1 Ohio Standards Connections: 1 st grade Strand: Reading Topic: Key Ideas and Details 2. Retell stories, including key details, and demonstrate understanding of their central message or lesson. 3. Describe characters, settings, and major events in a story, using key details. Lesson Summary: In this lesson, students will use Aurasma to hear the story If you Give a Dog a Donut be read aloud. After this they will be given sequencing cards and asked to put them in order. Then teachers will come around and check student work for comprehension. Estimated Duration: 35 minutes Commentary: Pre-Assessment: We will pre-assess students during guided reading groups. During this time we will keep track of students ability to recall events in a story and put them in order. This will allow us to determine how well students are able to comprehend stories they have heard. Scoring Guidelines: The scoring for the pre-assessment will be a checklist to see what students are and are not able to already do with comprehension and sequencing. Post-Assessment:

2 Our post-assessment will consist of students using the Aurasma application on their Ipads and then using sequencing cards to order events from the story. Scoring Guidelines: Scoring criteria will include putting events from the story in order. If students are incorrect they will be asked to listen to the story again and try to put the cards in order again until they are correct. Instructional Procedures: 1. Students will be given their Ipad and asked to open the Aurasma application. 2. Next the trigger image of the book If You Give a Dog a Donut will be passed out. 3. Students will use the application to hear the story If You Give a Dog a Donut read aloud. 4. Then sequencing cards will be passed out to students and they will be asked to put the cards in order. Students will be able to work independently or in groups of two to complete this assignment. 5. As they do this, the teacher will come around and check their work. If students are correct they will be able to color in the sequencing cards while others finish. If the students answer incorrectly they will be asked to listen to the story again and keep working until they put the events in the correct order. Teachers will help students as needed. Differentiated Instructional Support Students who struggle will be given a copy of the actual book If You Give a Dog a Donut for extra help as they use the

3 Aurasma application. They will also be given extra support and help as they sort their sequencing cards. Advanced learners will be able to work on their own to complete this project and can write about the sequence of the book after hearing it. Extension In the classroom there will be a basket of books with all of the If You Give a a books. This will show students text-to-text connections and help them learn to comprehend other stories. Books can be checked out from the classroom library to allow students to work at home as well. 4 Technology Connections Students will use Ipads to complete the assignments in this lesson. Research Connections In first grade comprehension and sequencing are extremely important to children s reading. We want to use this knowledge to help our students improve their reading skills.
