2 Dear Candidate Introduction Thank you for expressing an interest in finding out more about Dorset Studio School. We have put this pack together to explain more about who we are and who we re looking for to join us! As a new organisation we are in the unique position of starting things from scratch: a golden opportunity for ensuring we have the right people doing the right things from the word go. What we are Dorset Studio School is a brand new school in Dorchester which opened in September 2014 for year olds. It will be located within the campus of our co-sponsor Kingston Maurward College. Our school is ambitious and aims to deliver learning in ways that promote workplace expectations and requirements. We see our students as young employees and expect them to behave in ways that show they are both work-ready and work-aware. We are passionate about removing barriers to learning through an innovative, flexible and stimulating curriculum. Our curriculum strongly reflects the interest and involvement of local employers, with our specialism of environment and land based sciences. Our teaching methods are not always conventional, adapting to the needs of our students and pushing the boundaries with the aid of technology and high quality professional development. Our expectations are high, ensuring we develop fulfilled and inspirational young people. Our aim is for students to make excellent progress, achieve good examination results, develop personally and progress to be outstanding employees in the community. 2

Temporary and part-time (12 hours per week), with flexibility to meet business needs. Dorset Studio School Trust Partner organisations: The Thomas Hardye School Line Manager: Kingston Maurward College Lead Learning Coach Dorset Studio School Learning Coach - Main accountabilities Role Summary Developing, planning, delivering effective and high quality learning experiences for students that are in accordance with the Dorset Studio School curriculum and the ethos of the Studio School Trust. Being accountable for the learning and achievement of a group of students through working with them as a learning coach. Being responsible for the delivery of areas of learning within the context of the studio school curriculum by contributing subject expertise. Main Activities: Learning & Teaching Use subject knowledge and skills to prepare, plan and deliver national curriculum core subjects and or the other areas of learning that form a part of the Dorset Studio School curriculum through innovative exciting themed learning and enterprise projects wherever possible, using subject specific knowledge and skills. The CRAT skills framework should inform teaching and learning, and be mapped across and reinforced throughout the learning opportunities. Work with students as a learning coach to remove barriers to learning and to personalise learning so that students develop autonomy in co constructing their learning so that it better meets their individual needs. Provide high quality subject specific sessions which ensure that students acquire new knowledge and skills; develop ideas and increase their understanding; develop their ability to concentrate and work productively both independently and collaboratively, producing a high quality end product. 4

5 nsure students make progress through: well planned and well-paced learning activities, regular assessment for learning sessions that are well matched to students needs with an appropriate level of stretch and challenge and well organised and skilful use of resources, including time, new and emerging technologies and the use of personal coaches. ngage students in self supported study, enriching, reinforcing and extending the learning undertaken in formal learning activities. Support students in a consistent and effective way so as to develop their learning behaviour. nsure students engage in self-evaluation and reflective partnership work with peers and other teaching staff. nsure that Personal Coaches are clear about the learning objectives and outcomes in learning activities, and understand the sequence of teaching and learning in particular subjects so that this can be communicated to the students. Leadership and Management Take responsibility for ensuring skills knowledge and understanding in relation to the job description are up to date, including those requirements of the programmes being followed and their accreditation. Attend briefings, register students and assist with supervision before, during and after the working day. Attend meetings arranged for staff, with parents and carers and, when appropriate, with employers and other outside agencies/providers. Supervise and, so far as practicable, teach students whose teacher is not available. Assess, record and report on the personal development and academic attainment and achievement of students. nsure that work is always set for classes when absence is foreseeable. Care, Welfare, Guidance and Support Maintain an ongoing overview of the personal and academic development of each student to whom you are assigned as a learning coach, and of all students in relation to the specific areas of learning you plan and deliver. Negotiate the individual learning plan for each student to whom you are assigned as a learning coach. 5

6 Work with other colleagues to identify when an intervention is needed to secure continual learning progress. Liaise with the SNCO and personal coach, to ensure appropriate provision is in place to support students in your specific subject area. Maintain accurate and comprehensive records of individual student progress and provide timely information about curriculum attainment against targets. Contribute to the assessment and reporting of student development in line with the Dorset Studio School policies and achievement across all skills and competences. General All staff are expected to: Work towards and support the Studio s vision and objectives; Support and contribute to the Studio s responsibility for safeguarding students; Work within the Studio s Health and Safety Policy to ensure a safe working environment for staff, students and visitors; Work within the Studio s Schools Policies to promote equality of opportunity for all students and staff, both current and prospective; Maintain high professional standards of attendance, punctuality, appearance, conduct and positive, courteous relations with students, parents and colleagues; ngage actively in the performance review process; Adhere to policies and procedures as set out in the staff handbook or other documentation available to all staff. NB: The aim of the job description is to indicate the general purpose and level of responsibility of the post. Please be aware that duties may vary from time to time without changing the character or general level of responsibility. Duties may be subject to periodic review by the Principal (in consultation with the post holder). Safeguarding Dorset Studio School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of learners, including children and young people, and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. Criminal Records Disclosure and Barring Service check The School is unable to appoint anyone who is barred from working with children or vulnerable adults to a Regulated position. 6

7 The offer of an appointment will be subject to a satisfactory nhanced Disclosure under the Protection of Children Act 1999 and the Police Act This means that when applying for a post, candidates will need to detail all convictions they may have both spent and unspent. ICT literate and proficient in office packages. D D Terms and conditions Salary 28,636. We will match salary to skills and experience. Less experienced applicants will be offered a lower salary with an opportunity to increase once performance is established. Pay date Probationary period Hours of work Contract of mployment Pension Medical Notice to terminate by the Board of Governors Notice to terminate to the Board of Governors Offer of appointment Monthly in arrears on last working day. One year. Such hours as are reasonably necessary for the proper performance of the duties of the role. The Contract of mployment will be based on the provisions of the Dorset Studio School Academic Staff Contract. You will be automatically enrolled onto the Teachers Pension Scheme. Contribution rates vary between schemes. A post offer employment check is necessary and this may require a medical examination. Three months. Three months. Offer is subject to Dorset Studio School entering into a Funding Agreement with the Department of ducation. Declaration of Interests Offer is subject to a satisfactory medical report, proof of eligibility to work in the UK, references satisfactory to the board, receipt of relevant certificates and qualifications, successful completion of probationary period, receipt of a satisfactory, enhanced DBS check.
