2 COURSE SYLLABUS FARSI I FRNL 1091 Topics address recently identified current events, skills, knowledge, and/or attitudes and behaviors pertinent to the technology or occupation and relevant in the professional development of the student. COURSE OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this Farsi course is to introduce non-native speakers to introductory conversational Farsi. Oral skills and conversational fluency are emphasized; instruction includes vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and occasional written practice. GOALS: To understand and speak conversational Farsi at a basic level with 80% accuracy, including the following topics: Introductions and greetings Personal information Numbers Time of day, schedules and routines Calendar days, dates, and holidays Locations and directions Community services Descriptions, likes and dislikes Occupations and common actions Classroom vocabulary To understand and use the following linguistic features with 80% accuracy: Affirmative and negative statements and questions with common verbs Personal pronouns Expressions of past and future time Basic information questions Expressions of ability and necessity Common idiomatic expressions 2

3 LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon successful completion of Farsi I, students will demonstrate basic competency in conversational Farsi by completing an oral evaluation with at least 70% accuracy. PREREQUISITE: A willingness to learn and practice Farsi in class and in other environments. REQUIRED TEXTBOOK: Instructor provides and/or designs materials for this course. COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND EXPECTATIONS This is a 24-hour, instructor-guided course. Instructors will speak Farsi in class whenever possible, limiting the use of English by instructor and students alike, and students will complete classwork and homework to practice spoken and/or written Farsi. ATTENDANCE: Students are expected to attend all classes. Students who miss more than one class session may be asked to repeat the course before registering for the next level of Farsi, at the instructor s discretion. REQUIREMENTS FOR COURSE COMPLETION CERTIFICATE: To receive a Certificate and Continuing Education Units, students must meet the following requirements: Attend at least 75% of scheduled class time Demonstrate 70% accuracy in a final evaluation with oral and written components Demonstrate sufficient oral fluency to communicate at a basic level, as evaluated by the instructor OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENT-FACULTY INTERACTION: Students are encouraged to ask questions and request clarification or guidance as needed during class. A question and answer period is always provided. OPPORTUNITIES FOR CAREER EXPLORATION: Topics relevant to future employment and career exploration opportunities will be presented to the students, including certification and degree prospects. OPPORTUNITIES FOR SUPPLEMENTAL INSTRUCTION: Students are informed of instructional aids and resources, including books, other publications, and web sites relevant to the course. 3

6 FARSI I Pre-Course Evaluation: Instructor Directions Ask the students questions orally, directing each question to an individual student. You may use the same question more than once, but try to vary your questions so that students cannot copy each other's responses. Ask each student 2-3 questions, and note the number of correct responses, looking mainly for meaningful replies that make sense. For the written section, prepare the students, and ask how many can write Farsi. If none can write, use this section as a comprehension test, allowing them to write answers in English to the questions they hear. Examples of appropriate questions: What's your name? What's your telephone number? What time is it? How old are you? Do you want to study Farsi? Why do you want to learn Farsi? What is your occupation? Improvise and personalize as needed. 6

7 FARSI I Pre-Course Evaluation Oral Section Respond verbally to the questions you hear in Farsi. If you understand the question but cannot answer in Farsi, indicate your understanding to the instructor. Written Section Now answer the questions you hear in written Farsi

8 FARSI I Post-Course Evaluation Instructors design final evaluation activities based on specific classroom content they have used during the course. Instructor-designed evaluation instruments must include: student oral performance for accuracy and fluency in pronunciation statements, questions, and responses an opportunity for extended discourse everyday language practice with commonly used verb tenses and sentence forms Students must pass the Post-course evaluation, attend 75% of class sessions, and have attained fluency at a basic level based on instructor assessment to receive a certificate of completion. 8
