Keen to extend yourself in an area of passion? If you re in Year 9, this day is for you! We have carefully selected a group of highly qualified professionals who are set to broaden your experience of some exciting disciplines. You can self- select two intensive workshops and explore your chosen fields in depth. The workshops are delivered above grade level, are practical and are set to inspire. 2 MORNING WORKSHOPS Computing: Game Maker Do you want to learn how to make awesome computer games? This UNSW workshop will teach you how to make your own customised arcade games. During our time together, we will analyse and play many games and then we will show you how to design these exciting games, using Game Maker's powerful GML (Game Maker Language). By the end of the workshop, you will be equipped with the skills to make your very own personalised games that you can show off to your friends! This workshop does not require any programming experience. Presenter: Joseph Hilsberg (UNSW Computing Club) NumberWorks: When Maths Gets Down to Business How can maths be used to solve problems and contribute to society? What role can a Christian play in using their mathematical intelligence to serve others in God s world? In this workshop, students will be able to explore the usefulness of Mathematical modelling in answering questions in regard to population growth, predicting future events based on the collection of data, managing and assessment of risk and seeking to make good decisions based on strong mathematical thinking. This workshop will be a mix of theory and application in emphasising the importance of the significant contribution mathematics makes to our society. This workshop is for students who love problem solving and love doing maths! Presenter: Pete Muddle Drama: Physical Theatre and Stage Fighting Do you want to learn to choreograph a believable stage fight? To be able to wow your friends with trick falls, slaps and punches? Then this Physical Theatre workshop is for you! Come along and watch, learn and participate in the skills of storytelling without words! The art of mime, movement and gesture are explored in this exciting workshop. Presenter: Australian Theatre for Young People Quick as a Flash: Photonics What do lasers, broadband and Harry Potter s cloak have in common? They all use light to make extraordinary things happen! In this workshop, those in the know from Sydney University, will take you into the work of optics. You ll learn about how bending and reflecting light works for communication, sound systems, sensors, LED and lasers and yes, Harry Potter s skills of invisibility. There will be interaction, prizes and loads of fun. Presenter: CUDOS University of Sydney Speaking Up: Giving a Christian Talk I have an awesome message but how do I communicate it? If you are a youth leader or are inspired to communicate God s message through the spoken word, this training workshop will give you the tools you need to create change. Carmelina Read has been giving talks at Christian conventions for many years. Not only can she help you work out what to put in your talk but how to package it, to help people to passionately engage with what you have to say. Presenter: Carmelina Read

3 6 Speedway Science Are you interested in electricity and engines? Do you like the idea of exploring the way in which things go? You ll love this workshop. Not only will you learn about the key elements of a motor, you will be given batteries, motors, fans, wheels, hot glue all the essentials to build your own mini car. Then the race will be on! Hope to see you there! Presenter: Jacob Strickling 7 8 Film Making Have an exciting vision for a film project? This workshop is for you. We will explore narrative structure so your story is interesting and engaging whilst discussing the 'language of film' so you know how to make your work cinematic. To give you some guidance, we will analyse moments from films which illustrate how to make your story-telling compelling and explore the elements of movies such as costuming, set design, music, sound, dialogue, editing etc. By the end of this workshop you will be equipped with the skills to create your very own short film. Presenter: Nick Harding. Philosophy: A Crash Course in Thinking about Thinking Are you a deep thinker? Are you the kind of person who likes to see things beneath the surface? If so, this workshop will be to your liking. The course will examine Socractic Method, mathematical logic, the nexus of perception and reasoning and New Atheism. We will engage with culture and find that philosophy is essentially important for creating the conditions where young people can effectively critique their world and become the change makers of society. Presenter: Michael Street AFTERNOON WORKSHOPS 1 2 Theatre Sports It s time to let your hair down and explore your creativity! This workshop will focus on the power of improvisation to present new ideas and worlds. Teaching will be based around drama games, so as to encourage both your artistic thinking and collaboration. Then, you will be involved in a range of team- based theatre sports. The result? This will be a fun filled, loud, energetic and hilarious workshop where anything can happen if you open your mind to it! Presenter: Heather Pitt Paint Power Joan Miro once said, I start from something considered dead and arrive at a world. And when I put a title on it, it becomes even more alive. What do you see in the world around you? What can you cultivate with your imagination? Using stenciling, letters, numbers and paint, this workshop will allow you to create your own artwork. As you do, you will be guided in the way you might combine various elements to produce your creative vision. The sky s the limit! Presenter: Cath Rose

How can you best understand others and help them to understand you? How can you inspire them to action? This workshop will give you loads of skills to help get the best out of yourself and others. Our presenter regularly works with some of Australia s biggest businesses to help their leaders to motivate others. Come along and see how you might be inspired! Ray Partridge is top- notch when it comes to guiding students in the generation of their own compositions. He can help you use effectively use your technology in writing melodies, producing scores, learning effects, syncing music with visuals and producing arrangements. Presenter: Ray Partridge. In Defence of Women: What Every Girl Needs to Know Have you wondered what you might do if you were attacked? Felt intimidated by a group of guys? Perhaps found yourself in trouble or felt unsafe? Here is a workshop with a difference. This selfdefence workshop is for girls only. It will teach you what to do when danger comes knocking and even better, how to avoid being in danger to begin with. Black- belt instructors will teach you essential skills so that you can feel more confident in every situation. Do you love the world of Mr. Darcy and the Bennets? This is your chance to take a look at the stories of Austen to uncover the way in which she saw her world. Chivalry, womanhood, game playing and rule making will all be under the microscope. Ultimately, the way in which women lived and loved will be unearthed in this wonderful workshop!
