1 HPISD FLES Curriculum - Kindergarten UNIT NAME ESTIMATED DURATION 9 WEEK PERIOD UNIT 2: EL SALÓN DE CLASE (AP Theme: Contemporary Life) Unit Overview 4 WEEKS In this unit students continue to develop language skills that enable them to talk about their everyday lives. Calendar skills such as counting and identifying the patterns in the calendar are developed daily in the regular classroom and emphasized and extended into the Spanish class, which targets curricular connections to math concepts. They identify and name the days of the week. Students learn to name classroom supplies and continue to practice numbers 0-10, begin to name common two dimensional geometric shapes, and identify colors with the goal of describing school supplies they find in their classroom. They also use verbs to talk about classroom activities and say which school supplies they use for those different class activities. Enduring Understandings The student will understand that: Concepts Calendar School Patterns Geometric Shapes Numbers Guiding/Essential Questions Acquiring content in Spanish will reinforce their understanding in other disciplines. The command of another language enhances the opportunities for personal and professional success. Learning a language requires acquisition and memorization of vocabulary. The study of other cultural values, products, practices, and perspectives dissolves the illusion of our separateness. A globally competent citizen communicates effectively in at least one language other than English (Profile of the Learner). An effective communicator speaks clearly and articulately for varied purposes and audiences (Profile of the Learner). An effective communicator listens actively and respectfully to the opinions and perspectives of others (Profile of the Learner). Student Key Guiding Question: How does the classroom function? Why does learning the days of the week aide in personal communication? How can patterns be represented and described? Why is it important to describe frequently used classroom objects and supplies? Why is it important to name classroom activities? How does geometry and number sense vocabulary help gain proficiency in a second language? How does the study of other cultures dissolve our separateness?
2 Why does a globally competent learner need to communicate in at least one other language? How does one communicate effectively for varied purpose and audiences? Why is it important to listen actively and respectfully to others? Presentational: Present to others what classroom supplies they use. 1.1 Interpersonal Communication-Communicate on some very familiar topics using single words and phrases that have been practiced and memorized. (ACTFL Proficiency Standard-Novice-Low) Ask and answer questions about classroom objects. Use correct verbs to describe classroom activities. Describe patterns to classmates. Name and describe attributes of shapes.
3 1.2 Interpretive Listening- Listen to and recognize memorized words, phrases, expressions, predictable questions and very simple sentences spoken by the teacher and supported by visuals. (NL) Recognize days of the week. Understand descriptions of classroom objects. Listen to descriptions of shapes and identify shapes. Recognize numbers 0-10 forwards and backwards. 1.3 Presentational Speaking-Present information about myself and state vocabulary using memorized single words and phrases, when supported by visuals. (NL) Name classroom objects from visual cues. Name and describe classroom objects needed for certain class activities. Describe patterns using numbers, colors, shapes, and classroom objects. Identify two-dimensional shapes, including circles, triangles, rectangles, and squares as special rectangles. K.6.D. Identify attributes of two-dimensional shapes using informal and formal geometric language interchangeably. Social Studies K.15.A. Students communicate in oral and visual forms; express ideas orally based and knowledge and experiences. Topics Facts Name the days of the week. Name and describe classroom objects and supplies. Name and identify classroom activities. State which school supplies are needed for different class activities. Describe patterns using calendar, numbers, colors, geometric shapes, and classroom objects. Attributes of geometric shapes. Numbers 0-10: Count forwards and backwards. In Spanish, the days of the week and months of the year do not begin with a capital letter. Calendars have patterns within the years, months, weeks, and days. Classroom objects and supplies can be described by number, color, and shape. Nouns and adjectives agree in gender (feminine or masculine) and number (singular or plural).
4 If a noun ends in o or os, it is typically considered masculine. If a noun ends in a or as, it is typically considered feminine. Each noun is assigned a definite articles (el, la, los, las) are words that mean the. Indefinite articles (un, una, unos, unas) are words that mean a, an, and some. Attributes of two-dimensional shapes include the number of sides and corners. *The correlated grammar concepts are indirectly taught.
