2 1 Assessment Tasks for Block 4 Block 4 Notes Each lesson during the blocks will consist of some whiteboard work by the lecturer and some associated work which will be completed by the students during class time. This work will be done on worksheets that will be given out during the block. These worksheets will be collected at the end of the block for marking. The worksheets for Block 4 are due on the second last day of Block 4. The mark for these worksheets will make up 20% of the total mark for the course. Mathematical and Statistical Exercises There are some exercises in the next section of these notes. These exercises are on percentages and statistics. These exercises are worth 10% of the total mark for the course and are due on the last day of Block 4. Written Statistics Report The written Statistics Report consists of a report. All the questions should be answered and as this is a report it is expected that questions will be answered in sentence form. It is also expected that students will use graphs and tallies to display their data. The outline for this assignment can be found in section 3 of this handout. This assignment should be done by each student seperately and it is expected that each student will hand in an assignment that is entirely their own work. The statistics report is worth 15% of the total mark for the course and is due on 12th of November. REMEMBER: If you get stuck or need help, don't forget to ring your maths teacher. 3 2 Mathematical and Statistical Exercises These exercises form a part of your assessment tasks. Please do all exercises listed. The due date for this assessment task is the last day of Block 4. Finding fractions of quantities (a) 3 4 of 600 (b) 1 5 of 40 (c) 3 10 of 27 (d) Answer the following: of 4000 (a) If 35% of students liked to play tennis, what percentage didn't like playing tennis? (b) Jane got 12 for her test, what is this mark as a percentage? 15 (c) There are students at Macquarie University. If 65% of them are female, how many female students are there at Macquarie University? How many male students? (d) Joe has to pay 45% tax, his annual income is $56,000. The table below shows data collected from some of the students. Use the data to answer the questions following the table. 6 3 Statistics Report There are two sections of this report. The first section is worth 10% of your total mark and the second section is worth 5% of your total mark. Section 1 You have been asked to write a submission for funding for an area of need in your community. Collect statistical material to support your submission and present that material in a format appropriate for a report. It should be at least one page long. You dont need to write an entire submission, just the statistical part of it. Make sure that you present some of your information, or a summary of your information, in graphical form. This means using some of the techniques we went over in block to present information as graphs. You may choose any issue that is of interest to you. Some suggestions for possible areas of investigation are: ffl Indigenous Health ffl Indigenous Education ffl Indigenous Employment ffl Indigenous Incarceration These are simply suggestions, you may choose anything of interest to you. And if you do choose one of the above, you can take a smaller part of it, for example, Diabetes in Indigenous Australia. Please ask if you have any questions at all!! Section 2 Collect a small amount of your own data. This can be from any source, it does not have to relate to Section 1 of this report, it can be about something completely different from what you have done in Section 1. Make sure that you do not attach any names to your data since you need to respect confidentiality. Summarise this data, using the techniques we used in Block 4. Present some of this information graphically. Please include the raw data in your assignment. This section doesn't need to be longer than one or two pages. Look at the statistics exercises in the homework for ideas about how to do this. GOOD LUCK!! 6
