Timing!

Literature Quote Banks Your daughter has a list of quotations in her exercise book/revision folder for each exam text.

Choose the most powerful quote you have noted down. You are going to explode it! HINT BOX: Understand the information: Understanding material is as important as learning is, says add your Professor Martin Coyle, lecturer at Cardiff school of English, quotation Communication here and Philosophy: What are the most powerful words what do they suggest? Has a technique been used? What does it reveal about the character? How does it make you feel? Why? How does it link to context? Challenge yourself to identify word types e.g. noun, verb, adverb, adjective

Choose the most powerful quote you have noted down. You are going to explode it! HINT BOX: What are the most powerful words what do they suggest? add your quotation here Has a technique been used? What does it reveal about the character? How does it make you feel? Why? How does it link to context? Challenge yourself to identify word types e.g. noun, verb, adverb, adjective

Memorising Quotes: All students will have a list of key quotes or a quote bank. She can revise quotes in many ways: Explode the quote using the prompts. Use a memory strategy to revise/memorise the quotation.

According to the Guardian Newspaper: Repeat to yourself: Use Look Say Cover Write Check. Neuroscience student David Cox says that repeating information is one of the best ways to remember it, as "pathways between neurons can be strengthened over time". Repeat out loud using a loud dramatic voice. Or repeat the quotation by singing it to the tune of a song. ( you always remember lyrics this way) Record yourself reading the quotation and then play it back. Repeat. Repeat. Produce drawings of key quotes. Illustrate similes and metaphors by drawing mindmaps showing connections between the key words. Use different fonts to show the tension or feeling in a quote. Revise on the go: By not confining your revision to one place, you can revise regularly, even if it's for short periods of time, says George Brooke-Smith, PPE student at York University: "Flashcards are great because you can carry them in your bag. Having them on the go can help you to take in information." You can also store quotes in your Smartphone. (turn it on airplane mode.) Take a long quotation and reduce is to 3 key words. Fill out a notebook with everything you need to know. Then record yourself reading the points. Listen to them until they stick in your memory.

Revising for Literature essays Brainstorm a list of themes. Make a list of quotations for each theme. Explode each quotation. Write a practice essay about how the theme is presented. Brainstorm a list of characters. Make a list of quotations for each character. Explode each quotation. Write a practice essay about how the character changes.

FROG Revision

If you have any questions about revision: Ask your daughter Ask your daughter s English teacher. Ask Miss Chapman (Deputy Subject Leader) or Mrs. Frampton (Head of Department)

New Maths Curriculum GCSE Mathematics is getting more demanding: The volume of the subject has increased The demand of that content is increasing too, with harder topics being introduced for both tiers The total time for examinations is increasing There are fewer marks at the lower grades and more marks at the higher grades for both tiers A new grading structure is being introduced There is greater emphasis on problem solving and mathematical reasoning Students will be required to memorise formulae

Year 11 Mock Exams Week beginning 5 th December full Maths papers; 1 st non calculator; other 2 calculator allowed Topic list and practice papers will be uploaded on Frog

Help and Support Topic lists on Frog These will not be available for GCSE exams, so make the most of them now!! Access to MyMaths and MathsWatch websites the latter has videos and practice questions. Regular homework to help consolidate understanding and help improve your independent learning skills. Revision lessons in class. Tuesday after school sessions (3-4pm) for Pupil Premium students. Maths help from individual teachers after school or lunchtime by appointment.

What students need to do Be prepared for lessons books, calculators and equipment etc. 100% focus in lessons asking for help if they don t understand. Revise properly on a regular basis. Complete homework (you should be spending between 2 and 3 hours per week on Maths homework and revision) If students do not achieve a grade 5 in their GCSE exams, they are unlikely to be accepted on some Key Stage 5 courses, and will have to continue to study GCSE maths until they achieve a pass grade.

How Parents can help Check your daughter completes the homework set; if no homework is set, she can do independent work on Mathswatch using the topics identified on the purple slips. Promote attendance to Tuesday support sessions if invited to do so. Ensure work set over half term and holidays is handed in by the deadlines. Complete the 6 week revision schedule which will be given to her after half term (using Mathswatch clips)

How Parents can help continued Remember, Maths is all about regular consistent work. At higher grades, students will need to memorise formulae and methods to solve problems. Ensure your daughter has a scientific calculator and geometry box and knows how to use the protractor & compasses. Finally, knowing your times tables is crucial for good marks in paper 1 which is non- calculator. Please contact the maths department for further clarification or any queries.

Useful websites 1 This is where they will find all their homework listed in detail (within next two weeks) more details to follow. This is the new website for VivoMiles for students to access with the same login details as they had last year. The current MyMaths password lasts till the end of September the new one will be issued to girls in Maths lessons once it switches over. (RICARDS / pyramid14) All GCSE subjects have materials for revision and clarifying understanding on here login and passwords the same as last year

Useful websites 2 We encourage students in Key Stage 4 and 5 to begin creating revision and study materials for themselves right from the beginning of their courses. Two great free websites to do this are: QUIZLET A great set of study tools flashcards, tests and study games they can make their own or access the millions of resources on their created by others. GOCONQR Another great set of free tools to make their own interactive mind-maps, flashcards, notes, slides and quizzes, again also with free access to those made by other users.

SPaG Guides Each exam board produces helpful guides to how SPAG is assessed in each of their subjects. A bing or Google search for SPAG in GCSE Geography will bring up the following:

SPAG Guides Click on the first one and you ll get straight to the document:

What happens after Yr11? At Ricards we believe in equipping you for the future so you can become your own Career journalist What, Where and how?

1. Helping students to decide what to study next? They need to know what their favourite subjects are They need to know their strengths and weaknesses They need to know and be realistic about their predicted grades They should be using the research tools available to them

There are 3 simple research tools that they can use to help them decide what? i could - What? E clips - What? Informed Choices UCAS to help you double check entry requirements for level 4

2. But which qualification and what level? A level, BTEC or Apprenticeship? Level 2 or Level 3?

9-4

Types of level 2 courses Academic will include GCSE retakes in Maths and English to secure a grade 4 General vocational Work themed Vocational Job specific

Level 3 Academic - Studying individual subjects A levels are the most common post 16 Academic qualifications.(you need 5 GCSEs at grade 5 or above) Other types of Academic courses include BTEC s.

BTEC - General vocational courses General vocational courses cover broad vocational areas, such as Business, Health and social care, Travel and tourism, Engineering, and Performing arts. They combine academic study with practical learning. They are not normally job specific. BTEC course are the main type of general vocational course and can be done at all levels. (Different levels, Different Themes and single, double and triple and can be mixed with A levels).

Vocational courses Vocational courses train you for specific jobs, such as catering, hairdressing, carpentry, bricklaying, motor mechanics and childcare. Vocational qualifications can be done at all levels including higher education. During a vocational course, you will be assessed on practical skills and your ability to do the job.

Apprenticeships Difficult to find but not impossible! Usually apply direct to employers. Identify area of interest and log on to the websites of national employers.

3. What about where? - Do you know what the options are? o RR6 and other School 6 th Form o 6 th form college o Further Education Colleges o Apprenticeships - College and employer o Traineeships mostly employer

A key factor will be how well you do in your Key Stage 4 courses, so you will need to look at entry requirements carefully for each subject This can vary depending on the School, College or employers specific requirements. For A levels it is normally 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) passes at grade 5 to include English and Maths. It s important to note that there can be differences between what different Sixth Forms and Colleges may ask for. This should be checked thoroughly before making any applications on the most up to date entry requirements. The issue is very much the 4/5 interpretation SOME colleges and schools have replaced their C grade entry requirements with 4s some with 5s so you must check carefully with each provider. For example for BTECs for us it s still 5s but we allow some 4s on with exceptions e.g. 4 in Maths and English but distinctions in Performing Arts subjects means they can still access the Perf orming Arts BTECs.

Help your daughter beat exam stress Tests and exams can be a challenging part of school life for children and young people and their parents or carers. But there are ways to ease the stress.

Watch for signs of stress young people who experience stress may: worry a lot feel tense get lots of headaches and stomach pains not sleep well be irritable lose interest in food or eat more than normal not enjoy activities they previously enjoyed seem negative and low in their mood seem hopeless about the future

Make sure your daughter eats well balanced diet is vital for your daughter's health, and can help them to feel well during exam periods. Some parents find that too many high-fat, high-sugar and high-caffeine foods and drinks (such as cola, sweets, chocolate, burgers and chips) make their children hyperactive, irritable and moody. Healthy eating tips for teens

Help your daughter get enough sleep Good sleep will improve thinking and concentration. Most teenagers need between 8 and 10 hours' sleep a night. Allow half an hour or so for kids to wind down between studying, watching TV or using a computer or their phone and going to bed to help them get a good night's sleep. Cramming all night before an exam is usually a bad idea. Sleep will benefit your daughter far more than a few hours of panicky last-minute study.

Be flexible during exams Be flexible around exam time. When your daughter is revising all day, don't worry about household jobs that are left undone or untidy bedrooms. Staying calm yourself can help. Remember, exams don't last forever.

Help them to study Make sure your daughter has somewhere comfortable to study. Ask them how you can best support them with their revision. Help them to come up with practical ideas that will help them revise, such as drawing up a revision schedule or getting hold of past papers for practice. To help with motivation, encourage your daughter to think about their goals in life and see how their revision and exams are related to them.

Talk about exam nerves Remind your daughter that feeling anxious is normal. Nervousness is a natural reaction to exams. The key is to put these nerves to positive use. If anxiety seems to be getting in the way rather than helping, encourage your daughter to practise the sort of activities they will be doing on the day of the exam. This will help it feel less scary on the day. This may involve doing practice papers under exam conditions or seeing the exam hall beforehand. School staff should be able to help with this. Help your daughter to face their fears and see these activities through rather than escape or avoid them. Encourage them to think through what they do know and the time they have already put into studying to help them feel more confident.

Encourage exercise during exams Exercise can help boost energy levels, clear the mind and relieve stress. It doesn't matter what it is - walking, cycling, swimming, football and dancing are all effective. Activities that involve other people can be particularly helpful.

Don't add to the pressure Childline says lots of the children who contact them feel that most pressure at exam time comes from their family. Try to listen to your daughter, give support and avoid criticism. Before they go in for a test or exam, be reassuring and positive. Let them know that failing isn't the end of the world. If things don't go well they may be able to take the exam again. After each exam, encourage your daughter to talk it through with you. Talk about the parts that went well rather than focusing on the questions they had difficulties with. Then move on and focus on the next test, rather than dwelling on things that can't be changed.

Make time for treats Think through with your daughter some rewards for doing revision and getting through each exam. Rewards don t need to be big or expensive. They can include simple things like making their favourite meal or watching TV. When the exams are over, help your daughter celebrate by organising an end-of-exams treat.

Useful websites

When should we get help? If your daughter's anxiety or low mood is severe, persists and interferes with their everyday life, it's a good idea to get some help. A visit to your GP is a good place to start. Please speak to your daughter s Head of Year if you think your daughter might need any further help
