1 Welcome to our Year 6 SATs and Curriculum evening

2 Mathematics SATs There are three tests:- Paper 1 - The arithmetic test (30 minutes, 40 marks) Paper 2 - Reasoning (40 minutes, 35 marks) Paper 3 Reasoning (40 minutes, 35 marks) These are all marked externally.

3 Coverage In each paper the questions get progressively more challenging starting with questions below then at age related expectations and progressing to more challenging questions above age related expectations.

4 Equipment Pencil and rubber allowed in the arithmetic test Pencil, ruler, rubber, protractor and mirror for Papers reasoning papers 2 and 3. All equipment will be provided by the school

11 How you can help Lots of discussion with children about their learning Use questioning regularly eg. cutting up a pizza: What fraction of the pizza has your sister got? What fraction is left? Walking to the shop: Estimate the distance from here to the end of the road. etc. Continue to practise times-tables and related facts and number facts regularly Use or KS2 BBC Bitesize (online revision resources). Practise arithmetic and written calculation methods regularly Supporting with and ensuring homework is completed

13 English SATs There are two areas of the English SATs:- Reading Grammar, punctuation and spelling These are both marked externally. Writing will now be teacher assessed internally.

14 English SATs Monday- Reading Test Tuesday- Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling

15 English SATs As with previous years, the English reading booklet will not be linked by a theme. The booklet will contain three or four texts. The least demanding text will come first with the following texts increasing in level of difficulty.

16 Reading Test The reading answer booklet will comprise approximately 35 to 40 questions (totalling 50 marks). The questions are: shorter, closed response items (such as multiple choice and matching questions); shorter, open response items; and longer, open response items that require children to explain and comment on the texts in order to demonstrate a full understanding. Questions are worth 1, 2 or 3 marks.

19 English grammar, punctuation and spelling test What is the English grammar, punctuation and spelling test? The English grammar, punctuation and spelling test assesses your child s English skills in five key areas in Year 6: spelling punctuation grammar vocabulary

20 English grammar, punctuation and spelling test Test format Punctuation, sentence-grammar and vocabulary will all be assessed by a series of short-answer questions in a variety of formats. Some question formats will be familiar to children from the current English reading tests and some will be specific to the grammar, punctuation and spelling tests.

21 Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling Test The English grammar, punctuation and spelling test at levels 3-5 has two components, worth a total of 70 marks: a booklet of short-answer questions a spelling task

22 Paper 1 Paper 1, the short-answer questions, consists of between 45 and 50 questions assessing grammar, punctuation and vocabulary. Each question is worth one or two marks with a total for the paper of 50 marks. The questions are: selected response items (such as multiple choice questions) or short, open response items, in which children may have to write a word, a few words or a sentence

23 Paper 2 Paper 2, the spelling task, consists of 20 sentences, which are read aloud by the test administrator. Each sentence has a word missing which the child must complete. The task is worth a total of 20 marks.

25 Writing Assessment Your child s writing level will be teacher assessed throughout the year; approximately 25% of all schools across Bedford are moderated. Fiction: Adventure, Historical Fiction, Myths and Legends, Play scripts, Dilemma and Traditional Tales Non-Fiction: Recount, Discussion, Persuasion, Explanation, Nonchronological report and Instruction/Procedure Poetry: Free Verse, Structured and Visual

26 How you can help Encourage your child to read daily (at least 15 minutes) with no interruptions or distractions make a note of this in their planners Encourage your child to read lots of different text types- newspaper/recipe book/magazines/leaflets/brochures etc. Ask your child to talk to you about what they have read and discuss features of the different texts (persuasive language/5ws) Discuss the layout of different texts and why they are like that. Encourage daily handwriting practise (handwriting sheets)

27 How you can help o Use the CPG or other revision books of your choice. o o Provide a quiet working area at home where your child can complete homework and revise.
