2 LEVEL 5 (B2 - VANTAGE) DUEF B2 Program for one term Organization The course, designed for students with vantage and upper intermediate level, are divided into two units: Unit 1 : language (coefficient 8) Unit 2 : culture (coefficient 4) Being able to read and understand long and complex documents from the media and literature written in standard French quite easily. Being able to identify the different points of view. Being able to express oneself quite fluently and quite clearly when in interaction or in continuous speech on complex topics. Being able to write expository and argumentative texts (language must be clear, style must be appropriate and text must be well-structured). Courses are based on the CEFRL. Use of authentic material. Particular emphasis on written expression and reading comprehension. Further of knowledge in French culture and other fields. Introduction to working methods and exercises used in French universities. Other activities Students have access to a multimedia resource center where they can work on their own. Tutoring. Please note that the French system of marking ranges from 0 to 20. An average mark of 10 out of 20 is the minimum required to pass. Unit 1 Language (coefficient 8) o Reading comprehension (coefficient 2) o Listening comprehension (coefficient 2) o Written expression (coefficient 2) o Conversation (coefficient 2) Unit 2 Culture - (coefficient 4) - 1 compulsory project on cultural activities + 3 subjects to be chosen among the following ones. Please note that the list can change according to the semester. 3 o **Poetry workshop (coefficient 1) o *Press workshop (coefficient 1) o *Contemporary French civilization ( coefficient 1) o *French History (coefficient 1) Each unit can be obtained separately and saved till the diploma is completed. The two units compensate for one another. Inside each unit, subjects can compensate for one another but they cannot be obtained separately except for the cultural activities. For this subject, it is not necessary to write another project if the first mark obtained is at least 10 out of 20 but the student has to attend the class again. UNIT 1 LANGUAGE (COEFFICIENT 8) - 5 COMPULSORY SUBJECTS Reading comprehension: (coefficient 2) 2 hours / week General and detailed study of articles (500 to 600 words) or several texts. Study of vocabulary, grammar and syntax. Study of the general and detailed structure of these articles Re-phrasing of the main ideas of the articles Subjects : social facts 2 written exams (2 hours) - French unilingual dictionary can be used. General and detailed comprehension of the text. Ability to identify the cultural understatements and the authors intentions. Listening comprehension: (coefficient 2) 2 hours / week + 1 hour in a language laboratory Training for the oral comprehension of about 8 minute long documents (+ taking notes). More training in the language laboratory based on several short documents. s Short documents: training to DELF B2, various audio documents (from 1 to 3 minutes). Documents lasting about 8 minutes: authentic documents related to social facts. : 8 minutes 2 written exams 1 hour each (2 exercises) based on the 8 minute documents (3 general listenings). Dictionary and mobile phone strictly forbidden. Exercise 1(2/3 of the mark): answering open or closed questions.

4 Exercise 2 (1/3 of the mark): summary of the main ideas based on personal notes. General and detailed comprehension of the document ; Ability to identify the general structure of the document, the connection of the ideas and the author s intention. Composition / grammar: (coefficient 2) 4 hours /week - Composition : 2 hours /week Study of different types of document: narration, articles Identification of the writing strategies used by the author depending on his intention: words selected, structure of the text, ideas. Writing exercises related to the documents studied in class.. Various types of texts are studied: narrative texts, expository texts, argumentative texts. A particular emphasis is put on the last type. : 2 written exams (2 hours each) - French unilingual dictionary can be used. Exam 1 (50% of the final mark) (2 hours) : expository text ( 400/450 words) Exam 2 (50% of the final mark) (3 hours) : argumentative text ( 400/450 words) Understanding of the subject and adequate treatment of it (No «off the point»). Coherence and quality of the writing: organization of the text, quality of the vocabulary, grammar and structure, selection of connecting words, accuracy of the ideas and examples in argumentative texts. - Grammar : 2 hours /week Study of examples: texts, paragraphs, sentences. Study of grammatical rules (syntax, morphology, spelling ). Various exercises. : (not definite) Tenses, moods, conjugation Past tense Present participle, gerundive, verbal adjective Complex sentences Link words And other points for full time students: No particular assessment. Grammar is assessed through «composition». Knowledge of grammatical rules studied in class. Ability to transpose these rules into a new context.

Discussions, role plays, oral presentations Exercises to practice and correct intonation. Continuous assessment throughout the semester (50% of the final mark) : oral presentations and participation in class. Final exam (50% of the final mark): 15 minutes discussion with a jury on a subject picked up at random. - Quality of the pronunciation, fluency of the speech ; - Quality and adequacy of the language ; - General speech structure ; - Ability to answer within the 15 minutes ; - Ability to interest the jury ; - Adequacy and quality of the ideas. UNIT 2 CULTURE - (COEFFICIENT 4) - 4 COMPULSORY SUBJECTS: CULTURAL PROJECT + 3 SUBJECTS TO BE CHOSEN AMONG THE FOLLOWING SUBJECTS NB: SOME OF THE SUBJECTS CAN BE CHOSEN ONLY AT ONE SEMESTER (FIRST OR SECOND) Cultural activities (coefficient 1): 1 hour /week Students must attend cultural activities individually or in small groups : conferences, films, visits A list of these activities is given: the students must choose some of them and get the teacher s agreement for the others. Each student must report regularly his/her experience orally to the class. A final document (report), including a minimum of 6 cultural activities, is to be given in at the end of the semester. (Use of WORD software compulsory). Title of the document: Activités culturelles. List of activities depending on local festivities.

6 Continuous assessment throughout the semester: 1/3 of the final mark: oral presentations in front of the group (5 minutes, no interaction) without any documents. Then answers to questions from other students (interaction). 1/3 of the final mark: participation in class. 1/3 of the final mark: writing of a report including a minimum of 6 activities of 1 or 2 pages (use of Word compulsory) with illustrations. Participation in class ; Oral presentation ; The final document (the report) is compulsory to get the diploma. History of French literature : (coefficient 1) 2 hours/week Study of the main literary genres and French literary movements through guided reading of excerpts written by main authors. 7 One written exam: a series of questions to analyze a text not studied in class, written by one of the authors mentioned in the program. (2 hours) Dictionaries and mobile phones strictly forbidden. One oral final exam : questions on one of the texts studied in class (preparation: 15 minutes, oral exam: 15 minutes). Understanding and analysis of the text ; Quality and accuracy of explanations ; Quality of language. Contemporary French literature: (coefficient 1) 2 hours /week Study of French literature and culture through literary works either French or written in French (the whole book) from authors of the XXth and XXIst centuries. Study of reading strategies. Comparison between text and image through the study of films based on literary works studied in class. Training to various types of oral and written university exercises for literary analysis. French contemporary civilization: (coefficient 1) 2hours/week -1st semester Getting further knowledge of France in the XXIst century. Developing abilities in intercultural and linguistic comprehension. Daily life in France : traditions, festivals, annual events Main current events concerning economy, culture, politics, contemporary history, institutions. French, European and international news. One written exam (50% of the final mark) (2 hours) : questions on subjects studied in class and analysis of documents. Dictionaries and mobile phones strictly forbidden. o One final oral exam (50% of the final mark) of 20 minutes: questions on subjects studied in class and analysis of authentic documents. Knowledge on subjects studied in class ; Historical knowledge linked with current events Ability to analyze social, political, cultural facts and explain them referring to history. Coherence of speech/text, quality of the language and use of an appropriate vocabulary. French History: (coefficient 1) 2 hours / week -1st semester Understanding the French Revolution beyond the clichés, the radical changes it has brought both in law, politics and in the daily life of the French. Understanding who are the main actors and their motivations. Understanding its failures as well as the different interpretations that historians have made. : The century of revolutions: France from 1815 to After a brief overview of the main events, we will investigate the period by subjects (eg. The Monarchy and the Revolution, the Revolution and the Church...) The course is based on the analysis of written and iconographic as well as many visuals. One written exam about questions studied in class and analysis of documents. Dictionaries and mobile phones strictly forbidden. One final oral exam of about 20 minutes: questions studied in class and analysis of documents. Ability to analyze facts and events studied in class, to work out causes and consequences, to link the different events of the studied period. Coherence of the oral presentation, quality of the language and use of an accurate vocabulary. The 5 th Republic (coefficient 1) : 2 hours/week -2nd semester

9 Getting knowledge on the 5th Republic and its specificities. Getting a better understanding of the current trends through the study of contemporary history. (not definite) Origins of the 5th Republic and specific aspects of its constitution. Executive and legislative powers, balance between powers. Executive power: Presidents since 1958 (powers, original features of the various presidencies, social and economic contexts ) Government and Prime Minister The «cohabitations». Legislative power : The Parliament (composition, powers ) The «Conseil Constitutionnel» The main political parties, Caricaturing politicians in France. One written exam (50% of the final mark) (2hours) Dictionaries and mobile phones strictly forbidden.. One final oral exam (50% of the final mark) (20 minutes): questions studied in class and analysis of authentic material. Knowledge of the specificities of the 5th Republic ; Ability to analyze present and past documents. Coherence of the oral presentation, quality of the language and use of an accurate vocabulary. Poetry workshop: (coefficient 1)-2nd semester Reading, Declaiming, Writing French poetry Three lessons are also attended by French students taking a Licence in French as a Foreign Language. Study of French poetry and songs of the XXth and XXIst centuries through creative activities : Reading and listening in order to understand. Declaiming: in order to highlight the beauty of the texts. Writing in order to use specific techniques and play with images, sounds and meanings of the language of poetry. For each lesson: work in groups on several poems or songs on a main theme, written by contemporary authors. Discovery of French poetry. «Words in space». «Surréalisme» or the impact of words and images. Structure at the basis of creativity. Play with sounds. The city: bring your own photos of Poitiers. Poetry and militant songs. Dates (8 lessons of 3 hours): to be determined.

10 Continuous assessment throughout the semester. Final exam: Making of a «livre-objet» including an anthology of poems. Participation in class ; Accurate treatment of the subject. Press workshop (S1) (coefficient 1) / 1st semester 3 hours /week (24 hours) : Press workshop (1 st semester) Survey of the French press diversity: national daily newspapers, local daily newspapers, magazines. A better understanding of today s France through the study of French newspapers (Social, political and cultural life) Working on the four main skills in class: written and oral comprehension, oral and written expression. This course, which is also attended by French students taking a M.A. in French as a Foreign Language, is a good opportunity to discuss different points of views according to each culture. Continuous assessment throughout the semester (50% of the final mark) : presentation of common reports to the whole class, writing of an article. One final written exam: (3 hours), analysis of documents. French unilingual dictionaries can be used. Participation in class. Understanding the news and the various points of views, Identification of written strategies, Quality of the written language. Unit rules The different units compensate for one another.
