1 Title of the Course: Advanced Reading and Writing Skills II Course-No: 14İNÖ118 Course type: Lecture Hours-Practice/Week: 3-0 Status: Compulsory Lecturer: Contact: Language of Instruction: English Assistant Professor Dr. Salim Razı Web: Tel: ext: 3661 Fax: Semester: 2 nd Semester /1 st Year Spring ECTS Credits: 6 1 Course description: This course aims to develop advanced skills in critical analysis, close reading and composition through lectures, discussion and pair work activities in which students analyse and evaluate materials from the discipline of English Language Teaching. Readings might come from academic journals, research reports, reference books, theses and dissertations which enable them to develop and increase vocabulary in an academic context. Therefore, students will be able to comprehend contrasting viewpoints and to predict and identify main ideas and to decode inter-sentential clues. It also aims to equip students with intensive and extensive reading habits which will then foster students reading and writing speeds. Critical thinking skills such as synthesizing information or analysing a problem as well as reacting on the basis of evaluation are fostered. Such sub-skills of reading are employed by the students in their writings. Besides, students are expected to analyse different types of writings (e.g. expository paragraph, descriptive paragraph, narrative paragraph, etc.); build up writing skills emphasizing the organization, coherence, and cohesion and such sub-skills as summarizing, outlining, and paraphrasing. The use of spelling and punctuation conventions as well as non-alphabetic symbol use will be practised as well. Moreover, this course also aims to teach academic writing to students who need to present and defend their own points of view clearly and persuasively. Students will learn to recognize and emulate the many strategies, structures, vocabulary, and styles appropriate to formal writing, and they practise the process method by producing several increasingly refined drafts of an academic paper which deals with English Language Teaching. Students mainly work to master the norms for citing and attributing data from print and other sources, and to observe the methods of acknowledging the research findings of others. Relatively, students will be familiar with reviewing literature, parts of an academic paper, headings in APA style, writing a list of references, and presenting tables and figures in their papers. Students of Advanced Reading and Writing II course are expected to employ the skills that they practise in Advanced Reading and Writing I and II courses. Thus, in the spring term, all students need to work on their written assignment throughout the semester. In this respect, students are expected to write an academic paper which constitutes about 1500 words on any topic they select in relation with ELT. Throughout the term, students will be provided with peer and lecturer feedback on their assignments. Teaching method: Prerequisites: Teaching aids: Lectures, tutorials. Capability of advanced reading comprehension; awareness of academic writing rules, and APA in-text citation rules. Course book, PowerPoint presentations, sample academic texts.

2 Assessment method: Attendance Policy: Registration for course: Required Registration for examination: Remarks: Assignment requirements: There are no pen and paper examinations. The evaluation of the students will be based on written assignments. To succeed the course, each student needs to write an academic paper at an approximate length of words, excluding references. In addition, each student must provide feedback to three peers at the end of the semester. Writing the paper will account for the final examination (60%) whereas providing feedback will account for midterm examination (40%). To enable matching students in accordance with their writing proficiency, students are expected to submit a pilot assignment of words at the beginning of the semester. The pilot assignment will not have a direct contribution to the students scores. Students cannot learn without consistent effort throughout the semester. Attendance will be expected in all sessions. Students are required to read the related chapters before the class. Attendance will be taken and recorded in all class sessions. A minimum amount of 70% attendance to the lecturers is mandatory. Please remember that if you are unable to attend more than 4 weeks, you will automatically fail. There are no pen and paper examinations. However, to succeed the course, students need to submit several drafts and the final version of their written assignment in addition to peer review sessions. Students need to enrol into related digital Turnitin class to maintain these tasks. This lecture is suitable for students at the department of foreign language teaching with the ambition of developing written academic skills in English. Assignments must be on A-4 paper. Assignments must have 2,54 cm margins on all sides. Assignments must be written with double spacing. There should not be any information that might reveal your identity on the assignments including name, number and class. All assignments must be turned in on time. Late assignments will not be taken into consideration. The drafts and the final version of your assignment must be submitted online through Turnitin. 4 ASSIGNMENT SUBMISSION GUIDELINES THROUGH TURNITIN Please, follow the instructions below to submit your assignments online through Turnitin. 4 CLASS ID AND PASSWORD Class ID: Enrollment password: ARAW2017 ENROLLING IN A CLASS You must enroll in your class (ARAW Spring) before you can begin using Turnitin. To do this, use the class ID and enrollment password above. To create you account, visit and follow the instructions below. HOW TO CREATE A NEW USER PROFILE AND ENROLL IN YOUR CLASS 1. Click the Create Account link to the left of the Sign in button on the Turnitin homepage. 2. Click on the student link from the Create a New Turnitin Account screen. 3. Enter your class ID and enrollment password in the appropriate fields.

5 4. Enter your first and last names and the address you would like associated with your Turnitin account. This will be your user name Enter and re-enter the password you would like to use as your Turnitin login password. 6. Select a secret question using the secret question pull down menu, enter an answer. 7. Review the Turnitin user agreement and click to agree and finalize user profile creation. 8. Once you register, you will have an access to your account and see a page like this:

6 6 9. Click on the name of your class (ARAW Spring). 10. Click on submit and select the appropriate assignment. 11. For paper item submission method, please choose single file upload. 12. Your name will appear automatically. Please, write the title of your paper and continue by clicking Choose from this computer. At this step, it is also possible to upload files from Dropbox and Google Drive. 13. Do not forget to click Upload to submit your assignment. 14. To complete your submission, you need to click Confirm to indicate that this is the file you would like to submit. 15. Finally, if your submission is successful you will receive the following notification. If you do not receive such a notification, it means that there is something wrong with your submission.
