Possess a written and performing knowledge of necessary meters, note and rest values, and the letter names of the lines and spaces (2) 2. Understand the basic principles of tone production for his/her instrument and be able to produce a satisfactory tone throughout his/her functional range, using proper posture and instrument placement (2) 3. Possess a written and performing knowledge of needed musical terms, scales and chords (2) 4. Demonstrate knowledge of the proper assembly of his/her instrument, correct nomenclature of parts, and cleaning and care (2) 5. Demonstrate knowledge of the 6 basic elements of music and how they work together to create music (rhythm, melody, harmony, tone, form and style) (2) 6. Demonstrate the ability to sight- read at a level one year below his/her grade level (2) 7. Acquire a knowledge of various styles of music through sight- reading (2) 8. Be able to perform major and minor scales and arpeggios relative to his/her performance level (2) 9. Be able to recognize intonation problems, their causes and cures (2) 10. Exhibit proper rehearsal etiquette, ability to follow a conductor and self- discipline resulting in a contribution to the performance group (2)

2 Grading Criteria Ø 20% of the quarter grade will be based on the quality of the student s performance on playing tests and at concerts. Student s performances will be assessed on pitch accuracy, rhythmic accuracy, tone quality, bowing and articulation, tempo, and expression. Assessments will occur formally via ipad, videos uploaded to Schoology and informally at the concerts. Ø 20% of the quarter grade will be based on the student s participation in class. Students will start each day with 5 points. They can keep their points if they bring their instrument, music binder, pencil and assignments to class, and if they attend and participate in class and exhibit proper rehearsal etiquette. Ø 20% of the quarter grade will be based on attendance at and progress made at the student s weekly lesson. Students are pulled out of a class of their choice once a week for about 25 minutes for a lesson. Students are assessed on how well they are learning concert pieces and assigned pages in their lesson books. Method books are listed on the next page. Lessons that are missed due to the fault of the student need to be made up prior to the end of the quarter. Students must bring their instrument, orchestra music, and lesson books to each lesson to receive all 10 points for that week s lesson. Ø 20% of the quarter grade is based on written work done in and out of class and tests based on that written work. We will study form & analysis, music theory, music history, and vocabulary. Cheating on a test or assignment will result in a zero for that assignment and a phone call home. Subsequent infractions will result in a failure for the quarter. Ø 20% of the quarter grade is based on the student s homework. The work the student does at home is really their private practice. This is documented with a practice journal that is due the first day of each week. The practice sheets need to be filled out by the student and signed by a parent. Parents will always know what the student should be practicing as the student will write the assignment on their sheet at lessons and during class. Students will be assigned specific measures of orchestra concert pieces and specific pages from their lesson books to practice at home. Grading for assignment sheets is as follows: 80 or more minutes =A, min.=b, min.=c, min.=d, less than 30 min.=f. Try to practice at the same time each day and in the same place with minimal distractions. Concert Attendance. Attendance at all the listed performances is mandatory. The only exception is severe illness or other extenuating circumstances. A written parent excuse is required in cases of illness or extenuating circumstances. Athletes need to check for game/meet conflicts with their coaches/athletic director as soon as possible. Go to to find each sports schedules. Oftentimes coaches and the athletic director are willing to alter the day or at least the start time of games/meets to accommodate school conflicts, if they know well in advance. Failure to follow these rules will result in the student s grade lowered by one letter for that quarter.

3 Extra credit. Students wanting to obtain extra credit for attending or performing in nonrequired concerts, taking private string lessons outside of the school day, or completing non-required written projects must fill out an extra credit form and turn it in with the necessary documentation prior to the end of each quarter. Incompletes. Students who are out of school at the end of the quarter due to illness or extenuating circumstances may be granted an incomplete on their report card. Upon return to school, the student has two weeks to complete the missed work. Grade scale percentages: A , A 93-96, A , B , B 83-86, B , C , C 73-76, C , D , D 63-66, D , F 0-59 Materials Needed Ø a 1-inch 3-ring binder Ø hole reinforcements Ø an extra set of strings (for students who own a full size instrument) Ø a mute Ø all lesson books (7 th graders need: Essential Elements 2000 for Strings Book 2, and Suzuki Volume 1. 8 th graders need: Essential Technique 2000 Book 3, and Suzuki Volume 2 or higher.) Ø a shoulder rest (violinists and violists only) Ø a lock for Malone Hall locker (Virginia violinists and violists only) Ø a rock stop for cellists and bassists (These need to be brought to each performance.) Ø a folding music stand for home practice and performances outside of school Ø a cleaning rag in your case (Cellists and bassists need one at home and one at school.) Ø a pencil and a highlighter or two Good websites/catalogs that have high quality supplies at deep discount prices are: Southwest Strings (swstrings.com), Shar Products (sharmusic.com), and Gliga (violinslover.com). If parents cannot supply the needed materials for whatever reason, please contact Mrs. Wilcox as soon as possible. Schmitt Music delivers to the Virginia and Gilbert schools once a week. If you pay over the phone or send them a check, it will save you a trip to the store.

4 Attendance/Credit Policy Orchestra is a full year class. Any student who drops out of orchestra after the first week will receive no credit for the class and will receive a failing grade. Any student having more than 20 non-medical absences will lose all credit and be given a failing grade unless the time is made up after school. (VHS only policy regarding last minute assemblies: If an announcement is made at VHS after period one that there will be an assembly the next day in Virginia during period one, students must make arrangements with Mrs. Wilcox if they wish to attend the assembly. If a student does not make arrangements with Mrs. Wilcox, they must attend class as usual.) Concert attire Students will need black dress shoes, black socks/hosiery, black pants or black tea-length or floor length skirt, and a white long-sleeved shirt with a button front and collar. This attire is to be worn to every concert and at our competition. If parents cannot supply the concert clothing, please contact Mrs. Wilcox as soon as possible. 5 Behavior criteria Ø Be on time. Virginia students are allowed one missed bus (tardy). All subsequent infractions earn an automatic hour of detention. Ø No food, beverages, candy or gum is allowed in the Gilbert or Virginia Music Departments at any time. Ø Bring needed materials to class each day. (instrument, 3-ring binder, pencil, assignments) Ø Follow directions cheerfully, the first time they are given. Remember, delayed obedience is disobedience. Ø Respect others who are speaking. Raise your hand and wait to be called on. Ø Display appropriate social skills. Ø Respect your classmate s and the school s property. Playing any instrument other than your own will earn you an automatic detention. Ø Remain on task and allow others to remain on task. Ø Virginia violinists and violists who have a Malone Hall locker must keep it clean. Ø No cell phones are allowed in Orchestra, including field trips. Ø Orderly conduct is expected from the Virginia students on the bus to and from Gilbert and in the hallways. Rewards for good behavior: Praise and special privileges. Consequences for poor behavior: 1. A verbal warning (ZIP slips for Gilbert students) 2. Loss of all or some participation points, 3. Phone call or to parents, 4. Detention, 5. A conference with the Principal, 6. Removal from class. Severe infractions such as fighting, verbal abuse and destruction of property will result in immediate removal to the Office. Seating Students will not have to audition for their seats, or defend them in a challenge. Instead we will rotate seats weekly to ensure that each player has ample opportunity to experience being both a leader and a follower. Exceptions to that rule are students who must sit in the front at all times due to special needs (such as vision, or hearing). Violinists will rotate between first violin (melody) and second violin (harmony) at different times during the year.
