3 Curro Schools Curro schools provide excellent quality school education, including sport and culture, to learners from 3 months to Grade 12. These co-ed schools are traditionally parallel medium ( Afrikaans and English in separate classes) from Group 4 to Grade 9 and duel medium from Grade 10 to Grade 12. Class sizes are limited to 25 learners per class. A wide subject choice is offered in the FET phase and the IEB (Independent Examinations Board) examination is written at the end of Grade 12. These schools have comprehensive facilities and offer a wide variety of co-curricular activities. Curro is committed to setting the benchmark for education in South Africa by embracing 21st Century skills that children need in their daily lives. CURRO CASTLES NURSERY SCHOOLS Curro s nursery schools are English and Afrikaans medium and accommodate boys and girls from three months to five years old, but the entry level differs from school to school. Please refer to your school of choice for details, Children can learn and play from Mondays to Fridays, including school holidays. Classes are divided into age groups as follows: Group 1 3 months to 12 months Group months to 18 months Group 2 18 months to 24 months Group months to 30 months Group 3 30 months to 3 years Group 4 3 years to 4 years Group 5 4 years to 5 years Curro s nursery schools aim to inspire young minds to become extraordinary through the unique Curro nursery school curriculum. It is designed with early learning goals in mind: Language development Physical development Personal, social and emotional development Creative development (Art) Cognitive thinking, memory skills and numeracy (Mathematics) Knowledge and understanding of the world (Science and Technology) Curro strives to optimise learning in young brains and to capitalise on the potential children have for learning from a young age. We therefore pay special attention to the theories of teaching and the science behind how we develop to ensure that our children receive the best education possible. Children extend their boundaries of understanding by working to find solutions in an environment where dialogue between educators and children keep them motivated, stimulating their creativity whilst developing their cognitive abilities. The curriculum includes LEGO Education Learning Concepts and the activities built around Lego Soft Bricks form the important early foundations for later Robotics studies. Special attention is given to school readiness and brain development according to the latest scientifically proven methods. Children leave Curro s nursery schools, not only with very special memories, but also ready for the demands of big school and the outside world.
4 Primary School FOUNDATION PHASE (GRADE R - GRADE 3) In the foundation phase, focus is placed on the acquisition of skills, concepts and knowledge that are essential for further excellent learning. Curro offers a dynamic and invitational atmosphere where learners enjoy school and develop a love for learning. Curro acknowledges the potential of each learner to reach his/her optimum ability and therefore less emphasis is placed on competitiveness and more on individual achievement. Curro creates opportunities for personal growth in independence and responsibility so that learners become accountable for their actions in the intermediate phase. The three main learning areas in the foundation phase are: Home language (English or Afrikaans) and first additional language (English, Afrikaans or other) Mathematics Life Skills CURRO S ALIGNMENT TO 21ST CENTURY SKILLS INCLUDE: Mathematics: The curriculum has been written with a learner-centric, problem-solving approach leading to an individualised, well-developed number concept in young learners. This will facilitate the successful learning of Mathematics as an abstract subject from Grades 4 to Grade 12. Literacy: In this subject we have incorporated the latest global trend of matching learners to book levels and teaching guided reading and writing. This develops conceptual understanding at their own pace. Literacy skills are also taught using structured text types. Life skills: We have added Robotics and Science to this subject as it involves design and a deep level of cognition, which underpins creativity. In Grades 2 and 3 learners use soft wear to programme their Lego educational toys with enhanced critical thinking, problemsolving and creativity. Collaboration is encouraged by working in pairs. INTERMEDIATE PHASE (GRADE 4 - GRADE 6) SENIOR PHASE (GRADE 7) In the intermediate phase, the emphasis is still on establishing basic foundations, but learners are led into more abstract thought and independent work. Application of skills and concepts is also a main focus, aiming to prepare learners for the senior phase in high school. LEARNING AREAS in the intermediate phase include: Home language (English or Afrikaans) First additional language (English, Afrikaans or other) Mathematics Natural Science and Technology Social Sciences Life Skills To align with 21st Century skills Curro focuses on core subjects namely, Mathematics, Languages, Science and Technology. Mathematics: We have done a re-write of the Mathematics curriculum to allow for a learner-centric, problem-solving approach. Language: Curro uses the individualised approach of matching learners to book levels as well as guided reading and writing when teaching languages. Added to this is the implementation of reciprocal teaching of reading to enhance each learner s deeper reading comprehension. Science & Technology: In robotics learners build and programme Lego robots for 25% of the tuition time. The Science curriculum is being adapted to include 21st century content and learning.
5 Hi gh Schoo l SENIOR PHASE (GRADE 8 - GRADE 9) Curro practises a system of invitational education in which learners are regarded as able, valuable and responsible. Curro s Christian ethos is supported by values that encourage learners to explore and express their individuality within acceptable limits and to accept responsibility for their actions. Curro encourages learners to follow their hearts and to develop into the best people they can be. The curriculum covers problem-solving, creative thinking and the development of skills and values. Learners now start preparing for the Independent Examinations Board (IEB) matric examination. The CAPS curriculum is implemented here with the Mathematics curriculum allowing for a more focused and problem-solving approach. The same literacy principles as in previous phases, is included in the home language teaching with a bigger emphasis on Language Arts. In the Science and Technology curriculum we focus not only on 21st Century skills but the most current content. This will include content on satellites, plastic technology, nanotechnology as well as a study of the da Vinci interventions and this all done with CAPS and the IEB in mind. SUBJECTS in the senior phase include: Home language (English or Afrikaans) First additional language (English, Afrikaans or other) Mathematics Natural Science Social Sciences Technology Economic and Management Sciences Life Orientation Creative Arts FET PHASE (GRADE 10 - GRADE 12) In the FET phase, learners make their subject choices. Curro offers learners a wide selection of subjects, enabling them to pursue further studies for their chosen careers. Learners are thoroughly informed, enabling them to make wise choices, and are encouraged to include Mathematics and Science. Please refer to your school of choice for the subject choices, In the FET phase, emphasis is placed on thorough preparation for the IEB matric examination. We are very aware that, at the end of their school careers, learners need to excel in their matric examination to ensure access to tertiary institutions and selection for their areas of study. Although we take Grade 10 Grade 12 very seriously, we realise that a purely examination driven approach is not the answer. Curro has developed an additional inter- Curro-subject-head system to ensure that we have quality assurance across schools. This system expands well beyond examinations and question banks, enabling educators to share resources, teaching ideas and material that can be used on tablets to enhance learning and the development of 21st Century skills. SUBJECTS in the FET phase must include: Home language (English or Afrikaans) First additional language (English, Afrikaans or other) Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy Life Orientation BALANCED ACADEMICS, SPORT & CULTURE Not only academics are important at Curro, but emphasis is also placed on sport and culture. Value-added programmes are also part of learning and development. Co-curricular activities vary from school to school, but can include: SCHOOL SPORT Rugby, soccer, netball, hockey, tennis, cricket, athletics and swimming PRIVATE SPORT Martial art, horse riding, gymnastics, golf, cycling, etc. Other activities can include: Chess, drama, art, dance, music, choir, eisteddfods and public speaking VALUE-ADDED PROGRAMMES include educational tours/camps/excursions/workshops, character-building programmes, anti-bullying programmes, entrepreneurship, study methods and job shadowing. Please refer to your school of choice for available activities:
6 The Curro Difference Curro schools are constantly identifying opportunities to grow and establish themselves as schools of choice. 21ST CENTURY LEARNING We are currently raising children who are digital natives and therefore embrace 21st Century learning by incorporating innovative technology into our classrooms. Tablets in our classrooms, was first formally launched in 2010 and has created an unrivalled world of possibilities in education. The learning process is no longer content-driven, but encompasses the knowledge explosion, which is constantly available all around us. Educators are now able to send multi-media learning support material home and learning material is kept alive and current. 21st Century skills in our classrooms To ensure that our learners become responsible internet users, we have a comprehensive IT curriculum, incorporating knowledge, cloud technology and the skills for the latest software. We optimise the use of tablets in our classrooms. We incorporate the latest thinking in 21st Century teaching into our assessment practices which includes (new methodologies, teaching strategies and utilising the tablet as a learning tool). In our search for world-class education and excellence, Curro strives to achieve 21st Century skills in our classrooms as advocated internationally, namely 3R s, 4C s and the 2M s. 3R s: The three R s referred to reading, writing and arithmetic. 4C s: These are the skills we need to teach and reinforce daily in our classrooms: communication, collaboration, critical thinking and problem-solving, creativity and innovation. 2M s: These represent motivation and metacognition and form one s ability to think about one s thinking.
