Frindle is the story of Nick Allen who is a more than a little dismayed that he has landed in Mrs. Granger s classroom for the 5th grade. Mrs. Granger is known as a strict educator with a passion for words. In his quest to stall for time, Nick questions Mrs. Granger for the origins of words. This sparks an unspoken battle between mischievous Nick and the unforgiving Mrs. Granger. When given an unsavory homework assignment, on the first day, Nick s decides to write a report designed to waste as much time as possible. For his last trick, he questions why certain words mean the things they do. Mrs. Granger informs Nick that it s him and everyone around him that decides what words mean what. This sparks the invention of the Nick s new name for the pen, the Frindle! The frindle sparks a school-wide sensation! All the students start using the word, it even ends up in the school paper, but Mrs. Granger is not a fan and fights the word at every turn. When all the hype is over and the town settles down, Nick is a junior in college with a trust fund full of money from the rights Bud Lawrence bought ten years ago. Nick soon receives a package from Mrs. Granger declaring their battle over and reveals that she opposed frindle for so long in order to increase its popularity and Nick s overall success. 2

3 Dear Educator, WELCOME! Thank you for selecting a Performing Live for Students! field trip with the Mesa Arts Center. We have a dynamic season planned and we look forward to connecting you to our many artists and performances. With Performing Live, students are able to experience live theatre and make educational connections well beyond the classroom. We also recognize and appreciate the energy and time spent on your part in coordinating field trips. In this guide we have provided information to help make this the best experience possible. In addition, the Mesa Arts Center has many open and inviting spaces that make good places to hold a brown bag lunch. Prior arrangements for lunch accommodations need to be made by either calling (480) or ing outreach@mesaartscenter.com. Please contact our offices should you have any additional questions (contact info on last pg.). Enjoy the show! TEACHER AND CHAPERONE INFORMATION Chaperones Assign each chaperone a designated group of students and provide him/her with a written list of the students in that group. Ask chaperones to stay with their assigned group throughout the field trip. Adult chaperones are responsible for the students conduct and behavior throughout their visit to the Center. Please review theater etiquette rules and responsibilities with all chaperones. Have the phone numbers of every chaperone in your group to quickly access each other in case of emergency. Theater Etiquette No Food or Drink inside the theatre (besides bottled water). Students must be accompanied by chaperones at all times. Cameras and recording devices may not be used during the performance. Please silence cell phones and resist the urge to text message. Listening and following the House Managers and Ushers will help the seating and dismissal process. Feel free to laugh, clap and enjoy the show but also to be respectful of those around you. 3

In Grades 3-7 students explore how character development and interaction impacts the story. Grades 3-7.RL.4 Interpret words and phrases as they are used in a text, including determining technical, connotative, and figurative meanings, and analyze how specific word choices shape meaning or tone. Grades 3-7.RL.7 Integrate and evaluate content presented in diverse media and formats, including visually and quantitatively, as well as in words. Language Grades 3-7.L.1 Demonstrate command of the conventions of Standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking. Grades 3-7.L.3 Apply knowledge of language to understand how language functions in different contexts, to make effective choices for meaning or style, and to comprehend more fully when reading or listening. Writing Grades 3-7.W.2 Write informative/explanatory texts to examine and convey complex ideas and information clearly and accurately through the effective selection, organization, and analysis of content. Grades 3-7.W.3 Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, well chosen details, and well structured event sequences. Speaking and Listening Grades 3-7.SL.1 Prepare for and participate effectively in a range of conversations and collaborations with diverse partners, building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively. Grades 3-7.SL.2 Integrate and evaluate information presented in diverse media and formats, including visually, quantitatively, and orally. 5

6 PRE-PERFORMANCE CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES Included in this resource guide are a variety of activities created to correspond with the Arizona College and Career Readiness Standards to enhance the students growth, reading skills, and overall comprehension. Questions to Ponder. Question 1 Frindle is all about words, do you know where words come from? How do you think they might come to exist? (Grades 3-7.RL.4, Grades 3-7.L.4, Grades 3-7.SL.1) Question 2 What do you do when you read or hear words that you don t understand? How do you figure out what they mean? (Grades 3-5.RF.3, Grades 3-7.L.4, Grades 3-7.SL.1) Activities to Explore. Have the students write a letter to the character they best identify with and why they identify with them. Include several things that they like about that character. Standards Implemented: Grades 3-7.W.2 Approximate time: minutes Create a list of characters, with a small illustration, and an event in the plot that involves each character. Standards Implemented: Grades 3-7.RL.3 Approximate time: minutes Have your class tell the story from start to finish. Have one student read an event to the class, and have another student present another event until all the students have gone and the story is complete. Students can write the list of events beforehand to make presenting easier. Standards Implemented: Grades 3-7.RL..2, Grades 3-7.SL.2; Grades 3-7.W.3 Approximate time: minutes 6

7 POST-PERFORMANCE CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES Questions to Discuss Question 1 Do you think you d ever use the word frindle? (Grades 3-7.SL.1) Question 2 Is there a difference between what Nick did, creating a new word for an object and slang/popular words or phrases? (Grades 3-7.RL.4) Question 3 How do you think the story differs from being read versus being performed? (Grades 3-7.RL.7) Activities for the Classroom Create your own Mad Libs! Have your students create their own Mad Libs from the sentence below. Break the students into groups and instruct them to utilize a classroom dictionary to find nouns, adjectives, and a verb in the dictionary that don t know to complete the sentence below. On Monday, (noun person) walked to school and found a (nounobject). The thing was (adjective color), and (adjective texture or shape). After ing (verb) the rest of the way to school, and showing all the other students, the thing was renamed: (create your own word!) Standards Implemented: Grades 3-7.L.1 Approximate time: minutes Materials Needed: Age appropriate dictionary, pencils, paper After the above activity is completed, the activity can repeated with new sentences that the students come up with themselves.
