1 BETHESDA-CHEVY CHASE HIGH SCHOOL MYP Physical Education Course Overview Physical Education in the Middle Years Programme (MYP) focuses on both learning about and learning through physical activity. To this end, physical education fosters the development of knowledge, skills and attitudes that will contribute to a student s balanced and healthy lifestyle. This course requires students to actively reflect on their lifestyle as well as analyze data collected on a variety of fitness assessments. (Fitness Gram) There are no prerequisites for this course. Students can earn 1 credit for this course and it is a graduation requirement. Holistic Learning through: Educating the whole student, mind and body. Viewing each individual as a valued part of a whole community. Intercultural Awareness through: Acknowledging the contribution of various cultures in the area of games and sports. Communication through providing opportunities for: The development of the language of physical education as a way to communicate our ideas. Communication skills will be enhanced by reflecting on the results of teammates engaged in activity. In MYP Physical Education, teachers work collaboratively to develop a variety of techniques, focusing on approaches to learning, especially critical thinking and communication. Students take responsibility for their learning through individual and group work, addressing unit and guiding questions, expanding on their critical thinking skills, and building on their self-advocacy. Instructional Philosophy/Outcome To pursue a lifetime of healthful physical activity, a physically literate individual: has learned the skills necessary to participate in a variety of physical activities. knows the implications of and the benefits from involvement in various types of physical activities. participates regularly in physical activity. is physically fit. values physical activity and its contributions to a healthful lifestyle. The IB Learner Profile Students will demonstrate an understanding of the ten Learner Profiles and will seek to determine their own strengths and improve their own areas of weakness. They will also learn to recognize the strengths of others and their contributions to any given activity.

2 Course Goals/Standards The National Standards for Physical Education state that a physically literate person: (MCPS follows these) Standard 1 - Demonstrates competency in a variety of motor skills and movement patterns. Standard 2 - Applies knowledge of concepts, principles, strategies and tactics related to movement and performance. Standard 3 - Demonstrates the knowledge and skills to achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical activity and fitness. Standard 4 - Exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others. Standard 5 - Recognizes the value of physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression and/or social interaction. MYP Aims The aims of MYP physical education are to encourage and enable students to: use inquiry to explore physical and health education concepts participate effectively in a variety of contexts understand the value of physical activity achieve and maintain a healthy lifestyle collaborate and communicate effectively build positive relationships and demonstrate social responsibility reflect on their learning experiences. Materials Uniform: Proper Physical Education Uniform (gray/white t-shirt & black/navy blue shorts), Tennis Shoes, Socks, hygiene products and a Towel (optional) Combination to use in the Locker Room Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School Physical Education Policies These rules and regulations are your guide to the requirements and expectations of our department. They have been instituted for the improvement of class routine. Your complete cooperation will enable class to run smoothly and will enhance your enjoyment of physical education. We believe that physical education will improve the quality of your life. Have a good semester! Rules Governing Uniforms 1. The following is required of each student enrolled in a regular physical education class: Gray/white T-shirt and black/navy shorts, sweats or sweats when necessary. (no pockets, buttons or zippers) Short inseam should be at or longer than fingertips and should be worn on the waist. Proper uniform attire can be purchased at the school store. (Open: During lunch Mon. & Wed. 10:45-11:45am After school Tues. & Thurs. 2-3pm) YOGA Class- yoga pants/black/navy blue shorts, tennis shoes to and from locker room, gray/white t-shirt Tennis shoes - all classes (All shoes must have a back to them.) No sandals/flip flops/uggs/boots/flats. Students will not be able to participate without proper shoes due to liability and injury precautions. Any personal protective apparel or protective equipment necessary. No jewelry should be worn during any activity class.

Everyone is to be dressed in uniform every day, regardless of whether or not he/she is excused from active participation: certain injuries may exempt a student from dressing, but you must have the permission of your instructor. 3. Students will go outside until Thanksgiving Break during the fall semester and go back outside around Spring Break. Please be prepared to dress appropriately. Students are encouraged to wear sweats with cooler weather. 4. Any student that is participating in a B-CC governed extracurricular activity will not be waived from P.E. class at any time. 5. If a B-CC athlete doesn t dress out and/or actively participate to their full ability then the coach will be contacted and the athlete will not be able to participate in the extracurricular activity that day. Rules Governing Locker Rooms B-CC IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR LOST OR STOLEN ITEMS: *Students are assigned a combo for their choice locker* No gum, food, or glass bottles/containers are allowed in the gym or locker areas. Clothes and valuables must be locked in your locker. Nothing should be left unlocked in the locker room at any time. Your book bag or clothing bag should be locked in a locker if it fits properly. The locker room will be locked five minutes from the time the bell rings indicating class change and will remain locked until the time to get dressed for your next class. If you are 3-5 minutes late, you do not dress. You have 5-7 minutes to be dressed and in your assigned areas after the late bell. Rules Governing Conduct in Class 1. Procedure for unprepared student in physical education class: 1st time-teacher will talk to student 2nd time- call home 3rd time-teacher will assign a lunch detention, refer or contact administrator. 2. Enter and exit the locker room through the front locker room doors. Please remain in the locker room until the dismissal bell (excluding 1 st period for announcements). Failure to adhere to this policy will result in an appropriate disciplinary action. 3. Students may not use the restroom or go to the water fountain for the first ten minutes or the last ten minutes of class due to instruction and/or clean up. 4. Substitute teacher When circumstances require that a substitute teacher is in the classroom, students are reminded that anyone whose conduct is unacceptable will be dealt with in an appropriate manner. 5. Arrive on time, attend regularly and be prepared to learn with necessary supplies. 6. Respect the rights and property of your classmates and faculty members. Respect myself, others, learning and property. 1. Use class time wisely and take care of personal business before class. 2. Use acceptable behavior and language at all times. 3. Follow all school, county and state policies, as outlined in the MCPS/B-CC Student and Parent Handbook. Grading Policy 1. Your grade is determined by the following items and categories: Actively applying and Attendance The effort shown during all activities, your attitude and your sportsmanship. Your ability to listen to and follow instructions. Written and physical summative test scores Homework

4 Make-up Work For each excused absence (sick, death in the family, court, field trip, etc.), it must be shown in the attendance program and you must complete make-up work within a timely fashion. Make-up work is department based. All teachers give the same assignment. Evaluation 70% - Formative Assessment (Based on the daily rubrics) 20% - Summative Assessment (Skill/Written Evaluations minimum of 2 per quarter) 10% - Homework (minimum of 2-3 per quarter) *CAN REFER TO THE STUDENT HANDBOOK FOR MORE INFORMATION* Electronic Devices NO IPODS, NO CELL PHONES, NO PSP S OR ANY OTHER ELECTRONIC DEVICES unless specifically stated by your teacher. Students caught using any electronic device will have the Bag and Tag Policy enforced to security. Failure to give up the electronic device to the teacher will result in a referral. Academic Integrity Academic Integrity will be enforced. Please see student handbook for consequences regarding this topic. Tardy Policy 1. Any student late to the locker room and/or assigned area will follow the tardy consequences that the PE and Health Department has established: 1 st Tardy verbal conference and put into the attendance system. 2 nd Tardy no warning, put into the attendance system and the start of -3pts. per tardy. 3 rd Tardy Unexcused absent 2. Any student who comes more than 20 minutes late (this will be considered an absence) Attendance Policy When absent from class, it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to give your absent note to the attendance office secretary. It is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to complete all work within the allotted time as well. Remember, if your absences are unexcused, you will not receive credit or a max of 50% for the work.
