1 COURSE SYLLABUS DMTH Introductory Algebra COURSE NUMBER AND TITLE: DMTH ZA - Introductory Algebra COURSE (CATALOG) DESCRIPTION: This course is a study of geometry and elementary algebra involving real numbers, algebraic expressions, equations, inequalities, graphs, slopes, and operations with polynomials. Prerequisite: Grade of C or better in DMTH 0050 or Math placement test equivalent. Real Numbers and Algebraic Expressions B. Solving Equations and Inequalities C. Graphs of Linear Equations D. Polynomials: Operations E. Geometry F. Problem Solving In each unit you will be given a lecture/demonstration and then be expected to perform the assignments for each unit. Each assignment will be demonstrated and explained so that you can then attempt it. After each unit there will be a knowledge exam and a performance exam. Each exam is based on the information discussed during the lecture, the reading assignments, and the lab assignments given. LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon completion of this course the student will be able to: Perform operations related to real numbers and algebraic expressions. Solve equations and inequalities. Graph linear equations and solve application problems. Solve problems involving graphs, slopes, and applications. Perform operations involving polynomials. Solve problems involving geometric figures.

Discussion Question for each chapter is due before that Chapter Test in Moodle. REQUIRED TEXT AND MATERIALS: DEVELOPMENTAL MATHEMATICS: 7 TH Ed. By Marvin L. Bittinger & Judith A. Beecher; ISBN Math XL: Student Access Kit (comes with a new book or may be purchased separately at the bookstore or on-line at GRADING CRITERIA GRADING SCALE Chapter Tests & Final 50% A % Homework & Lab 25% B 80 89% Quiz 25% C 70 79% D 60 69% F 0 59% Your lowest test grade will be dropped before averaging provided you have not missed more than six (6) hours of lecture and lab excused or unexcused during the semester. DEPARTMENTAL PARTICIPATION POLICY: Prior to this semester, students were recorded as No Shows if they had not attended class by the Official Record Date. No Shows receiving financial aid had this aid removed resulting in the student having to pay for their classes or they were deregistered from school. The recording of No Shows continues, but our policy requires that students attending class must be designated as Shows by the instructor and merely attending class will not accomplish that. The student will receive this designation based upon completion of academic work demonstrating the student s commitment to completing all the required coursework and passing the course. Examples include: 1) purchase of required textbook(s); 2) purchase of Math XL lab access; 3) Registration in the instructors lab section; 4) completion of homework or lab assignment(s); 5) Passing class or lab quizzes or tests. Your instructor will designate the required assignments to be completed by the Official Record date which is Thursday, May 19, 2011 for this course. Students in compliance with this policy will be labeled as Shows and those not complying may lose their financial aid for the course. During the course of the semester, students have three choices: (1) attend and participate, or (2) withdraw (student responsibility), or (3) get an F at the end of the course. If a student has 6 unexcused absences, the student is strongly advised to drop the course, or a grade of F may be issued at the end of the semester. You should be aware that if this is your only TSI-required
4 developmental course, dropping this course will result in your complete withdrawal from the college. Also, the State of Texas has now set a limit of 6 drops that a student may have during their entire college career (all schools combined). System Requirements: MathXL courses support either Windows or Macintosh operating systems and a supported version of Microsoft Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Safari. System requirements may vary depending on your course. To check the requirements for your specific course: Log-in to MathXL Go to the MathXL Browser Check (upper right on title bar). Click the System Requirements link on the first page of the Browser Check (or Installation Wizard) to review what you need. Basic requirements for all MathXL courses: Internet connection: Cable/DSL, T1, or other high-speed for multimedia content; 56k modem (minimum) for tutorials, homework, and testing. Procedures will follow protocols as prescribed by the research guidelines of the Association for Institutional Research. CLASS POLICIES: Calculators may not be used for this course for the exams. 5 Communicating with your instructor (MyMail System): The use of your MyMail TSTC College student account will be the only way to receive official notices from the college. When communicating with instructors and/or employees of the college you are required to use your TSTC MyMail student address. If you choose to forward your to another account, please be advised that all communication from and within the college will use your MyMail student . "TSTC Harlingen faculty, staff, and students are asked to report all threats, perceived or real, immediately to College Police located in the Auxiliary Building. If the threat is imminent, the College Police emergency phone line at or should be called. College Police will then coordinate the proper response in accordance with State and federal laws and TSTC System/College rules and regulations." NOTE: Any changes to this Course Syllabus will be provided in writing to the student and updated on all posted locations (HB 2504, course Moodle sites, building offices, etc). TEST EXIT POLICY: After May 19, 2011, a test-out option is available. If you take the math portion of the Accuplacer test and score 75 or better, show your test score to your instructor. Then you may choose to stop attending class and lab and receive a grade of C. To earn an A or B in this course, you must Continue attending class and lab, and Complete all course work necessary for the higher grade, and Complete the work with an A or B average. After May 19, 2011, Developmental Math students cannot change to a higher level Developmental Math class based on Accuplacer scores. MATH ACCUPLACER TESTING: Student placement in developmental math or college math classes is based on standardized math testing. TSTC uses the Accuplacer test with the following score range assignments: 0 35 DMTH DMTH DMTH MATH MATH 1332* *Check to see if your program accepts this course as the college math course.
