2 Prayer for Annunciation Catholic School Heavenly Father, We prayer you for the gift of Annunciation Catholic School And we ask for your blessings upon Our students, parents, teachers, and staff. May Annunciation always be a place Where your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ, Is welcomed, loved, and adored. Pour out the Holy Spirit on our students So they may grow in faith, wisdom, and service. Give us the courage To be joyful witnesses of the Gospel, And may our joy attract many, Filling our seats to capacity. Help us to be like our great patroness, Mary the Mother of God, Who always said Yes to your holy will. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen

Wagner identifies the seven skills students desperately need for their future: Problem-solving and critical thinking Collaboration Agility and adaptability Initiative and entrepreneurship Effective written and oral communication Accessing and analyzing information Curiosity and imagination

7 IB Mission: The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment. These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

8 International Baccalaureate The IB prepares students to become active, caring, lifelong learners who demonstrate respect for themselves and others and have the capacity to participate in the world around them. It focuses on the development of the whole child. It provides schools with a curriculum framework of essential elements the knowledge, concepts, skills, attitudes, and action that young students need to equip them for successful lives, both now and in the future.

13 Action: How is action defined in the PYP? Successful inquiry may lead to action, initiated by the student as a result of the learning process. This action may extend the student s own learning, the learning of others or it may have a wider social impact It is intended that the student taking action will grow from the experience, and that the process of taking action, or not, will contribute to each student establishing a set of values.

14 IB Exhibition The PYP Exhibition: encouraging in-depth, collaborative inquiry

15 IB Exhibition In the final year of the PYP, students, carry out an extended, in-depth, collaborative project known as the PYP exhibition. This involves students working collaboratively to conduct an in-depth inquiry into real life issues or problems. Students collectively synthesize all of the essential elements of the PYP in ways that can be shared with the whole school community. It also provides teachers with a powerful and authentic process for assessing student understanding. The exhibition represents a unique and significant opportunity for students to exhibit the attributes of the IB learner profile developed throughout their engagement with the PYP. It also provides schools and students with a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the transition of learners to the next phase of their education.

17 School Improvement NWEA MAP Children learn better and faster when teachers have a clear picture of what each student knows and is ready to learn next. How it Works: MAP Growth is a computer-adaptive test. If your child answers a question correctly, the next question is more challenging. If they answer incorrectly, the next one is easier. This type of assessment challenges top performers without overwhelming students whose skills are below grade level.

18 School Improvement NWEA MAP MAP Growth begins with a question at each student s grade level and adjusts the level of difficulty based on individual performance. What it Measures MAP Growth uses a RIT scale to accurately measure what students know, regardless of their grade level. It also measures growth over time, allowing you to track your child s progress throughout the school year and across multiple years. Once your child completes a MAP Growth test, they receive a RIT score.

19 School Improvement NWEA MAP The RIT scale precisely measures student performance, regardless of whether they re performing on, above, or below grade level. The Results: Your Child s RIT Score RIT scores have the same meaning across grade levels. If a fourth-grade student and an eighth-grade student have the same RIT score in reading, then they are testing at the same level in that subject.

20 School Improvement NWEA MAP How do schools and teachers use MAP Growth scores? Teachers can use the score to inform instruction, personalize learning, and monitor the growth of individual students. Principals and administrators can use the scores to see the performance and progress of a grade level, school, or the entire district.

21 School Improvement NWEA MAP Is MAP Growth a standardized test? Unlike a standardized test, MAP Growth is administered periodically during the school year. Instead of asking all students the same questions, it adjusts to each child s performance giving a more accurate measure of what they know. Teachers also receive results right away, which enables them to react more quickly.

22 School Improvement Creating a Positive Climate Culture: Responsive Classroom: is an evidence-based approach to teaching that focuses on engaging academics, positive community, effective management, and developmental awareness. RC helps elementary and middle school educators to create safe and joyful learning communities where students develop strong social and academic skills and every student can thrive.

23 School Improvement Creating a Positive Climate Culture: Responsive Classroom: Core Belief In order to be successful in and out of school, students need to learn a set of social and emotional competencies cooperation, assertiveness, responsibility, empathy, and self control and a set of academic competencies academic mindset, perseverance, learning strategies, and academic behaviors.

24 School Improvement Creating a Positive Climate Culture: Responsive Classroom: Guiding Principles The Responsive Classroom approach is informed by the work of educational theorists and the experiences of exemplary classroom teachers. Six principles guide this approach: Teaching social and emotional skills is as important as teaching academic content. How we teach is as important as what we teach. Great cognitive growth occurs through social interaction. What we know and believe about our students individually, culturally, developmentally informs our expectations, reactions, and attitudes about those students. How we work together as adults to create a safe, joyful, and inclusive school environment is as important as our individual contribution or competence. Partnering with families knowing them and valuing their contributions is as important as knowing the children we teach.
