1 Learner Profile for Reading Text Analysis Reading Strategies Task Cards By Susan Powers 2015
2 Combining literacy within the IB PYP Learner Profile helps to reinforce the profile of a learner and helps your students to gain a deeper understanding of what the Learner Profile means about being a whole learner. These fun, differentiated reading task cards are aligned with the IB PYP and the Common Core State Standards for ELA. Included: Inferring skills Questioning Predicting Summarising Cause and Effect Author s Purpose Connection Synthesising Main idea Citing evidence from the text. There are 4 task cards for each trait of the Learner Profile, giving a total of 40 cards. They are designed to be used for text evaluation, analysis and focusing on the skill of reflection and close reading of the text. These task cards can be used in guided reading, small group activities, centres or independent follow up. The cards can be used for written responses and oral responses. 3 From the text, tell about something that you were already knowledgeable about. Use evidence from the text. Explain how you already knew about this. Knowledgeable Write about something you read in the text that you did not know about. Explain what you learned from the text. Knowledgeable Using your knowledge of the book, write a summary of the book. Include examples from the text to support your summary. Explain about the main idea of the text. List 3-5 details from the text to support your answers. Knowledgeable Knowledgeable
4 From the text, list 3-5 questions that you wondered about. Explain why you wondered about these things from the book. Inquirer From the text, list 5-8 questions that you wondered about. Choose 3 of your questions and explain clearly why you wondered about those things. Inquirer Think about the setting of the book. How would you try to improve or change this setting. What did you think about the author s description of the setting? Inquirer Find out where this book was set. Can you draw a map to show where this book was set. Is it fictional or is it a real location? Inquirer
5 From the text, tell about how a character was caring. Would you have been as caring?explain your opinion. Does the author show the characters to be caring? Describe a part of the text where a caring attitude is shown in the plot. Caring Caring Describe how you would make a character in the text more caring. Draw your character as you visualise them and list the caring character traits. Caring Do you feel that the author is a caring person based upon this story? Is there a caring theme? Explain your perspective and use evidence from the text to SUPPORT your opinion. Caring
6 Think about the ending of the book. How do you think the story might continue? Describe what would happen if you write one more last chapter. Thinker Describe where one of the characters had to show the character trait of thinker. What was the reason for the character having to be a thinker? Use evidence from the text to SUPPORT your answer. Thinker From the text, share a part of the plot that caused you to either PREDICT or INFER. Describe your prediction or inference and explain why you thought this way. Thinker What do you think was the climax in this text? Describe the rising action of the plot and explain how it made you feel. Illustrate your visual of this climax moment. Thinker
7 From the text, share a part of the book where the author showed a character to be principled. Explain why you feel this was being principled. Principled Describe how a character was being principled in the book. Principled Describe a part of the text where a character is definitely NOT being principled. Explain how this made you feel. Use 2-3 examples from the text as captions for your illustration to SUPPORT your opinion. Principled
8 How does the author show the characters to be balanced within this book? Use evidence from the book to support your answer. From the text, describe a part of the plot where there was balance.
