1 Project Title: The Best Foundation PBL in Career Pathway Courses - Project Template Course(s): Site Layout Teacher(s): Mr. Joshua Parmley Date: Teacher(s) (s): Instructional Time: class period of minutes Grade Level:9-12 School: Wayne County Area Technology Center Principal: Mr. John Kinnett Project s Driving Question: What is the strongest and most economical foundation wall to construct? Project Description/Scenario: You are a Site Supervisor for Southern Tier Housing. The Wayne ATC is looking to hire you to build another storage compartment to their existing storage garage. The compartment will be 20 x20. They know what they want to do framing wise, but do not know what the best foundation would be for the addition. They do want the foundation walls 2 tall. There will be a 20 foundation wall in the back of the compartment and one on the side. Determine what type of foundation is the strongest and most economical to erect. Students will be looking into concrete poured foundations and cement block You will present findings to the Wayne County ATC. You will be required to communicate progress throughout the project. Each member must be able to document evidence of their contributions to the team and communicate as a whole throughout the project. Your team will research and find out which foundation is most suitable for this type of structure. The groups will be comparing the differences in block and concrete -analyze of pros and cons of various types of foundations and materials. -analyzing time, cost, and labor. Your report to the Wayne County ATC shall include a written report and oral presentation involving media. SREB.org 1

2 Career and Technical Education: Essential Standards: Site Layout and Foundations Program of Studies. 4-A Discuss basic properties of concrete B) Identify different soil conditions and the effects on footing design C) Name important structural components that can be fabricated from formwork and concrete. 21 st Century Skills Develop a proposal in which you identify the pros and cons of foundation materials and present your recommendation of the best foundation process for the project described. You will present your solution to a committee comprised of building contractors and Mr. Kinnett. Literacy: CORE STANDARDS WHST conduct short as well as more sustained research projects to answer a question (including a self-generated question) or solve a problem; narrow or broaden the inquiry when appropriate; synthesize multiple sources on the subject, demonstrating understanding of the subject under investigation Math: Core Standards AA-001 Demonstrate addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Questions on lesson. Reflection. Materials cost lesson. Students will make list of materials needed to erect their foundation. Students will determine cost to build their foundation. Review Presentation Skills. Lesson. What makes a proper presentation? Week 3 Student will construct a presentation about their chosen foundation with pros and cons listed. Involving strength and materials cost. Final revisions for presentation. Present to classmates. Final presentation will be made for committee. Week 4 8
