2 Dear Parents, The TBMS 6 th grade staff would like to welcome you to this exciting time in your child s life where they transition to middle school. Except for infancy, more changes occur in ten to fourteen year old children than at any other time of life. They are experiencing changes in the way they learn, feel, look, and deal with other people. It is a time of testing limits, trying on new identities, and changing friends. Many children stumble before they succeed in middle school. Be prepared for an occasional detention notice, missed assignment, or low grade. Remember, no one in later life ever asks to see a middle school transcript or behavior record. We welcome the challenge of teaching and mentoring your child during this critical time of growth and development. Communication is key to help your child positively transition. We encourage you to frequently visit our school website. It is an excellent resource to keep you informed of school related items. How parents can help prepare for a positive transition Explore TBMS Website Model the use of a daily planner for business or personal commitments. Your child will use an Agenda planner in 6 th grade. Have your child read at least 30 minutes a day. Establish a daily communication time at home. Establish an organizational system for daily school work (binder, homework folder, backpack). Encourage your child to ask teachers about unclear assignments or concepts.

3 Curriculum Language Arts Reading: Literary Elements: character, plot, setting, point of view, conflict, and theme Literary Devices: simile, metaphor, personification, alliteration, onomatopoeia, imagery, and symbolism Literature: 40 Book Reading Challenge in the following genres: poetry, myths/fables, classics, realistic fiction, historical fiction, science fiction, fantasy, mystery, informational, biography/autobiography and chapter book choice. Literary Criticism and Recognizing Persuasive Techniques Word Meaning, Context Clues, Fact/Opinion, Evidence/Conclusion, and Compare/Contrast Vocabulary: Greek and Latin roots Grammar: Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking. Writing: 6+1 Traits of Writing: Ideas/Content, Organization, Voice, Word Choice, Sentence Fluency, and Conventions Writing Process: Prewrite, First Draft, Revise, Edit, and Final Draft Process Essays/Modes of Writing: Narrative, Argumentative and Informative. Citing text evidence in different forms of writing. Mathematics By the end of 6 th grade students will have mastered: Understanding ratio concepts and use of ratios for problem solving including percentages Multiplication and division of fractions by fractions Computation with multi-digit numbers including common factors and multiples Compute and understand relationships with rational numbers including negative integers Apply arithmetic to algebraic expressions Understand and solve one variable equations and inequalities Study and analyze relationships between dependent and independent variables Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving area, surface area and volume Develop understanding of statistical variability including data collection and calculations Summary and describe statistical distributions including graphing (Based on Common Core Standards CA adoption 2010, implementation in progress) Family Involvement Help your child see the real world use of math. TBMS Environmental Education Field Trip Spring 2016 Mission Statement: To offer an inclusive outdoor education program that provides students of all academic, social, and economic levels field and handson experience with sixth grade core curriculum standards. How parents can get involved Attend monthly PTC meetings and or volunteer at PTC events Attend monthly SBLT meetings Chaperone dances Honors Celebrations Help with the following fundraisers: Box Tops save and turn in Jog-A-Thon Support TBMS by shopping at Amazon Smile and choosing Twelve Bridges Middle School Parent Teacher Club as your donation recipant. Twelve Bridges Middle School Mission Statement The staff at Twelve Bridges Middle School, in cooperation with the students, parents, and community, will provide students with a safe and supportive learning environment in which to foster a culture of academic excellence and discipline in addition to life-long learning. Our goal is for our students to not only become responsible and well rounded individuals, but also to become better citizens.

5 Homework & Grades TBMS students can expect one and one-half to two hours of homework every night. Homework is an integral part of a student s grade. Families can assist their student by checking the student agenda daily for homework assignments and by verifying each teacher s assignment calendar at Grades are based on the completion of in-class work, homework, projects, quizzes and tests. Missing work results in a zero, which quickly lowers a grade. Grades are computed as percentages as follows. A % B 80 89% C 70 79% D 60 69% F 59% and below Progress reports are issued to students multiple times a semester. Progress reports are also available through Schoology.com. Report cards are mailed home each semester to students and their families. Please update your address in the main office if you move during the school year. Promotion Requirements Students meeting the following requirements for the current grade year will be recommended for advancement to the next grade: Cumulative overall grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 ( C ) or better. Cumulative GPA of 2.0 ( C ) or better in language arts. Cumulative GPA of 2.0 ( C ) or better in mathematics. Parents will be contacted at the following times if their child is at risk of retention: at the end of the first six weeks of school, at the end of the first semester, mid-way through second semester and at the end of the second semester. Progress reports are available 24/7 on Schoology.com. Parent/Teacher Technology Tools Tools to keep parents informed of student s progress: New this year All teachers will be using Schoology for their gradebooks and teacher websites. Parent Schoology access codes will be handed out at the beginning of the school year. Download the Schoology app for your smart phone. Students will need to be able to type a minimum of three pages in a single sitting. Create an account at to begin working on those typing skills this summer. (Common Core Standards)

7 Student Dress Code Twelve Bridges students are expected to wear clothing that is appropriate to the school environment. Clothing should be comfortable, clean and in good taste. Students who violate the dress code will be required to change into clothing available in the office and will be given a Detention Notice, further violations will result in Administrative Referrals. 1. Shoes must be worn at all times. 2. Clothing must be free of references to alcohol, drugs, gangs, violence, bigotry or sexual connotations. No gang-associated colors or symbols are allowed. 3. Clothing must not expose the midsection or underclothing. Girls tops may not be low-cut. 4. Tattoos are not allowed; body piercing deemed as a distraction by the administration is not allowed. 5. Students shall NOT wear articles of clothing, jewelry or accessories, which, in the opinion of the teachers and/or administration, may disrupt school activities or could pose a threat to the physical well-being or safety of the students or others. 6. All shirts must have sleeves. For our female students, no bra straps can be exposed or visible. Off the shoulder shirts can be worn only if there is an appropriate shirt underneath that meets dress code. No bra straps can be exposed or visible. 7. Students may wear pants only one size larger than their waist size no sagging. 8. Students may wear shirts only one size larger than their regular shirt size. 9. Shorts and skirts deemed inappropriate are not allowed. The minimum length of shorts and skirts is to the length of the little finger. Any leggings, tights, etc. must be covered by another garment at least as long as the length of the little finger (6 inch or longer inseam is a good rule of thumb). 10. Belts must fit students and be contained in belt loops no hanging belts or wallet chains. 11. All clothing must be in good repair. No holes, shredded or fraying pants or shorts will be allowed. 12. Only official Titan caps, hats or beanies are allowed on campus. Titan hats and hoods on sweatshirts may only be worn on the blacktop and field area; they are not allowed in buildings. No bandanas are allowed. 13. Hair must be in the natural color hues. Any hair colors that are deemed a distraction by the administration are not allowed. Students violating this rule will be sent home until the hair color is corrected. 14. Pajamas are not to be worn to school at any time unless it is a designated Spirit Day. Helpful Hint: Keep dress code in mind while back to school shopping.
