1 Marking and Feedback Policy At Ark Franklin Primary Academy we believe that high quality, consistent and timely marking and feedback enhance children s learning by engaging the children as active participants and by providing personalised help and guidance. 1. Aims: We mark children s work and offer feedback in order to: further our pupils learning; show that we value their work, and encourage them to do likewise; boost self-esteem and aspirations, through use of praise and encouragement; give a clear guidance on how far they have come in their learning, and what the next steps are; promote self-assessment, identify their difficulties and offer guidance share expectations; gauge their understanding, and identify any misconceptions; provide a basis both for summative and formative assessment and inform individual tracking of progress; to inform tomorrow s planning. 2. Principles of marking and feedback: 2.1 The process of marking and offering feedback should be a positive one. 2.2 The marking should always address the lesson s WALT (We Are Learning To), success criteria and/or a child s KPI targets. 2.3 Comments should be appropriate to the age and ability of the child. 2.4 Children should self and peer assess. 2.5 The best marking and feedback is the dialogue that takes place between teacher and pupil while the task is being completed. This is indicated by VF. 3. General Guidance to teachers Assessment and feedback during the lesson 3.1 All pieces of work will include a WALT and date (success criteria should be clearly displayed throughout the lesson).

2 3.2 The teacher will introduce the WALT and success criteria at the beginning of the lesson (unless they generate it together as part of the lesson), returning to it at intervals with reference to individual children's progress: drawing the children together to address a misconception or move learning on where progress is good. 3.3 The children will be encouraged to give verbal feedback on their own (and peers ) progress towards the WALT, success criteria and, where appropriate, their personal targets throughout the lesson and again during the plenary. 3.4 At least once per week during English, children will engage in peer assessment or self-assessment, marking their own or a peer s work against the WALT and success criteria. Assessment & feedback after the lesson 3.5 The teacher will mark against the WALT and success criteria after every lesson (unless peer or selfassessment has taken place). 3.6 At least twice per week, marking of writing should include comments indicating children s next steps, addressing their personal targets. Written comments should be neat and legible. Teachers should use the following guidance: An area in children s work where they have achieved the WALT and/or success criteria can be highlighted in pink. Any written comments relating to success should be written in pink. An area for development should be highlighted in green. Any written comments relating to an area of development should be written in green. These comments are focused and should help the child in closing the gap between what they have achieved and what they could have achieved. Useful Closing the Gap comments are: - A reminder prompt e.g. What else could you say here? - A scaffolded prompt- e.g. What was the dog s tail doing?, The dog was angry so he..., Describe the expression on the dog s face. - An example prompt e.g. Choose one of these or your own: He ran around in circles looking for the rabbit / The dog couldn t believe his eyes 3.7 Work should be marked prior to the next lesson. 3.8 At least once per week children should be given the opportunity to respond to marking, this should be identified in weekly planning. Please refer to our child-friendly marking poster below for all marking symbols.
