an agenda to record all of your homework assignments, upcoming tests/quizzes, due dates, and important information. You should listen carefully to your teacher s directions and copy any assignments exactly as they are written on the homework chart. Check your agenda every night before and after doing your homework so you know you did not forget anything. Your parent(s) may also want to look at your agenda to help you stay on track. Bathroom and Drinks Behavior Binder You are permitted and encouraged to keep a water bottle at your desk. It will need to be taken home daily to be washed. All water bottles must have caps that close completely to prevent spilling. Only plain water is permitted in water bottles. No flavored water, juices, sports drinks, or any other similar beverages are permitted. Please ask the teacher for permission to go to the restroom before leaving the classroom. If you have a medical condition that requires you use the bathroom on a more frequent basis, please have your parent/guardian or doctor write a note so your teachers are aware of the situation. Please refer to the Cherokee Tribe Behavior Expectations page. You will be using a 3-ring binder daily in each class. Your binder must have tabs that will be used to separate the subjects. Any handouts, etc. that are used in class will be placed in this binder. Your binder should be taken home every night and brought back to school every day, even if you do not have homework. Please do not clean out your binder at home. You might throw away something important!

2 Distractions You may not have anything with you that would cause a distraction to you or anyone else. Multiple reminders about an object will result in the object being confiscated. Food in the Classroom Friday Folder Students should not bring in daily snacks. Students are permitted to bring birthday treats. Any treat must adhere to the District Food Policy. Food CANNOT be homemade, and MUST include an ingredient label. This also applies to food for class events. Every other Friday, a folder will be sent home. This folder will contain important papers and graded work that has been returned, as well as a signature page. The graded work should be kept at home, unless otherwise specified, and the folder should be signed and returned on Monday. Lunch Our lunch time is 11:25-11:55. We will have recess immediately after lunch. Neatness & Organization Your desk area and the cubby area are to be kept neat. There should not be any personal items left in your desk when you leave the room. Your desk is shared, so expect that anything you leave in the desk will be used and could be taken by students in other classes. If there is mess in the classroom, you are expected to help clean it up. Slearnals/SSlearnals Science (or Social Studies) Learning Journals This is a packet that will have all of the papers that students need for each unit. It will be 3-hole punched and should be kept in the content section of their binder. It needs to be brought to class every day. At the end of each unit, it will be collected and scored for a Work Ethic grade. If a student misses class, they are responsible for finding a classmate to go over the information with them and help them complete the missing Slearnal pages. Turning in Assignments Check all work for your name, heading, completeness, and neatness before turning it in. Turn in all assignments as instructed. Points may be deducted for late assignments. Late or missing assignments will result in behavioral consequences in accordance with the school-wide behavior plan. Work Habits We expect you to put forth your best effort at all times.

3 The Cherokee Tribe Behavior Expectations We will follow the Donegal School District Code of Behavior o Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe o A Rules Matrix for specific rules that fall under these categories is available in every classroom. The School District has distinguished between Major and Minor behavior infractions. Major behavior issues will be handled by the school principals. Minor behavior issues will be handled by the classroom teachers. Individual Behavior o The Cherokee Teachers will be using a color coded behavior system. A chart will be hung in the classroom. This chart is a student s personal daily indication of his or her behavior. Here is an example of the chart: Purple Role Model Status Green Great Job! Start on green every day! Blue Warning Yellow Consequence Orange Consequences Contact Home Red Consequences Contact Home Write Up/Administrator or Guidance Counselor All students begin each day on green and move down the chart with each infraction. Depending upon the severity of the misbehavior, students might skip directly to yellow, orange, or red. The movement is at the discretion of the teacher. Consequences are selected at the discretion of the teacher. Students also have the opportunity to move up from green to PURPLE! Students are moved to purple when their behavior is AMAZING! Students can nominate each other to receive this class honor. Students who have remained on green or purple all week will also earn a reward for their excellent behavior.

4 The Cherokee Tribe Homework/Classwork Policy Why homework is assigned: We believe that homework is important, because it helps reinforce what students have learned in class, prepares students for upcoming lessons, teaches responsibility, and helps students to develop positive study habits. When homework will be assigned: Expect homework to be assigned every night and occasionally over the weekend. Students homework and classwork responsibilities: We expect students to do their personal best on their homework and classwork, making sure it is neat and completed. Students should do their homework on their own and only ask for help after they have given their personal best. All assignments are to be turned in on time, which will be the next school day, unless students are told otherwise. For graded assignments that are to be completed at home, points may be taken off for each day the assignment is late. Classwork is to be completed in class and independently, unless otherwise specified by the teacher. In most cases, classwork will be due during that class period, unless it is a longer-term assignment. We understand that sometimes an unexpected situation may occur which prevents a student from completing that night s homework (i.e. family emergency or illness). If this happens, please have a parent or guardian send in a note so we are aware of the situation. Practices and games, such as for music or sports, are not considered unexpected. DIS Procedure for Chronic Missing Homework/Classwork chronic is defined as missing 3 homework/classwork assignments in one subject within a month Teacher will contact home when he/she suspects that a student may become chronic with missing homework/classwork. If a student becomes chronic with missing homework/classwork, the teacher will involve the guidance counselor and principal. If a student continues to be chronic with missing homework/classwork, an individual plan will be developed for the student. If a student still continues to be chronic with missing homework/classwork, official discipline referrals will be submitted.
