teacher2teacher: Peer Coaching for ICT ICT Peer Coaching Portfolio Learner: Peer Coach: Coaching Commencement Date:
Introduction: The ICT Peer Coaching Portfolio, included in the teacher2teacher: Peer coaching for ICT wiki, is co-developed by the learner and his/her ICT peer coach. It enables the learner to build up an evidence-based portfolio to demonstrate progress towards the achievement of his/her identified goal. It also provides the ICT peer coach with a record of the strategies used to support the learner, evidence collected and feedback provided. The ICT Peer Coaching Portfolio contains the following templates: Learner ICT Peer Coaching Plan Learner ICT Peer Coaching Plan with Coach s Guiding Questions Pre-Observation Conference #1, #2, #3 ICT Skills/Practice Session #1, #2, #3 Post-Observation Conference #1, #2, #3 ICT Peer Coaching Programme Learner Evaluation Sample Data Collection Templates Learner and Students. For some learners, a fully paper-based ICT Peer Coaching Portfolio may best meet their needs. Enlarging the Portfolio to A3 size so that both peer coach and learner can add their entries may suit. Plastic binding or similar will enable hardcopy templates and artefacts to be added throughout the peer coaching partnership. Alternatively, the learner may prefer to develop an electronic journal of the Portfolio and embed or link to artefacts and for both learner and coach to add comments electronically. Placing the various templates on a wiki or blog may also be further way of working together. Whatever format is selected, it will reflect the learner s journey and commitment to his/her professional growth. 1
Learner ICT Peer Coaching Plan Template Learner name: Date of first planning meeting: 1. My vision for how ICT can be used in my classroom to support student learning: 2. Possible ICT Peer Coaching Goal to help me achieve my vision: 3. Why I believe I need the assistance of an ICT peer coach at this stage: 4. 4 5. What are some possible steps I can take to achieve the goal? 6. How will I know when this goal has been achieved? 7. What evidence (teacher and student) will I need to collect to show progress towards, and achievement of, this goal? Which curriculum standards could I target? 3
End of Coaching Cycle Review At the end of each ICT peer coaching cycle (pre-observation conference, optional ICT Skills/Practice session(s) and post-observation conference), review your initial goal to assess your progress. End of Coaching Cycle1 1. How has the completion of this coaching cycle assisted you in taking steps towards achieving your goal? 2. Are there any refinements or adjustments that may need to be made to your goal (or your vision for how ICT can be used in your classroom to support student learning) that need to be made? 3. How will the ideas for the next steps you identified through the postobservation conference help you achieve your goal? 4
End of Coaching Cycle 2 1. End of Coaching Cycle 3 1. Note: Three coaching cycles are presented here. You may need more depending on the goal you have identified and your level of ICT skills and understanding. Make additional copies of the templates as required and include in your ICT Peer Coaching Portfolio. 5
Learner ICT Peer Coaching Plan Template with Coach s Guiding Questions Learner name: Date of first planning meeting: Learner 1. My vision for how ICT can be used in my classroom to support student learning: ICT Peer Coach Guiding Questions In an ideal classroom, how would your students be using ICT as part of their learning program? How would you see yourself using ICT in an ideal classroom? 2. Possible ICT Peer Coaching Goal to help me achieve my vision: What ideas have you got at this stage? How would you like to see ICT used in your classroom in relation to this goal? 6
3. Why I believe I need the assistance of an ICT peer coach at this stage: What support and assistance would you like from me at this stage? 4. What are my ICT skills and pedagogy now in relation to the goal and what evidence do I have to support this? Do you have any data on your ICT skills you would be comfortable in sharing? How do you currently use ICT in the classroom? Can you describe some examples? What classroom strategies do you use to support learning and teaching with ICT? 5. What are some possible steps I can take to achieve the goal? How can the broad goal be broken down into manageable steps (subgoals for focus areas for individual peer coaching cycles)? 9 Why might this focus work best for you now with the class you have in mind? 6. How will I know when this goal has been achieved? 27 Sample Data Collection Templates 26
Data Collection Template - Learner Data Sample 1: Learner demonstration of ICT tool or software application For example, how to download images and save to an online folder; how to use a new software application. Is demonstration sequential, logical and appropriately paced? Learner introductory instructions/explanation: Notes: Sequence of steps taken by learner: Learner Action 1. For example: Learner demonstrated where cable plugged in to the camera and computer Instructions Provided by Learner The first thing to do is to connect the camera to the computer using the cable Notes Ensured all students were watching Had back to students for some of the time while giving instructions Additional observations: 27
Data Collection Template - Learner Data Sample 2: Providing feedback to students For example, following presentation of a digital story. Is feedback clear and specific and provides concrete suggestions for future improvement? Description of student work to which learner provided feedback: Notes: For example, students were asked to create a 3 minute digital story highlighting one way in which volunteers help out in the local community. Feedback Provided by Learner 1. For example: The images that you used at the beginning of your digital story worked well because they helped set the scene for the audience. 2. The music you selected was good Link to Student Work: First four images used in story Background music throughout the story Notes Direct link between feedback and appropriate section in digital story No explanation of why music was good Additional observations: 28
Data Collection Template - Learner Data Sample 3: Classroom Management Strategies For example, students working in groups to set up a team wiki to present the results of their science project. Are instructions and scaffolding clearly presented and sequential to support students in groups? Are all resources required by students ready for them to access? 2. Learner preparation 6. Management strategies used to resolve issues encountered by students 1. Introduction to session 3. Verbal instructions 5. Management of technical issues 4. Written instructions/ prompts for students 29
Data Collection Template - Student Data Sample 1: Student use of ICT to create a product For example, students working in pairs to develop a podcast. (Note: Data could be presented as a series of digital images taken by the coach to demonstrate sequence taken by students.) Student 1 Student 2 Notes 1. Spoke into microphone 1. Checked volume gauge 2. Read first few sentences of script to rehearse 2. Played back and provided feedback on pacing Additional observations: 30
Data Collection Template - Student Data Sample 2: Strategies used by students to conduct a search on the internet. Context: For example, students have been asked to locate information on the internet they can use for their project on the impact of exercise on staying healthy. Four students will be observed by the coach individually for 15 minutes and they will be asked to explain the steps they are taking. A digital voice recorder will be used to capture their explanation. Student 1 (Notes/keywords used by student in their explanation.) Student 2 (Notes/keywords used by student in their explanation.) Student 3 (Notes/keywords used by student in their explanation.) Student 4 (Notes/keywords used by student in their explanation.) 31
Data Collection Template - Student Data Sample 3: Student on-task time when using Student Observation Students 1-6 observed for first 15 minutes of lesson after class was set today s task Student 1 Student 2 Student 3 Student 4 Student 5 Student 6 32
